The Nine Titans (九つの巨人 Kokonotsu no Kyojin?) are nine Titan powers that have been passed down through the Eldian people for nearly 2,000 years after Ymir Fritz's death, each of them having their own name.[4] They are called the Founding Titan, the Colossal Titan, the Female Titan, the Beast Titan, the Armored Titan, the Attack Titan, the Jaw Titan, the Cart Titan and the War Hammer Titan. History The Nine Titans built the Eldian Empire Around 1,820 years ago, Ymir Fritz obtained the Power of the Titans and became the first Titan, the Founding Titan.[3] Thirteen years later, she died and her soul was then split into the Nine Titans, which were subsequently inherited by nine of her subjects.[4] The Nine Titans soon destroyed the ancient nation of Marley and conquered the entire continent to build the Eldian Empire.[3] The Nine Titans fought each other in the Great Titan War When the 145th King inherited the Founding Titan, he abandoned his duties of balancing the continent's powers, leading to the Great Titan War between the other eight Titans. The King fled and moved many Eldians onto Paradis Island, where he erected three, central Walls.[3] He erased the memories of the Eldians on the island, except for a few minority races which were immune.[5]Marley seized control over seven of the Nine Titans during the war, with only the Founding and Attack Titans escaping their grasp. They distributed the Titans they had among Eldians loyal to them known as warriors.[3] The Reiss family would later lose their Titan to Grisha Jaeger; after Grisha's Attack Titan ate Frieda Reiss's Founding Titan, the two Titans mixed into one. This resulted in the number of Titans being reduced from nine to eight.[5] The number was reduced again years later when Eren Jaeger's Attack Titan consumed Lara Tybur's War Hammer Titan, bringing the number of Titans down to seven.[6] Description Abilities The Founding Titan (始祖の巨人 Shiso no Kyojin?) has the ability to control Titans with its screams.[7] Its screams can affect humans as well, altering their memories, but certain bloodlines are unaffected.[5] Only Eldians containing royal blood are able to use its abilities; however, as shown when Eren screamed and punched Dina Fritz's Titan, a member of non-royal blood is capable of using the Founding Titan's ability via physical contact with a member of the royal family.[8] The Armored Titan (鎧の巨人 Yoroi no Kyojin?) is covered by hardened armor-like skin, except in key areas necessary for movement.[9] It also possesses the ability to harden its arms and feet into sharper claws which could be used to climb structures such as the Walls. The Attack Titan (進撃の巨人 Shingeki no Kyojin?) is said to always move ahead seeking and fighting for freedom. However, it is not known to possess any unique abilities. The Beast Titan (獣の巨人 Kemono no Kyojin?) has a unique bestial appearance, devastating throwing capabilities, and is able to turn humans into Titans and can control them to a rough extent.[10][7] The Cart Titan (車力の巨人 Shariki no Kyojin?) is small with a quadrupedal stance, allowing for cargo and equipment to be carried on its back.[11] It also possesses remarkable speed similar to the Jaw Titan. The Colossal Titan (超大型巨人 Chō ōgata Kyojin?) is enormous and can evaporate its body to release immense amounts of steam. The user is able to control the Titan's transformation power and blast radius.[12][9] The Female Titan (女型の巨人 Megata no Kyojin?) has significant fighting potential and can attract nearby Pure Titans by screaming.[13] The Jaw Titan (顎の巨人 Agito no Kyojin?) is small, fast, and agile; it is also equipped with strong teeth and claws capable of dealing great damage.[14] The War Hammer Titan (戦鎚の巨人 Sentsui no Kyojin?) can materialize various weapons and structures from its own hardened flesh. It can be controlled from afar through a cable of Titan flesh while the user remains hidden within a hardened crystal casing.[15] Physiology Size comparison of Titans to the Walls The heights of the Nine Titans vary greatly: the Cart and Jaw Titans are small at 4 and 5 m, respectively,[16] and the Colossal Titan is enormous at 60 m.[17] The rest hover around 15 m, with the Founding and Female Titan being slightly smaller at 13 and 14 m, respectively;[18][19] the Beast Titan being slightly larger at 17 m;[20] and the Armored and Attack Titan being exactly 15 m.[21][22] The War Hammer Titan is also around 15 m.[15] These heights are definite and it does not matter what the height of the Pure Titan was before inheriting the power of the Titans. For instance, Eren's Pure Titan was originally 4 m,[23] but grew to 15 m after inheriting the Attack Titan, and Armin's Pure Titan form grew from barely being tall enough to look over the buildings in Shiganshina to the immense 60 m size of the Colossal Titan. If an inheritor possesses two or more Titan powers, it appears that one of them would take precedence over the others. Eren Jaeger has both the 13 m Founding Titan and the 15 m Attack Titan, but his Titan form is 15 m. Age does not affect the appearance of the Nine Titans. The Warriors' Titan forms remain constant through their childhood and into early adulthood. The only thing that may change is the hair, for example, Reiner Braun's Armored Titan's hair changed as he aged.[24] Some Intelligent Titans can talk while others cannot. Those who cannot talk have mouths that physically prevent them from proper speech, such as Eren's. The ones that can talk include Ymir, Zeke, Pieck, and Lara. Speech is not defined by the Nine Titans, as Ymir could talk in her Titan form while Porco Galliard could not, despite them both having the Jaw Titan. The fact that even some Abnormal Pure Titans are capable of speech implies that the ability to speak is completely arbitrary. Eren's Pure Titan Inheritors of the Nine Titans do not adopt the appearance of the previous owners' Titans, as both Ymir and Frieda's Titans' appearances are vastly different from Marcel Galliard and Uri Reiss's Titans, respectively.