Previously…

You couldn’t believe your luck. It was surreal seeing him in front of you. Just my luck right? You’re barely ever in the city and if you were and you’re never usually in this part of the city. Of all people to meet, it just had to be Hoseok.

*****

Jimin hated being in the office after hours and he especially hated the guilt that hung over his head every time he was in the security room trying to break the code for Mr. Jeon.

Jimin entered the words on the piece of paper that Taehyung had given him.

The screen goes blank and Jimin starts sweating.

SUCCESS!

The screen turns black and slowly words began to appear.

“Sir, there are dashes for the corresponding answers. I guess this will make it easier but honestly, none of this makes sense to me.”

“Just send me the details,” Mr Jeon says. “You’ve done well so far, Jimin,” He continues and then he ends the call abruptly.

Jimin winces at the comment. He hated that he was in this position. This company and your family meant the world to him. The fact that he could put food on the table for his family was all because of this job at Y/L/N Logistics and he wished he could take back that mistake he made all those years ago. If only he pushed away his pride and asked for a loan from your family, he wouldn’t be in this position. Every time Mr. Jeon hung up on him, he would let out a heavy sigh. He wonders what you would think of him if you ever found out that he played a major part in the imminent fall of your family’s company.

You sat on the bench swinging your legs above the ground as you watched Buster roll around on the grass. Jungkook was sat inches away from you, observing your every move. You didn’t really know what to say to him. You felt bad for putting him on the spot with Hoseok and all of that and honestly you don’t know why you did that anyway. So what you were single? It shouldn’t have mattered but you got yourself into this mess anyway.

“So, I think I went above and beyond the call of duty back there at that coffee shop so… I deserve an explanation,” Jungkook suddenly says, bringing you back to reality and out of your thoughts.

You bite your lower lip nervously. He really did deserve one despite the no questions asked favour because with each question Hoseok threw at Jungkook, he was able to answer each one effortlessly. He made it all so believable. He held you close and pecked your cheek in between answers and you just looked up at him, as if you were in awe.

“How many months have the two of you been together?” Hoseok asks while glancing at Jungkook’s hand that now rests on your waist.

You swallow nervously, trying to think of a reasonable number but Jungkook answers almost instantaneously.

“Oh, it’s been about maybe 3 months now? Right, babe?” Jungkook looks at you and you only nod in agreement. “It doesn’t really matter though, I just wished I could’ve gotten closer to her much sooner,” He says as he lightly squeezed your side and you can only smile in response. What a fuckin’ cheeseball.

Hoseok continued asking questions and Jungkook answered all of them and you chimed in occasionally so it wouldn’t look suspicious. Hoseok’s girlfriend began to look uncomfortable as the conversation continued so they took their leave soon after. When they left, you finally felt like you could breathe.

Soon after, both you and Jungkook went to the vet to pick up Buster and once you saw him walking towards you, your worries instantly melted away.

You let Jungkook play with Buster as you went to settle the bill.

“Name, please?”

“Y/N, Y/L/N.”

“Right, the treatment costs $3500. Would you like pay by cash or credit?”

3500.

You weren’t even sure if you had that much to spare considering that it was nearing the end of the month and you had used up most of your money.

“Can I pay by installments?”

“Sure, just let me—“ She stops mid-sentence to squint at the computer screen. “Oh, wait the bill has already been settled! Sorry about that, I missed the little side note on the screen.” She says with an apologetic bow.

“I-I think you’re mistaken, I’m Buster’s owner and—“

“All done, Y/N? Let’s go! Buster wants to go to the park.” Jungkook says as he walks up to you.

Buster barks excitedly as he hears the word ‘park’.

“No, wait… the payment she said—“

“Yeah, I settled it earlier… before I got to the coffee shop.”

“Jungkook, I can’t let you—“ Jungkook shushes you and grabs your wrist to lead you out of the clinic. “Thank you, miss! We’ll be leaving now.” He says with a slight bow before dragging you out of the clinic and forcing you into his car.

You sat in the passenger seat, continually begging him to let you pay him back the $3500 but he kept saying no.

“Jungkook. I know $3500 isn’t a lot to you but it is to me and I can’t just not return—“

“So, who exactly is Hoseok?”

You shift in your seat uncomfortably and your lips form a tight line.

“Would you look at that? Y/N suddenly has nothing to say,” Jungkook says playfully and you only continue to stare out the window.

“Y/N?”

“Huh?” You say, still in a daze.

“I said, I think I deserve an explanation.”

“Right. Hoseok…” You say while looking down at your feet. “He’s my ex.”

“Y/N, if I hadn’t realized that by now, I think the 98 above my head might as well be a zero.” Jungkook says while letting out a small laugh. “I mean, when you saw him you had a look between fear and anger so… I mean… care to explain?” He asks.

