The Break in the veil

Chapter 4: The Break in the Veil

The ink-symbol on the window pulsed once… then vanished.

Kael stood frozen, eyes narrowed. “That wasn’t an omen. That was a *summon.*”

“A what?” Eliar asked, already stepping back. The air around them had shifted — colder, heavier. Even the shadows in the corners of the room had begun to *move*.

Kael grabbed something from under his bed — a narrow obsidian dagger etched in glowing script.

“I hope you can run,” he said. “Because we’re about to be hunted.”

***

The lights in the hallway flickered as they burst out of Room 317. The halls were silent — too silent. No footfalls. No murmurs. Just the quiet hum of *something unnatural* creeping in.

Eliar stumbled to keep pace with Kael, who moved like someone who had done this before.

“Where are we going?” Eliar hissed.

“The Veil’s thin near the courtyard. If they’re crossing over, that’s where they’ll breach.”

“They?”

Kael didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

Because the floor behind them suddenly exploded in a *shriek of black fire.*

But this time, they stood side by side.

Two marked souls.

Two dangerous fates.

And the hunt had only just begun.

---

Eliar turned just in time to see a figure emerge from the smoke — tall, faceless, made of ash and bone, with fingers like hooked blades.

Its voice wasn’t a voice at all.

*"Return what was fractured."*

Kael spun, flinging a sigil from his dagger into the air. It erupted into a blue shield just as the creature lunged.

“Go!” Kael shouted.

Eliar ran.

But not away.

He ran *toward* the courtyard.

Toward whatever waited for them.

Because the symbol on his wrist had begun to glow.

And somewhere deep in his bones, he felt it.

*He wasn’t supposed to run anymore.*

***

The courtyard was a ruined cathedral of moonlight and old stone.

As Eliar skidded into it, a second creature dropped from the sky — wings like torn parchment, a crown of thorns curling from its head.

Kael arrived behind him, blood at his lip, dragging his dagger across his palm.

“Stay behind me.”

“No,” Eliar said. And raised his hand.

A pulse of *raw force* exploded from his palm — untrained, unrefined, but *real.*

It hit the creature mid-air, throwing it into the wall with a guttural screech.

Kael blinked. “Well... damn.”

Eliar panted. His vision swam.

“I don’t know how I did that.”

Kael wiped his blade. “You don’t have to know. Just *keep doing it.*”

The air shimmered again.

More were coming.
