Studies were now her priority, although she found it difficult to guide her studies without a tutor, Jess watched replays and interviews of superheroes all morning, making notes of tactics and techniques used by them in the most diverse problems and mainly trying to aggregate herself what each of them thought was more important. The weeks of study went on until Jess was distressed that she had not received a response from any academy, she thought it was better to go check in the post if any orders for her had not been misplaced by mistake.
The girl was not very fond of shopping trips, but the nearest post office was in the big mall in the city, making it inevitable for her to go to him. Watching that silent crowd always left Jess with a tightness in her heart, emotional echoes of when she still had hearing. After two long and dispiriting hours in the mail line she almost let herself be overwhelmed by frustration when she learned that there was nothing for her, her iron fibers were what prevented her from being overwhelmed completely, she put a smile on her face and decided she would go just go home and continue your studies, so when the answer came from some university, it would be ready. She was surprised by a tug at the waist, when she turned around, a smiling girl with colored hair waved at her, her "defender" Rainbow, the girl she had secretly admired for years. By the nod Jess realized that she was being greeted so he responded with the same gesture.
— How nice to find an ex schoolmate right now, I need your help!
With a sign of clenching her fists, nodding, Jess felt honored that someone had asked for her help for something, due to her disability they were always reluctant to ask for something for her, no matter how simple the action was and for someone whose the dream was to help people was something that bothered him.
Guided by Rainbow, the two girls went to a uniform store. Uniform stores were extremely common, due to the fact that superheroes were like pop stars, everyone wanted to have at least one costume. Rainbow placed Jess in front of a dressing room and with extreme agility, grabbed the clothes she wanted and ran inside, a few minutes passed before she left, showing a round blue skirt, long black socks and a white shirt, on his head a round hat with a brim to the front, reminiscent of a sailor was the famous uniform of Brave Heart's. Jess's eyes lit up, it was amazing to see someone she knew wearing those clothes.
— Were you... accepted?
— The results arrived today. I was second in the practical exam and third in the theoretical! But what do you think of the uniform measurements?
— Its amazing!
Normally Jess was not excited about other people, but Rainbow always treated her well even though they were not close, so Jess felt somewhat comfortable around her.
— And you, what are you going to do now that elementary school is over?
The question made Jess a little embarrassed, because unlike Rainbow who would go to the most prestigious academy in the world, she had not received an answer from any university in the country, even those with laughable evaluations.
— I'm... Waiting for the answer... Yet.
— I'm sure they'll be here soon. I would have liked to see you at the tests of Brave Heart! Why didn't you take the test?
— Do you think ... That I would have ... Chances?
— To put up with everything you did without raising your hand and still with a smile on your face, Jess, if you don't have the potential to be a hero, I don't know who has.
That made her completely flushed with embarrassment, she shrugged and kept her head down as if she could lessen her presence to nothing preventing her from seeing her embarrassment and Rainbow realizing that she had been embarrassed, sat next to her, putting her arm around around it, although Jess couldn't hear what she said next, she felt the need to put what she thought into words.
— You are amazing, you just don't realize it.
She knew Jess would love to hear that, but she wanted to say those words at a more opportune time because she truly believed that her future would be filled with greatness.
After buying the uniform the two talked a little more, Rainbow gave her phone number to Jessica, said that she could send a message whenever she wanted and if she needed anything, she shouldn't hesitate to call her. Spending the afternoon with someone was a different experience for Jess because it had been years since she had anyone to consider as a friend and for the first time in a long time she felt genuine pleasure in being with someone.
After getting home, she went straight to the bathroom, after leaving the bathroom and going to the kitchen the door of the house opened, she feasted her eyes when she saw a stranger entering her house, she was a black woman and long dreads in her head, carrying some folders, she was very well dressed, like a secretary in a knee-length skirt and a closed-necked shirt, seeing Jess's reaction, she held up her empty hand, signaling for it to calm down.
— Who are you?
The woman smiled at Jess and showed the brooch pinned to her clothes, the symbol of a lion inside a heart was quickly recognized by her as it was the second time on the day she saw that symbol, it was from the Brave Heart Academy. Although she recognized the brooch this did not end the awkwardness of the moment, seeing that Jess was still suspicious, she went in completely and leaned against the door without taking the smile off her face even once.
— It's okay, I'm Winnie, the advisor of Brave Heart and you must be Jessica Kali.
From the way the girl articulated her mouth with a lot of emphasis on the expressions, it was obvious to Jess that she knew about her condition and probably knew her, even more after saying her name. She asked her to sit on her sofa and after accepting it was also offered tea, taking a few minutes, Jess brought two cups with a teapot on a tray, placing it on the table in the living room and serving the woman.
I am here to ask you some questions because you are one of the nominees for the First Class Super Heroic Habitator Course at Brave Heart.
While the woman said this, Jess took a sip of her tea and almost choked on hearing such madness.
— What?!
She believed that she had misinterpreted that woman's lines.
— Candidates usually know that they were indicated. Honestly, you are the first person who doesn't know you were nominated.
— I... Recommended? How? By whom?
— For some reason your appointment was made in secrecy, I figured it was to preserve your image, avoiding associations, but if you also don't know, I believe that only the director will be able to answer you.
She put the cup on the tray again, it didn't make any sense, it was completely crazy, what was going on?
Seeing Jess's mental confusion, the woman then continued to speak.
— I'm just here to confirm some data.
After a not too long conversation confirming or correcting certain information, the woman said that the interview had ended up with just one last question.
— Now I would like you to answer me, why do you want to be a superhero?
Shyness took over her, she didn't want the interviewer to think that she would say just to look like a good person in her eyes and be accepted.
— I think... Super heroes can... Help people.
— You don't have to be a super hero to help people.
— But I need to learn... To be strong... To help people.
The woman watched Jess for a moment then signed a paper and handed it to him. She looked at the logo in the background, her heart filled with heat at that moment, it was a letter of congratulation for having passed the rigorous admission criteria of the Brave Heart Academy with the final signature of the interviewer, in this case, Advisor Winnie. She felt Winnie's hand on her arm calling her attention because she had something more to say.
— Welcome to Brave Heart Academy, future super heroine Jessica. Classes start next week, I hope you are ready.
By some kind of reflex Jess hugged that woman tightly and when she walked away she repeatedly apologized for her "inappropriate behavior", feeling very embarrassed but the woman just laughed at the situation and said there were no problems. She accompanied the woman to the door and said goodbye to her, when she closed the door she leaned against it and collapsed on the floor trying to associate what had just happened. She had been accepted to Brave Heart Academy when all the other universities in the country had rejected her it was too surreal to be associated with but more than confused she was happy.
