E-5 Miserable and Helpless

Stephanie Irving? I don't know much Actually. But as I heard, she came third. And it's for the first time. That poor girl must be feeling low.

- Mum, you know what, I took a sneak peek at her notes one day. Unbelievably, she makes a lot of silly mistakes. With that huge amount of spelling mistakes, she can't possibly stand first! I have a doubt...maybe she..

- Shhh, even the walls have ears. We'll talk about it later. Don't you know who they are? The Irvings! They are one of the biggest shareholders in Jucci! If one of their followers hear you.... nevermind, how you are feeling now?

- Quite better. I can walk.

- Good. We are going home now.

Mum sent the application for leave to the head clerk. There were still classes going on, but I wasn't attending. after I left school, I saw the sky, what was supposed to be yellowish with a bloody coloured sun, was filled with black clouds. I could hear they were rumbling, as if they were grumbling.

- Oh no, looks like it's gonna rain soon! Hurry up dear! We gotta make it to bus stop before they start pouring!

Sheding my head with my school bag, we ran as fast we could, but before we reached there, it started raining cats and dogs.

- Oh God, why?

Mum was utterly disappointed.

After reaching the bus stop, we noticed we were drenched in rain water. Mum was shaking in cold, and I already started sneezing.

- Jeez, now it looks like I caught a cold....ACHCHHUUU!

- Hang on dear, once we reach home, I will make you some hot chicken soup. You will be okay.

" Chicken" soup? That meant mum was skipping one more meal. That's the least thing I wanted to happen.

- Nahh, I am okay mum, just.... ACHCHHUU!

- Zip it! You can't convince my heart, you are totally not okay and even your teacher said it!

I couldn't find anymore excuses. I was helpless. There's no way I can stop mum from fasting.

Normally, we would just walk home, but now as my health was bad, mum and I went home by bus. Pretty sure that costed as much as we spend on lunch. I know that sounds lame, and one even question if whatever we were eating was ' edible ', but trust me, there's no way we are enjoying lavish lifestyle now. Sometimes, we even gotta fast to eat something the next day. But mum never let me realise the pain of hunger. No matter what it costed, she never let me do that, at least in her conciousness. Without her knowing, I kept skipping meals that caused the disaster today.

When we opened the door, mum tried to switch on the lights, but it didn't work. Anxiously, she called the electrical office, and hanged on sighing.

- Bad news darling. As we couldn't pay the bill, they cut off the electrical connection. We have to light the lamps for your study in evening.

So God is really trying to wipe out our existence, huh?

Nevermind, I can walk it alone. I can do it. At least mum don't have to pay my school fees. And.....OH NO.

I didn't go to work today.

I was loosing my mind. No no, they won't just fire me because I was absent one day, right? They can't be that cruel...no no, they can't be, but....maybe...

I didn't have time to waste.

- Mum I suddenly remembered, I have some books to return to the library, and today is the deadline! I'm sorry mum, I have to go!

- But wait a minute-

Without letting her finish her sentence, I dashed off to the store. I felt like my body was burning up, probably because I got a fever because of the rain. I messed it up, I am such a loser, how am I gonna earn like this....

Speaking of earning, I was getting fifty dollars per month working in that store. The shopkeeper was an old man who didn't have a family. After working there for months, he started to see me as his granddaughter. But the store was small, and he was poor and sick as well, so he couldn't pay me much. But that's enough to buy biscuits and flour for a month, and that means good meal.

As I didn't told mum about my job, whenever mum gave me money to buy foods, I took my earnings also and bought more. At first, mum was suspicious, as she was sure we couldn't buy all of them with that little money, I told her that the seller came to know our condition and gave me those. Thus I was able to make mum trust in me and the non existing good humans and God. If that deaf and blind God helps mum stay calm, then let it be him to be our savior.

Thinking all those weird thoughts, I stepped on the store yard.... I saw something unbelievable.....I helplessly sat on the dusty road ... unable to process the incident happening before my eyes.....