Hoseok. How do you put what happened between you and Hoseok in words? The only way you can describe it is that he had come into your life like a tornado, turning everything upside down and when he left, you were in shambles.

You had noticed him when you were in that local vocational school. He was a few grades above you but he had been the talk of the school when he first joined. He was the first student who was above a ten. In fact, he was a mid-60 and everyone couldn’t help but wonder why he would enroll himself here.

You were surprised when he came and sat by you for lunch. He introduced himself, dripping with confidence and you could only timidly reply. With time, you grew closer to him. His smile that reminded you of the sun only seemed more and more inviting with each time that you saw it.

Your life was like a routine. Eat, sleep, school, repeat but not after you met Hoseok. Every day after school, he took you on a mini adventure. It ranged from going to town to eat at a new café to visiting an abandoned subway station or to many other adventures that you struggle to recall now but you remember one day very clearly. It was the day he took you to the zoo.

Your hands pressed against the glass. There it was, the animal in all of its glory and all you could do was stare with wonder. It was a hot and humid day but as you stood in front of the containment that held the tigers, you didn’t mind the horrible weather.

“Y/N, you look like you want to climb in just to pet it.”

You let out a small laugh and hugged his arm before resting your head on it.

“Do you know what tigers symbolize?”

Hoseok shakes his head no.

“My dad’s born in the year of the tiger and he says that tigers symbolize, strength and ferociousness but most importantly, in Chinese culture the tiger is associated with the God of wealth.”

“So, tigers can make you rich?” Hoseok says with a laugh.

“Well, I don’t know… apparently they can? No harm in trying huh? Maybe if we both stand here long enough, we’ll be rich when we’re older.”

Hoseok humours you and stands beside you as you continue to marvel at the tigers. He rests his head on top of yours, and takes the time to gather his thoughts, to practice the sentences that he would soon be saying.

After the zoo, he brought you to the lookout point that the both of you would always frequent. You had been seeing each other for close to 6 months now and all you could think about was how those 6 months had been the best months you have had in your whole entire life. Every day when you woke up, you felt like an adventure was waiting for you and on top of that, those adventures were filled with loving words and kisses. Honestly what more could you ask for?

You stood there looking out at the city below you but you could feel Hoseok nervously fidgeting beside you. You thought this was it, it was going to be the day that he would finally tell you that he loved you.

“Y/N, I have something to tell you.”

“Me too,” You say with a hint of shyness.

“Well, you first then,” He says while rubbing the back of his neck.

“No, it’s nothing really… You first!” You say almost too excitedly. You didn’t want to be the first one to say I love you because well… you were afraid.

Hoseok takes a deep breath and clenches his fist.

“Y/N, I-I think… I think we should break up.”

You took a while to reply. You felt your heart drop and your knees felt like buckling underneath you.

“W-what?”

“I-I’m breaking up with you.”

“Why? Did I do something wrong?” You croak out, your voice breaking at the last word.

Hoseok feels his heart break as he hears your voice crack. He sees your tears slowly falling down the side of your cheeks and it takes everything within him to stop himself from wiping them away and engulfing you in a hug. He didn’t want to be here saying these things to you but he had no choice.

Jimin was sat in the driver’s seat with your brother beside him. They watched as the both of you sat on a bench in the park laughing at each other while enjoying some homemade sandwiches.

“So, that’s him huh?”

“Yup… Name: Jung Hoseok. Number: 65. Occupation: Errand boy at Jeon Logistics.” Jimin answers by reading out the list of information he has on his phone.

“Oh, naïve little Y/N,” Your brother says with a shake of his head. “I assume you’ll handle this problem accordingly?”

Jimin nods his head and the both of them set off back to headquarters.

Jimin felt absolutely terrible for you. He hadn’t ever seen you smile like you did whenever you were with him. You were so happy and he wished so hard that Hoseok was a good man but when he did that background check that your family had requested, his heart broke for you. Hoseok was being paid to get close to you because at the time there were stories going around about some revolutionary system that your brother was building. His job was to find out as much as he can through you. Jimin spent all his free time to find any information he could about Hoseok. He just wanted to protect you… his adorable baby sister.

Hoseok checked his mail before leaving for school like he always did. He found a large brown envelop with no return address. He opens it and pours out the contents.

It was a neatly typed out letter attached with proof of a small shoplifting incident that he had found himself in when he was in high school. Hoseok had managed to remove it from his record by bribing a police officer. There was proof of that too. With shaky hands, he unfolded the letter.

Dear Jung Hoseok,

Are you proud of yourself for preying on a young, innocent girl? How do you sleep at night knowing that this girl fully and utterly believes that you like her when you’re only with her because of who her brother is? You’re absolutely despicable, I hope you know that.

Attached is information that I will gladly release should you choose not to comply with my instructions. There is more from where this came from so I suggest that you do as I say.

