Chapter 4: A King's Concerns and a Knight's Resolve

King Theron was enjoying a rare moment of peace in his private garden, the scent of roses filling the air as he sipped his morning tea. However, the tranquility was soon to be disrupted by the familiar sound of hurried footsteps.

“Father!” Princess Cara burst into the garden, her cheeks flushed and her eyes sparkling with an almost manic energy. “You won’t believe what Seraphina is going to teach me!”

The King sighed, placing his teacup down with a gentle clink. “Let me guess. The proper application of a tourniquet? Or perhaps the strategic deployment of caltrops?”

“Even better!” Cara exclaimed, pulling up a chair beside him. “Flanking maneuvers! She’s going to explain the whole thing to me after her morning training. Apparently, it involves… going around the side and… surprising people!”

King Theron raised a skeptical eyebrow. “Cara, while I appreciate your newfound interest in military strategy, are you certain this… fascination with Knight Seraphina isn’t becoming a tad… all-consuming?”

“But Papa,” Cara protested, her enthusiasm undimmed, “Seraphina is brilliant! She knows so much about… about everything! And she’s actually quite funny, in a very dry, understated way. You just have to listen closely.”

“Funny?” the King repeated, a hint of disbelief in his voice. “The last time I saw Knight Seraphina, she was single-handedly dismantling a rogue catapult that had somehow ended up in the royal courtyard. There was nothing remotely humorous about the situation, especially the paperwork that followed.”

“Oh, but it was!” Cara insisted. “The way she just… took charge! And then she made a comment about the catapult being ‘aggressively misplaced.’ It was hilarious!”

The King rubbed his temples again. “Cara, my dear, I am genuinely pleased that you have found a companion whose company you enjoy. However, I have certain… concerns.”

“Concerns?” Cara’s brow furrowed. “What sort of concerns?”

“Well,” the King began, choosing his words carefully, “Seraphina is a dedicated member of the military. Her life is one of duty and discipline. Are you certain that your… rather different lifestyle is compatible with hers?”

“But opposites attract, Papa!” Cara declared. “She’s all stern and strong, and I’m… well, I’m good at cheering people up! We balance each other out!”

“And what of your future, Cara?” the King asked gently. “There are expectations, responsibilities. You will one day need to consider… matters of succession.”

Cara waved a dismissive hand. “Oh, pooh to succession! We’ll figure it out. Maybe Seraphina can teach our heir how to wield a sword before they can even walk! Wouldn’t that be efficient?”

The King sighed. He knew that arguing with Cara when she had her mind set on something was like trying to herd particularly stubborn geese.

Later that day, King Theron sought out Knight Seraphina in the training yard. He found her overseeing a group of young squires practicing their swordplay, her stern gaze ensuring their movements were precise and efficient.

“Knight Seraphina,” the King said, approaching her.

Seraphina immediately straightened, her hand instinctively moving towards the hilt of her sword before she remembered it was only the King. “Your Majesty.”

“May I have a word with you?” the King asked.

Seraphina nodded curtly and dismissed the squires. They moved to a quieter corner of the yard.

“Knight Seraphina,” the King began, his tone serious, “I must confess, Princess Cara’s… burgeoning affection for you has caused me some… unease.”

Seraphina’s expression remained impassive. “I am aware of the Princess’s… attention, Your Majesty.”

“And what are your feelings on the matter?” the King asked directly.

Seraphina hesitated for a moment, her gaze fixed on a distant training dummy. “I… I hold the Princess in high regard, Your Majesty. She is… spirited. And possesses a… unique perspective.”

The King waited, sensing there was more to come.

“However,” Seraphina continued, her voice firm, “my life is dedicated to the service of the crown. My duty lies with the military. My priorities are clear.”

“And where does the Princess fit into those priorities, Knight Seraphina?” the King pressed.

Seraphina finally met his gaze, her emerald eyes unwavering. “The Princess is… a distraction, Your Majesty. A pleasant one, perhaps, but a distraction nonetheless. I have no intention of allowing any personal feelings to interfere with my duty.”

The King studied her carefully, trying to discern the truth behind her stoic facade. He sensed a genuine commitment to her responsibilities, but also perhaps a hint of something else… a flicker of the “pleasant distraction” she had mentioned.

“Knight Seraphina,” the King said, his voice softening slightly, “my daughter is… unconventional. She is impulsive and often acts without thinking. But she is also kind-hearted and fiercely loyal to those she cares about.”

“I have observed these qualities, Your Majesty,” Seraphina acknowledged.

“And I would not want to see her… hurt,” the King continued. “If your feelings for her are not genuine, or if you believe that a relationship between you is impossible, then I would ask you to be… honest with her.”

Seraphina’s jaw tightened slightly. “My intentions are honorable, Your Majesty. I would never intentionally cause the Princess harm. However, as I said, my duty comes first.”

The King nodded slowly. He respected Seraphina’s dedication, but he couldn’t shake the feeling that Cara was heading for a potential heartbreak.

“Very well, Knight Seraphina,” the King said. “I appreciate your honesty. I only ask that you consider the Princess’s feelings, even as you uphold your duty.”

Seraphina gave a curt nod. “I understand, Your Majesty.”

As the King walked away, he couldn’t help but wonder if Seraphina truly understood the depth of Cara’s affections. And more importantly, he wondered if the knight’s unwavering resolve was truly as impenetrable as it seemed.
