Faced with the specter of war, the emperor summoned Aiden to his private chamber to declare the need to expedite the engagement celebration. The looming threat of war necessitated the emperor to lead his forces into battle, and it was imperative that Aiden be solidly betrothed should he need to ascend to the throne if harm befell the emperor. Aiden was painfully aware that history might repeat itself, likely rendering his father grievously injured in the conflict and eventually succumbing to his wounds.
"Father, if war is upon us, please bestow the emperorship upon me now and let me go to war in your stead."
"What are you saying? You are young and my sole heir, I cannot send you into battle. It would be wiser for me to go."
"Father! You are far better suited to rule than I."
"Aiden, I have spoken. Inform Miss Raven that the ceremony will be brought forward."
Despite aching to challenge his father's command, Aiden knew the emperor was resolute, leaving him no choice but to comply. With a slight bow, he takes his leave. There was no rendezvous scheduled with Raven, yet circumstances demanded he pay her an unforeseen call.
He summoned a carriage to whisk him directly to the Brooke mansion. Upon arrival, he was informed Raven was out, so he requested an audience with the Duchess and Duke. The servant permitted his entry and went to fetch the Brookes.
In the study room, the Brooke couple sat before a jittery Aiden.
"I understand that you plan to marry Raven, Your Highness."
"Yes, Duke, my intentions are genuine, and I am here to convey that the engagement ceremony will be hastened by my father's command."
"It seems he wishes to accelerate matters. You are, I presume, aware of our current predicament."
"Yes, and for that very reason, my father desires to see me prepared to assume the throne should the unfortunate occur upon his departure to the front."
Aiden yearned to prevent this outcome, but his father matched his own stubbornness, and he knew well that even if he were to go, the emperor might venture after him and forcibly bring him back.
"Agreed, should Raven harbor no objections, nor shall we."
"Whatever assistance you require, I will provide, and the ceremony could even be held at this residence."
"Thank you, but it shall take place at the palace. However, Lady Jones is certain to be appreciative of any assistance you offer in the planning."
"Wonderful, though we must first seek Raven's perspective on the matter."
He presumed Raven wouldn't oppose. Once she returned, Aiden briefed her on the exigency of advancing their engagement, contrasting sharply with their conversation the previous day when concerns seemed remote. Raven didn't dissent, acknowledging necessity and upholding their accord. Moreover, should it come to pass, she too was willing to join the fight. Her prowess in battle might be minimal, but her desire to aid and shield those who nurtured her from the ravages of war was resolute. Before parting, Aiden assured the Duchess he would send Lady Jones to co-ordinate the preparations, as he was preoccupied with other duties. Nevertheless, he and Raven had agreed to jointly select her attire for the occasion.
