The corridors of Velar palace were never meant for running.
They were meant for slow, dignified strides; for parades of silk and ceremony. But now Elias tore through them, cape flaring behind him, his boots echoing like thunder on the polished floor. Kip ran ahead, barefoot and laughing, scattering the occasional illusion like bread crumbs.
Behind them came the clatter of armor and the shouts of guards.
"Left!" Kip called.
"This is madness!" Elias gasped.
"Accurate!" Kip swerved, nearly colliding with a statue of king Velar the First. The marble king's head promptly rotated to follow them, grumbling,"No running in the halls."
Elias blinked." Did that --?"
"Complain? Yes. Excellent acoustic in here."
They darted through a long gallery where oil paintings lined the wall. Kip snapped his fingers as they passed, and each portrait began to heckle the guards chasing them.
"Cowards!" shouted a painted general.
"Wrong way!" yelled a noble woman, pointing down a false corridor.
"Who polished theis floor? I snapped --" thud!-- one guard went down sliding on his own shield.
Elias clutched at the side of a pillar, half laughing, half horrified." Stop tampering with the royal portraits!"
"I'm improving morale," Kip said." Yours, mostly."
A new alarm bell rang deeper in the palace. Magic SIGILL glowed along the ceiling -- containment wards flashing into place.
The air grew heavier, thicker, as if the palace itself were trying to trap them. Elias slowed." They're sealing the exits."
Kip stopped too, expression shifting from playful to focused,"Not all of them."
He turned sharply down a narrow servant's passage --low ceiling, scent of dust and soapstone --and begun tracing something on the wall with his fingertip. Faint violet light followed the movement forming a shape that looked more dream the rune.Elias watched, awed despite himself. 'You remember the hidden way ."
"Of course I do". I used to sneak you out of lessons though this one ". Kip pressed his hand flat to the rune."You were miserable even then."
The wall shimmered and a small door -- previously invisible --clicked open Beyond it lay the chill of night air and the faint hum of city light below.Elias hesitated at the threshold, staring out at the unfamiliar dark.He had never stepped outside the palace without escort.
Kip turn, flour still streaking his cheek, grin crooked. " Coming, Your Majesty?"
For a heartbeat,Elias almost laughed."You realize this is treason."
"Everything fun usually is."
Voices echoed behind them --the guards closing in. Elias looked from the corridor to Kip, then took a breath and stepped through.
The door sealed behind them like the blink of a dream. They emerged into the palace courtyard, moonlight glinting off fountains and rosebushes. The air smelled of wet stone and freedom. Kip tripped his head back and inhaled deeply.
"Ah," he said." Reality. Smells the same, but feel less polite.
Elias leaned against a pillar, trying to steady his breath. What have I done?"
Kip glanced sideways at him."You told a room full of people what you wanted and actually did it. Terrifying isn't it?"
Elias almost laughed --almost. "You're impossible".
"And you," Kip said, stepping closer, eyes glinting with mischief and something warmer, are taller. And duller.
"We'll fix that."
Elias opened his mouth to retort, but Kip was already walking forward the garden gate, humming to himself.
The prince hesitated one last moment -- then followed, the sound of distant bells fading behind him as he stepped into the unknown.
