The tears fell non-stop as he replayed the situation over and over again in his head. He would set all of this right again if it was the last thing he did. He wasn’t about to let his family ruin the one thing that brought him joy.
*****
Jungkook pounds on your door desperately but all you can hear is your sobs. You never thought your heart could hurt this much. As you lay in bed, furiously wiping away the never-ending tears, you can’t help but think that you had brought this upon yourself because in what universe would a guy like Jungkook ever like you for… you. Stupid, stupid me, you thought to yourself as Buster curled up next to you in bed.
You felt like you had just fallen asleep when you heard the incessant sound of your ringtone disrupting your sleep.
“Hey, little sis,” The voice on the other end says in a calm tone.
You sit up immediately, turning the volume up on your phone.
“Jimin? Is that you? W-What’s happening… I mean I heard but… tell me you didn’t, please.”
“I’m being held at the police station for now and I’m using one of my phone calls on you,” He answers. “Y/N, I didn’t do it willingly… I hope you’ll believe me,” He continues and you swear you could feel the sadness seeping through his voice and into your phone’s speakers.
You remain quiet and Jimin could feel the doubt radiating through the phone.
“I just… I need your help, please? Come down to the main police station in town in about 2 hours. An Officer Seokjin should be on duty and he’d probably let you see me if you ask him nicely,” He says. “I understand how all of this looks Y/N and it’s ok to say no but—“
“I’ll be there Jimin but please all I want is the truth,” You plead.
“Of course, I just… thank you so much,” He says and you can almost picture Jimin smiling with relief.
You let out a short hum and bid him farewell.
Your eyes were swollen and your soul felt absolutely crushed. You had wanted to go for a drive, a long drive with nowhere in mind just to clear your mind but Jimin, you’d do anything for him. He was the closest thing you had to an actual brother, the closest thing to family to you and you knew even if he was in the wrong, even if he had betrayed your family you would still go down to the station to see him.
You cleaned up and set out food and water for Buster. He looked up at you with the saddest eyes and you felt a pang of guilt run throughout your body.
“I know I wasn’t around all day yesterday and I probably won’t be around today too but I love you, you know that right?” You say as you bend down to pet him.
Buster nudges you and lets out a whine.
“I’m all yours after today, I promise. We’ll go to the park, the beach, wherever you want to. Just like old times, just you & me. Sounds good?”
All it took was the word ‘park’ to make Buster light up like the bulbs on a Christmas tree. He wagged his tail and barked excitedly.
You hurriedly shush Buster and glance out the window in hopes that Jungkook hadn’t woken up due to the noise. You grab your keys and you bid Buster goodbye before shutting your front door.
Jungkook awakens to the sound of an engine starting and he’s out of his bed within seconds. He looks out the window to see your pick-up truck pulling out of the driveway. He needed to see you, to talk to you, to let you know that he had been framed.
He runs down the stairs hurtling towards the front door. He sees your car speeding down the small road and he knows he’ll be able to catch up with you if he drove fast enough except he realizes his car is nowhere to be seen. He curses himself for getting drunk the night before last. If he hadn’t he would’ve been able to drive home, if he hadn’t he wouldn’t even find himself in this situation because the diadem code would’ve stayed unknown to the rest of the Jeon family. If he hadn’t, he would’ve probably still be in bed watching you nuzzle up to him like you did every time the both of you slept on the same bed.
Down and defeated he retreats towards his house again. He stood there thinking of places you would possibly go to. He’d go to all of them and search however long he had to. He hears his phone ringing and he runs towards his room to retrieve it. He knew it’d be highly unlikely that it would be you who was calling but he still hoped that it would be.
“Hello?” Jungkook asks in between pants.
“Son, you called?”
“Oh,” Jungkook says disappointedly when he realizes it isn’t your voice but then pure anger takes over.
“I can’t believe you did that to me. You even got step-mum to play her part so well,” He says.
“You made me feel so guilty for missing all those family brunches… saying that you missed me but you didn’t miss me at all. You just needed to know the code,” He continues, voice dripping with anger.
