I was running, away from God knows what, like my life depended on it. I made my way into the woods and ran past the gigantic trees. The night was cold and harsh, I could feel it on my bare skin like a thousand stabs. My heart rate increased as the steps of whatever or whoever got closer every second.
Suddenly I heard howls and for a moment I thought I was hallucinating but the sounds came again clearer and louder. This was not about who was following me but what— something wasn't right somewhere wolves never existed, besides they could only show up during a full moon. At that point in time I didn't want to look up it wasn't so important, just one thing was on my mind I needed a hide-out.
Nothing turned out the way I wanted, there was no fuckin' hide-out and no stop to this nightmare. I was still running but this time I couldn't feel my legs anymore and later on couldn't feel body when I tripped on a huge tree root protruding from the ground face down. The howling sound and steps were already near. I lifted up my bruised face from the ground to look at what was standing ten centimeters ahead of me.
My eyes widened at the sight of large furry legs with claws attached to it. My eye balls rolled from buttom to top as they finally captured the full structure of a craving black wolf. I managed to sit up despite the terrible pains I felt. I slowly crawled backward at every step the fury creature made, for a moment it stopped to let out a loud howl with its face to the sky that's when I noticed the full moon its diverging shy beams were suspending due to the spread out leafy branches of the trees. Seconds later, I heard hundreds of other howls from different angles of the woods, this wolf was communicating with others the earlier I got rid of it the better for me but how could I do this? Didn't remember having any weapon on me.
Think. Think. Think.
My eyes darted around me, looking for any usable object, fortunately they fell on a broken branch, without any second thought I reached for it and held it out to the creature with both hands in defense. I cursed under my breathe at the sight of close to a thousand black, craving, ferocious werewolves. Just for how long had I lost focus?? My hands began to tremble as they drew nearer.
“Don't move.” I managed to say and finally realized how stupid I sounded, was I actually expecting them to obey me? They were senseless creatures for heaven sake. I swiped at the creature with the branch in my hand but it showed no sign of backing off, made a second swipe try but got the branch flying off my hands.
I tried crawling backward again just to feel my back hit against a tree trunk, that was it....the end. I closed my eyes in other not to see them bounce on me. For a moment I didn't feel anything, my watery eyes opened and there was nothing in sight. Where were the mighty wolves? Perhaps they finally got feelings and decided to let me go or something must have scared them. Whatever it was that made them run away saved me and I owe it.
I wiped the warm tear which had already made its way out of my eye on to my cheek and struggled on my feet, glad all those scary creatures were out of my sight— well almost all one was left, wasn't like others, didn't look ferocious neither did it look craving it actually had nothing in common with the others its fur was brown. Why was this one so different? Why didn't it run away with others? Perhaps whatever scared the others didn't scare it?
It came closer, I tried to walk back but I hit the trunk that was when I realized I hadn't made a step away from it since the departure of the other creatures. I slid on to the ground in surrender, eyes firmly shut. Go on, just devour me already. I thought. The creature came closer than it already was and immediately i felt a shean of sweat roll down my face.
Crack!!!
The sound of a broken branch woke me up.Thank goodness. I got out of bed and slightly shifted my curtain to see nothing but the old mapple tree opposite my window. It's probably just the wind acting on an old branch.
“ What a nightmare! ” I muttered.
The clock read three minutes to three am in the morning, didn't feel like going back to bed lest I have a second chapter of the nightmare. I rushed to the bathroom and flushed some water onto my face which met with its reflection in the mirror seconds later.
I pictured the dream on my mirror focusing on the last wolf, couldn't stop wondering why it was totally different from the others; In colour, appearance and even its eyes. There was something familiar about it which reminded of someone. But what? Oh! It's eyes— they were a hue of brown, that familiar brown- like those of— Scott.
I chuckled at the thought. How related was a dream to a guy I barely knew? Its not like he was the only guy with those eyes. I rolled my eyes and made my way to the room.
I laughed at the thought of Jess' face when I tell her I had a ten minutes discussion with Scott at a store when a strange noise took me off guard from outside, without hesitation I jumped out of bed and shifted the curtain just in time to glimpse at someone's silhouette bending towards an alley. For a moment fear paralyzed me. Who was still out there at three am? What was this person looking for? Something wrong somewhere,I couldn't stop but think someone was spying on me, why and who?