 Break up with Y/N.

Don’t tell her that you work for Jeon Logistics. Make up some bullshit excuse for the break-up. Just never let her know that you dated her just so you could milk information out of her.

I never want to see you around her again. Ever.

Absolutely zero communication between you. This includes texts, calls, Facebook and every other form of communication.

You have a week to carry these out before your records are made known to the public and your current employers.

Hoseok felt his heart beat rapidly in his chest. Too many thoughts were going around in his head and he wasn’t sure what to do anymore. If his records were released, he would never be able to find a job again or at least the cop that he bribed would make sure of it since he’ll be out of a job too.

He never meant to get attached to you. He kept reminding himself each day that this was only a job but he couldn’t help it. You were the nicest soul he had ever met and every time he was with you, he wished he had met you under different circumstances. He knew this relationship wouldn’t last, he knew it would have to end but he would always set aside that thought… hoping that the universe would work in his favour and that somehow the both of you would be able to be together. Looks like the universe has other plans was all Hoseok could think of as he skimmed over the letter once more.

“Tell me what I did wrong. I’ll do anything, I’ll fix it,” You beg as you hold Hoseok’s hand between yours.

“I… It’s… your number.”

Your heart drops. The only thing you can’t fix.

“I swear, I’m so much more than this four. You know I am!”

Hoseok fights back tears. He wished there was an easier way to do this. He felt the pain tearing through his heart as more tears stream down your face. He needed you to hate him. That was the only way you would stay away from him. The only way he could keep himself away from you.

“You… you’re just not enough… for me. You’re not smart enough and you’re not woman enough… for me.”

“Oh,” was all you managed to squeak out in response. You felt the last remaining pieces of your heart break further into smaller pieces. You couldn’t find the words to say to express all that you felt. All you know was you hate Jung Hoseok. If you weren’t enough all this time, then why the hell did he string you along?

You gather yourself, hoping to walk away with your dignity intact. You force yourself to look him in the eye before slapping him across the face. He stands there, still staring back at you and you let out a scoff.

“I fucking hate you, Jung Hoseok. I never want to see you again,” You spit out.

You storm off, calling a cab to come pick you up. You hope it arrives soon before you break down right here, right now.

When you finally leave, Hoseok lets his tears fall. I never want to see you again. Good, because he knows that he wouldn’t be able to hold himself back if he ever saw you again. He would be down on his knees in a heartbeat, begging for you to take him back. The universe is so cruel, he thought. The girl he loved just had to be someone he could never be with.

You spare Jungkook the details of your relationship with Hoseok, just mentioning that he was your first serious boyfriend. You tell him about the break-up and you meant to keep it short but the words come spilling out of you. You reiterate his sentences, word for word and it surprises you. You always thought you were over it all because it had been over 2 years since you last saw him standing there at the lookout point… of course until you saw him today.

“What?! He fucking said that to you?” Jungkook says as he jumps off the bench. “Y/N, why didn’t you tell me this earlier? I would’ve beaten him up for you!” He says, arms flying everywhere as he reacts to what you’ve just told him.

You laugh at how Jungkook seems to be taking this way worse than you are.

“I’m over it, Jungkook. He’s not worth my time.”

“I know, but still…. What a fucking asshole. I knew something was up with him.” Jungkook sneers.

“He was a nice guy, really…. Up until that day of course… but he was just really a sweet guy.”

“Well, don’t you want to at least hit him one more time? For revenge or closure? I’ll gladly do it for you.” Jungkook says as he takes a seat back on the bench.

You find Jungkook’s overreaction to the situation endearing and you can only smile at his suggestion.

“No Jungkook, I don’t,” You say as you laugh lightly. “Anyway, the best form of revenge is showing that I’m doing better without him.”

“So… you’re saying I’m better than him?” Jungkook questions with his head cocked to one side and his signature smirk makes an appearance.

“I didn’t say that.”

“That’s what you implied,” He says inching closer to you.

“I meant your number is way higher than his… so yeah.”

Jungkook feels his heart drumming in his chest but he thinks it’s now or never. With how much you’ve opened up to him within the past day and a half, he thinks this is the best chance he’s ever going to get.

He takes his time to gather up some courage and moves to hold your hands in his. “Y/N, you know I wouldn’t say I’m the best at flirting but I’d like to think that I’ve been dropping some pretty clear hints lately.”

“I… W-what?”

You know what he’s trying to say but it takes you by surprise, this sudden change in topic.

“Y/N, I like you. Like a lot and… I don’t know if you feel the same but I just feel like I needed to tell you that. You might not feel the same and that’s—“

You remove your hands from his hold and you tug him towards you, pressing your lips on his lightly before backing away quickly, almost as if you were embarrassed. Jungkook brings his fingers up to his lips and the brightest smile you’ve ever seen replaces the initial look of shock that he had.