“Well, I didn’t force you to tell me the code.”
“You know very well that if I was sober I would’ve probably figured out something fishy was happening,” Jungkook counters.
“So what? We didn’t get what we wanted anyway which I’m sure your little miss had already told you about. So what’s with all this attitude?” His father answers harshly.
“Bullshit. Of course you got what you wanted. You made her think I was dating her for information. I know you don’t like that I’m dating your rival’s daughter, but did you have to take it this far?”
“Language!” His father warns. “Look I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about but if the two of you have broken up then good riddance.”
“Then… what does diadem have to do with all this? Why did you get Y/N involved?”
“It was the easiest way to get the code that would give us access to the plans but there was an extra question and useless Jimin got it wrong so there went our chance.”
“Right…” Jungkook says as he tries to wrap his head around all this new information. “Then, what about the voice clip that you sent to Y/N, why did you do that?”
One of Mr. Jeon’s staff steps in to Mr. Jeon’s office to notify him of a meeting that he has to attend and Mr. Jeon nods in understanding.
“Look I don’t know what you’re on about and I wish I could say I care but I have more important things to attend to than some stupid lovers spat,” His father says before ending the call abruptly.
Now Jungkook felt even more confused. He was trying to make sense of it all in his head but he simply couldn’t decipher what in the **** was actually going on. What was his father trying to access and again what did this all have to do with Y/N? Why had someone sent her an edited version of their family conversation. If it wasn’t his father, then was it his brother? Also, who is Jimin? All these question swimming around in his mind made his head ache. He absentmindedly scrolls through his social media out of habit and a short post catches his attention.
Y/L/N Logistics, faces an internal security issue as the trusted secretary of the family had attempted to break into some high level security files a fortnight ago. He had since been arrested but the question on everybody’s mind is what information was he trying to access?
Attached was video footage of Jimin in handcuffs being led to the police car and Jungkook’s eyes flicker with recognition.
Park Jimin? The Park Jimin that Y/N loves as a brother? Was this the same Jimin his father was referring to?
From the stories that you had told him about Jimin, Jungkook would’ve never guessed that Jimin would be capable of such betrayal. Everything seemed so off. His father had given him an answer that only confused him more and his brother still isn’t picking up the phone. He just needed someone to explain the whole situation to him before he went crazy.
If no one he knew would give him answers, then he would seek them on his own and right now the only person that could probably make sense of all of this was sitting in a jail cell downtown. He glances at his watch and smiles. His favourite officer just happened to be on duty. With a mission in mind, he gets dressed and patiently waits for his cab to arrive.
The sound of a car pulling up has Jungkook rushing to grab his belongings. No way the cab would get here this quick. Maybe, maybe it was you and he finds himself rushing out of his front door but as he looks out of the doorway, he realizes that isn’t your car. A figure steps out of the car and that definitely isn’t you. It was Jung fuckin Hoseok. Jungkook felt his blood boil at the sight of Hoseok. He remembers the way you looked utterly broken as you reiterated what Hoseok had said to you when the he had broken up with you. Jungkook’s hand twitched with an undeniable urge to punch him. He storms out of his house to confront the man that had spewed those evil thoughts at you.
“What are you doing here?”
Hoseok turns around shocked but recovers soon enough to answer, “I’m just here to see an old friend… problem?”
“Well, she isn’t here and she definitely isn’t your friend. So, you should get going then.”
“I could say the same to you,” Hoseok says as he snickers to himself.
“What the hell is that supposed to mean?”
Hoseok furrows his brows. No way you stayed with him even after hearing that voice clip right? He looks at the man standing before him with a menacing look on his face but as he notices Jungkook’s swollen eyes, he couldn’t help but smile to himself.
“Nothing…” Hoseok drawls. “Had a rough night?” He asks as he gestures towards Jungkook’s eyes.
“That’s none of your business,” Jungkook snarls. “Anyway, like I said I think you should get going.”
“Why? I remember you being a lot friendlier the first time I met you.”
“Yeah? That was before I found out you were an asshole to Y/N so, please leave.”