​[25]​[26]​[27]​[28] The current inheritor's Titan form does experience certain changes depending on which of the Nine is received, as Ymir's Titan form gained sharp claws and teeth after acquiring the Jaw Titan and Armin's Titan form became much larger after acquiring the Colossal Titan. Eren's Pure Titan form was much smaller than his current form,[5] and both Ymir's Titan form and Frieda's Titan form were noticeably more emaciated than their Titan bodies after inheriting their Titans.[29][26][30][28] The Female Titan's nape hardens to block an attack Some Titans have been shown to possess the ability to harden. The Armored Titan is particularly skilled at this, being able to naturally harden its entire body. It can also control the areas of hardening, removing armor for additional mobility.[9] The Jaw Titan has naturally hard teeth and claws;[24] this hardening is much stronger than normal hardening.[6] The Female Titan is also capable of hardening. Annie is able to selectively harden regions of her Titan and even create a protective layer around her human body.[13][31] The War Hammer Titan takes it a step further and can make structures and even weapons out of hardening.[15] The Attack Titan does not have this as an innate ability, but it can still be gained through specialized serums, such as the case with Eren. Sometimes called the "Coordinate," the Founding Titan can create and control other Titans via its scream. This scream can also change the memories and even the physical composition of other beings -- a power that was used to wipe the memories of the Eldian who arrived on Paradis Island. Originally held by Ymir Fritz, the Founding Titan was more recently passed from Grisha Yeager to his son, Eren. Currently, as of Season 4 Episode 4, the Founding Titan is in Marley with Eren, waiting to be activated. The Attack Titan The most infamous Titan of all is the Attack Titan. Also the namesake of the anime and manga, the Attack Titan fights solely on the basis of freedom. With its quick reflexes and mighty strength, its physical composition makes it a tough combatant. Similar to the other nine Titans, the Attack Titan can see the memories of both its past and future inheritors, though memories from the latter are often hazy and unclear. It's this ability to see these future memories that motivate the Attack Titan to fight on so that those bad premonitions don't need to happen. The Attack Titan is currently held by Eren Yeager and is with him in Marley as of the latest episode. The Colossal Titan One of the first Titans to be showed in Attack on Titan was the Colossal Titan. Absolutely massive in size, the Colossal Titan controls steam that is emitted by its body. This makes it very difficult to get close to it, providing a good defensive advantage in battle. Additionally, when the holder transforms into this Titan, it can control the blast emitted, potentially using it as an offensive tactic. The biggest feature of this Titan is obviously its sheer size -- it can ven tower over the massive walls of Paradis Island. The current holder of this Titan is Armin Arlert, who inherited it from Bertholdt Hoover. Armin's exact whereabouts have yet to be revealed after the time skip, though it's likely still on Paradis Island. It can easily mimic the attributes of the other Titans, including hardening parts of its skin (like the Armored Titan) and using its scream to draw Pure Titans (like the Founding Titan) to it. It's very fast, nimble and good on the offensive. Annie Leonhart is the current holder of the Female Titan after being chosen to inherit it in Marley. Following her capture by the Survey Corps, Annie used her hardening ability to shroud herself in a crystal-like substance in order to avoid interrogation, rendering her useless. As of right now, the Female Titan is still underground on Paradis Island under the thumb of her captors, encased in her shell. The Armored Titan The Armored Titan is covered head-to-toe in armored plates of skin, protecting itself from physical damage. This makes it a very difficult opponent in battle as the armor is nigh-indestructible. What it has in self-protection it lacks in speed and other Titans, like the Attack Titan, can easily overrun it. The Armored Titan is also able to harden certain parts of its body with a crystal-like substance. It is currently in possession of Reiner Braun, who is in Marley as of the beginning of Season 4. While it is quite large, its behaviors are more similar to that of an animal than of a human. The composition of the Beast Titan changes with the carrier, so its attributes and abilities can change. The present holder is Zeke Yeager, Eren's half-brother. Zeke's abilities include intense amazing throwing power, hardening, and even the ability to "awaken" the Subjects of Ymir as Titans, because of his royal bloodline. Similar to the Founding Titan, Zeke can use his scream to control Pure Titans. Overall, the Beast Titan is a show of brute force. It's currently residing in Marley with Zeke. The Jaw Titan Aptly named, the Jaw Titan power comes primarily through the use of its jaws (and claws), which can tear through almost anything. It is very quick and is extremely lethal, having much better mobility than the other Titans. Its jaws are effective against any material, including human-made structures. As of Season 4 Episode 4, the holder of the Jaw Titan is Porco Galliard, who inherited the Titan from Ymir upon her return to Marley. The Cart Titan The Cart Titan is characterized by a quadrupedal form that allows it to move on all fours. This gives it incredible speed and endurance compared to the other Shifter Titans. Because of its physical shape, the Cart Titan can be used as exactly that: a cart. Weapons and supplies can be piled onto its back and it won't be a burden, making it very useful from a military perspective. It currently resides in Marley and is held by Pieck Finger, a Warrior for the Marleyan army. So far, we know that it is held by someone in the Tybur family but the anime has not revealed who yet. We do know that the War Hammer Titan was used in conjunction with King Fritz and the Tybur family to incite a war, giving most of the Eldians an opportunity to escape to Paradis Island with their King. Since then, little is known about its whereabouts or abilities, but the coming episodes of the final season will finally give some insight into the last of the Nine Shifter Titans.