He pulls you back towards him and he plants his lips on yours. This kiss was unlike the one in the coffee shop. It was slow and light and he cupped your face tenderly as he pulled you closer towards him. You let your arms rest on his shoulders and you lick the bottom of his lips and he parts them for you. Then you feel Jungkook smile into the kiss and the both of you pull away to laugh when you feel Buster trying to come in between by licking the both of you in the face.

“Looking to get in on the action too huh buddy?” Jungkook says as he brings Buster up onto his lap. Buster only barks excitedly while wagging his tail and you lovingly pet him.

Jungkook interlaces his fingers with yours and brings your hand up to his lips so he can leave a light kiss.

“I’ve been wanting to kiss you like that all day, you know?”

You blush at that and you rest your head on his shoulder. Jungkook turns to leave a soft kiss on the top of your head.

“You know, this month has just been an absolute roller coaster but I don’t know… It’s been great overall. I think this month might just be my favourite,” You say as you recall the events of the past month.

From the Gala to Buster’s emergency to seeing Hoseok, everything seemed to pile up. There were many things that happened throughout the month but there was one constant and that was Jungkook. He was there at all the important moments and sitting here, with his hand in yours, you couldn’t think of a better way to end the month.

“When’s your birthday again?” Jungkook asks.

“(Your birth month), why?”

“Well that’s my favourite month because it’s the month you were born in,” He says with a shy smile.

“God, you’re so cheesy!” You say as you lightly shove him. He laughs and you see the slight blush that tints his cheeks.

“Actually, to my family, my birth month is synonymous with the feeling of disappointment.”

“What, why?”

“My birth was a highly anticipated one. My parents thought I’d be a high ninety…. Which meant my family would qualify for the high potential stipend. All my parents did in the months leading up to my birth was think about all the money they were going to get,” You say as you look out towards the young kids running around the park.

You take a deep breath before you continue. “Then, I popped out and the number above my head wasn’t close to ninety. I mean it wasn’t even a double digit so… Anyway, my father says if we could get through the disappointment that was (Your Birth Month) then we can get through anything.”

“That’s… I… You know what, it’s still my favourite month.” Jungkook says adamantly. He looks at you and he can see how it hurt, talking about yourself in that light.

“Y/N, I hope you know that your number means nothing to me. When I look at you, I know the number above your head does you no justice. I’m telling you this because I think your family never did. You’re amazing, smart and kind and I hope you know that,” Jungkook says as he strokes your cheek lovingly. You lean into his touch and you start to feel tears well up in the corner of your eyes. You murmur a soft thank you and he smiles in response.

“Also, I don’t know what the hell Hoseok is talking about because… you are enough. More than enough even and… You’re woman enough… in fact definitely woman enough because I saw you in that swimming suit when we first met and—“

“You were doing so well Jungkook,” You say with a deep sigh. “I thought maybe when we got back to your cabin we could get a little something something started but I guess that’s out the window now.”

“Hey. Wait. Hold on. You didn’t tell me that a night with you was on the line! Uh let’s rewind here… Where was I again? Right, you’re definitely woman enough and I.. Wait, where are you going?”

You pull your hand away from his hold and you start walking away from the bench. You call for Buster to join you and you see Jungkook start to get up. You start sprinting, running as fast as you can but obviously Jungkook catches up with you within seconds.

He wraps his arms around your waist from behind and plants kisses all over the side of your face.

“It’s too late, you can’t run from me. You kissed me and that sealed the deal. You can’t get rid of me now.”

You groan out aloud in frustration. “I think I might’ve made the worst decision of my life today.”

Jungkook pouts at you and then it’s quickly replaced with a smile.

“I think I might’ve made the best decision of my life today.”

You blush upon hearing the sentence and quickly try to change the topic. “Hey Jungkook, you know that $3500 you paid for at the clinic, I’m going to return the money to you somehow…”

Jungkook groans out now. “I can’t believe you’re still thinking about that. Think of it as Buster’s birthday present.” He says as he rests his chin on top of your head.

“Wow, if that’s how much you’re willing to spend for his birthday, I can only imagine what my present’s going to look like,” You say as you turn back to look at him.

“Oh, yours? I’ll give you a hint. It’s priceless. It’s me… but with no clothes on,” Jungkook says with a huge smirk on his face.

“You’re so… I can’t believe you!” You say with a disgusted look on your face. You use your hands to claw at his arms, desperately trying to escape from his hold but he only wraps his arms around you tighter as he laughs at your blush tinted cheeks. There’s no place he’d rather be right now. The girl that seemed to understand him the most was wrapped up in his arms, laughing with him and he felt like for the first time in a long time, everything was right where it’s supposed to be. In fact, he was so happy that he didn’t seem to notice the pair of eyes that were watching the both of you from afar.