“Well as far as I know, I’m not on your property so you don’t get to tell me what to do.” Hoseok says as he took a step closer towards Jungkook.
“Fair enough but Y/N and I are together and I’d like to keep guys like you as far away from her as possible.”
“Together?” Hoseok questions with a quirked eyebrow.
“Well did I fucking stutter?”
“Alright, calm down you delusional asshole,” Hoseok says with hands held up in surrender. Not even together anymore he whispers to himself.
“Who said we aren’t?”
Hoseok’s eyes widen. Fuck. He licks his lips nervously and his eyes dart around.
“You came running out of your house the moment you saw my car,” Hoseok stammers. “And your eyes are so swollen… probably from crying yourself to sleep,” Hoseok says ending the sentence with a confident smirk, completely satisfied with the way he had recovered.
But Jungkook doesn’t buy it. He squints his eyes, scrutinizing Hoseok’s odd behavior. A glint on the lapel of Hoseok’s suit catches his attention and Jungkook steps closer towards him to get a better look. It can’t be. Jungkook would recognize the small metal badge pinned to his lapel anywhere. Jeon Logistics.
“You work for my father…” Jungkook whispers. Hoseok’s hand automatically flies up to cover the badge on his lapel. “The voice clip… it was you, wasn’t it?” Jungkook says as he takes another step closer to Hoseok. “You son of a bitch,” Jungkook growls as he grabs Hoseok by the collar.
Hoseok lets out a low laugh. “Voice clip? That’s a nice story you’ve got there… I’d like to see you prove it,” He says with a smirk.
The sound of a car pulling up startles the both of them and Jungkook immediately releases Hoseok. In some way, Jungkook is relieved that the cab had shown up at the time that it did or he might’ve done something he regretted. Jungkook wasn’t the type to solve problems with violence but when it came to you, all his rationality just flew out the window.
“You had your chance years ago and you blew it so you stay away from her you hear me?” Jungkook warns as he walks over to his cab. He gets in the cab and orders the driver to drop him off at the police station downtown. He sits in the backseat with his trembling hands clasped together as he tried to calm himself down. He hoped to God that Jimin had the answers because with the way his day was going, he wouldn’t be surprised if he didn’t.
You step into the bustling police station with a box full of doughnuts in hand. Cops like doughnuts right? You scanned the front desk for an Officer Seokjin and your eyes landed on his name tag and then up at his face. You gulped nervously and took a step closer towards him.
“Yes, can I help you with anything Miss?”
“Y-yeah. I’m here to see a friend… who’s in lock-up…” You say quietly. The officer looks up at you with a stern look. “Please?” You add. You hoped this is what Jimin meant by asking nicely.
“Are you family or a lawyer?”
You contemplated lying for a second but his stare convinced you not to.
You looked down at your feet then back at him.
“I’m neither but he’s almost like family to me,” Desperation seeping into your voice. “He’s the closest thing I’ve got to an actual family… That counts, right?” You almost whisper and Seokjin feels his heart almost break a little at that.
“I’m sorry miss, almost family doesn’t really count bu—“
You set the box of donuts on the counter and reach over to grab his hands.
“Please, sir,” You beg. “I need to see him… it’s really important,” You continue and you release his hands to push the box of donuts towards him.
“A-are you trying to bribe me with food?”
“Depends… is it working?”
“It’s a crime.”
Your eyes widen and then you clear your throat.
“Then no, I am not. I am simply offering doughnuts to the wonderful men & women at this station who work hard to keep our city safe,” You say exaggeratedly and you almost want to run away and hide now.
“So I get to keep these even if I say no to you?”
You frown a little but quickly slap on a smile to hide your disappointment. “O-of course.”
“You know miss, if you had originally let me finish my sentence just now… You would be talking to your friend already.”
Your eyes lit up. “You mean I can…? Are you sure?”
Seokjin stood up and looked at you with a cocked eyebrow. “Well would you like me to change my mind?”
“N-no of course not, sir.”
“Alright then. What’s his name?”
“Park Jimin”
“And yours?”
“Y/LN, Y/N”
You could see figurative question marks floating around his head the moment you mentioned your last name.
Although he was a little confused, Seokjin picked up the phone and mumbled a few commands before leading you to one of the rooms at the back of the station.
He leads you inside the room with a donut in hand and tells you that Jimin would be arriving soon. You bow profusely to show your thanks and he only gives you a light smile while lifting the doughnut up.
You sit down on the cold metal chair and tap your feet together. You took a deep breath and practiced your poker face. You barely had enough time to contemplate your thoughts when a rather haphazard looking Jimin stumbles into the room. His eyes were bloodshot and his hair was all messy. If this was what one night in lock-up could do to Jimin, you shivered at what actual prison would do to him. Before walking in, you had promised yourself that you wouldn’t show a hint of emotion until he told you the whole truth but looking at him now, you couldn’t help but feel your heart sink slightly.
Jimin rubbed at his raw wrists before taking a seat across from you. Catching sight of his disheveled look in the double mirror, he quickly runs his hand through his hair and straightens out his clothes. He waits for you to say something, anything but you just stare at him with the saddest looking eyes he had ever seen.
He gives you a light smile before placing his hand above yours. “Y/N, I know what you’re thinking but I’m fine, really.”
You frown even more and you use your free hand to lightly squeeze his. He was obviously trying his hardest to keep himself together. Jimin always put up a façade when he was on the edge of breaking down but you could always tell and this was surely one of those times. You didn’t like that he felt the need to hide his true emotions from you.
“So… the truth?” You ask.
“Right… where do I even start?”
“Well from the beginning preferably.”
Jimin lets out a light laugh before letting out a deep breath. He starts with his insider trading incident and then receiving the blackmail threat from the Jeons. He then details everything he did regarding the diadem code for the past few months and you could see the frown etched on his face growing deeper. Guilt weighing heavily on each and every sentence and all you wanted to do was take it all away. The pain, the guilt, the situation that he was in.
“Y/N, I know it’s a lot to take in and I know you would probably never forgive me or trust me again but honestly I—“
“Jimin, I believe you. I understand why you did it.”
He couldn’t stop the lone tear that spilled out the corner of his eye. You reach over the wipe it away and he couldn’t help the numerous tears that came spilling down his cheeks after.
“Jimin,” you sigh. “Why didn’t you just tell my brother about the blackmail incident? You know he would’ve understood.”
“I… I just got scared and I know I should have… but I just… he trusts me and—“
Watching Jimin struggle with his words was heartbreaking and you instantly regret asking the question so, you change the topic instead.
“So, what now? How do we fix this? How can I help?”
“I.. I have proof of the blackmail. I have proof that the Jeons are behind this.” He says. “I just need you to download the voice clips off the computer in my home and pass it along to my lawyer.”
You nod eagerly at the detailed instructions Jimin gives you regarding the audio clips.
“I’m sorry that I dragged you into this mess but I have no one else… you know I don’t want my family involved in all of this because God knows what the Jeons would do to them.”
“Jimin, you know that I’d want to do this for you no matter what.”
“I know,” He replies with a light smile. “You and Jungkook,” He sighs. “It’s a shame that the two people who want absolutely nothing to do with the company got caught in the middle of all of this.”
“Ah I see he fooled you too,” You reply with a sad smile. “I defended that asshole when my family said all those things about him but they were right.”
Jimin only gives you a confused look and you let out a long sigh.
“He only pretended to like me for the code.”
Jimin lets out a hearty laugh. “Where did you hear that sweetheart? I can guarantee that isn’t the case.”
“What do you mean? I heard it for myself… Here,” You say as you pull your phone out of your pocket to play the audio file for Jimin and his eyebrows simply furrow upon hearing the whole clip.
“That’s not right… That’s—“
“Time’s up, you two,” A rather burly officer announces as he opens the door with handcuffs in hand.
You panic, you didn’t want Jimin to go back into the tiny jail cell. What if his plan doesn’t work out? What if you had to just watch him rot away in a jail cell for years?
“No, please! 5 more minutes, wait!” You plead with the officer. You turn back to Jimin and you can’t help the speed of which the words come tumbling out of your mouth. “2 copies of that audio file right? One for your lawyer and one for safekeeping? And your password it’s—“
The officer ignores you, roughly pulling Jimin out of his chair and placing the handcuffs on his hand. “Y/N, calm down, you’ve got this,” Jimin assures with a light smile. “Thank you so much for doing this for me.”
“Alright, I said time’s up! Let’s get moving,” Yells the officer.
Jimin tries his best to resist the officer but the officer merely drags him out of the room and you hear his shoes scuff across the surface of the cement floor.
“Y/N, about Jungkook just check the audio file that’s dated the day before yesterday and timestamped around dinner time and you’ll hea—“ He exclaims as he’s being pushed out of the room and you hear the door being slam shut, cutting his sentence short.
You leave the police station, stopping once more at the front desk to thank Officer Seokjin for his kindness and he waves you goodbye with another doughnut in hand. You get in your car and head straight to Jimin’s house. At this point, you had no time to worry about your current situation or to overthink the last portion of your conversation with Jimin. Your priority was getting Jimin out of jail and everything else was secondary.
Jungkook arrives at the police station in less than an hour after offering to pay the cabbie double if he drove above the speed limit. He jogs up to the front desk and smiles when he catches Seokjin with a doughnut in his mouth.
“Yes, can I help you with anything Si—“ Seokjin stops mid-sentence as he lifts his head to see the young man before him. “Ah, you little brat! It’s been a while hasn’t it?” Seokjin says as he reaches over the counter to pinch his cheek.
“Ah, stop that! I’m not a kid anymore,” Jungkook exclaims.
“To what do I owe this honour? Trying to run away from home again?” Seokjin asks mischievously and Jungkook only scowls in response.
When Jungkook was 14, he had a habit of attempting to run away. The first few times he tried it, his father had tracked him down within a few hours but after a while he simply got tired. Mr. Jeon knew that his son would find his way home by the end of the day so he simply let him be.
Jungkook spent his days wondering the streets, discovering abandoned train stations and secret trails within the local park. He spent his nights maneuvering dark alleyways and soaking in the vibrant nightlife of the city. This was his way of coping with grief, his way of drowning out the loud thoughts in his head. He didn’t want to admit it but a part of him did it just so he could get his father’s attention. Ever since his mother’s death Jungkook felt like a ghost living in the Jeon residence. It was almost as if it didn’t matter if he was there or not so he decided to test out that theory but tonight, the theory proved right when 14-year old Jungkook realizes that his father isn’t looking for him.
Jungkook settles down on a park bench and fold his jacket underneath his head. He looks up to the night sky and he had never felt more alone then at this moment. He closes his eyes to rid himself of the overwhelming sadness that seems to be slowly taking over.
He feels a light prod on his shoulder and swats the space around it thinking it was some drunkard that had come to bother him. Then the same person shakes him awake and Jungkook sits up, evidently furious. Then he shrinks away as he notices the man in the uniform.
“Hey, I’m sorry but you’re not allowed to sleep here overnight.”
Jungkook stands up immediately, bowing respectfully at him and then murmuring a string of apologies.
“Hey, kid wait!”
Jungkook stops in his tracks, and looks up in the officer in fear.
“Don’t worry you’re not in trouble,” The officer says as he puts his hand on Jungkook’s shoulder. “What’s your name?”
“Jungkook,” He whispers.
“I’m Seokjin but you can call me Jin. It’s nice to meet you, Jungkook,” Seokjin says as he offers Jungkook a handshake which he timidly accepts.
“Do you have a home?” He asks and Jungkook nods yes.
“Alright, how about I send you home then?”
Jungkook hesitates at first and then reluctantly agrees.
Jin managed to coax the boy into having a conversation during the ride home and despite the age difference, he had thoroughly enjoyed chatting with him. In fact, Jin felt a little sad when Jungkook had said that his car was right around the corner. Jin pulls up in front of the Jeon residence and he couldn’t help but marvel at the size of the house. He smiles at Jungkook encouraging him to leave the car but the boy fidgets in the seat, unwilling to leave.
“Don’t you want to go in?” Jin asks.
“Not really…” Jungkook answers while glancing down at his feet.
“I-is everything okay at home? Is it a safe space?” Jin asks.
Jungkook’s eyes widen at the implication of Jin’s sentence.
“On no, no it’s nothing like that. Yes my home is fine. It’s just… I feel like I don’t exist in that house. Like you know nobody cares?” Jungkook sighs. “You must think I’m just a spoiled brat huh?” Jungkook asks.
Rationally most people would agree with Jungkook but something about the way the younger man carried himself made Jin feel like there was a lot more to the boy then he could see at this moment.
“No, I don’t,” Jin answers calmly. “Look, I get it… sometimes some families aren’t the best but you know if you’re ever looking for someone to hang out with… you can always find me at the police station downtown.”
“You’re only saying that because you want me to get out of your car.”
“You’re a smart one aren’t you?” Jin answers with a laugh. “But, no. I actually mean it.”
“I’ll actually take you up on that offer so you better be telling the truth.”
“Ah, where did shy Jungkook go? Your true colours are showing you brat!” Jin teases. “You owe me lunch for this ride home so you better show up at the station someday.”
Jungkook exits the car and waves him goodbye. Meeting Jin was just what he needed today. Perhaps the man was just being kind but the warmth and love that radiated from him made Jungkook feel that perhaps he had finally met someone who cared about him even if it was just a little.
Jungkook eventually bought Jin lunch one day and throughout the years, they had gone out to have lunch many times. Jin brought him along for his patrol rides occasionally. He would make him wait a certain distance from the station and then pick him up when no one was in sight. He knew he could very well lose his job if he was ever caught but Jungkook made his mundane job so much fun. Jin would tell him he was only doing this so he could ensure that he was staying out of trouble but he knew that he was doing this because he enjoyed Jungkook’s company.
Jin was a brotherly figure to Jungkook and he was so much more comfortable telling him his troubles rather than talking to Junghyun. As he grew older, the visits became less frequent but they remained close friends. Jin no longer had patrol rides to bring him along with and Jungkook was busy attending meetings all over the place but they both knew that they had a brotherly tie that could never diminish.
“That was so long ago… will you ever let it go?” Jungkook whines.
“I’m just teasing,” Jin says as he ruffles the younger’s hair.
“Listen, I uhh— I need a favour…” Jungkook asks nervously.
Jin looks at him with eyebrows raised and encourages him to go on.
“I need to see a friend in lock-up… A Park Jimin?”
“You too? He just had a visitor.”
“H-he did? Was it a woman? Do you remember what she looked like? Her name?” Jungkook asks. He can’t believe he didn’t think about the possibility of you coming to visit Jimin.
“Yeah, um Y/N? Y/LN, Y/N. Which is weird because her family accused him of—“
Of course it was you.
“I really need to see Jimin now. Please!” Jungkook begs and Jin hears the urgency in his voice.
“Alright, calm down geez,” Jin says as he picks up the handset to set up the visit.
Jimin settles back down in the lock-up cell and grimaces when he once again finds himself surrounded by some of the scariest looking men he had ever seen. He made himself at home in the far corner of the cell, praying hard that none of them would come and bother him. He knew that prison was going to be worse but he’d rather face his reality then versus trying to think about it now.
A fight ensues between two men on the other side of the cell and Jimin feels like all the air has escaped his lungs. They land punch after punch on each other and Jimin wants to scream for help but he knows that would only paint a massive target on his back.
“Hey, break it up!” An officer shouts as he hits his baton on the metal bars of the cell. “Do you two want an early transfer to jail?” He asks sternly while unlocking the jail cell.
“You,” The officer says turning to face Jimin and Jimin freezes, pure horror settling onto his features. “Come out. You’ve got a visitor.”
Jimin scrambles to his feet and almost runs out of the cell. He breathes out a sigh of relief when the officer slaps on the handcuffs again. He’d never thought he’d be glad to feel the cold metal on his wrist again.
