Episode 3 : The Northern Road

The wind carried a crisp chill as Kaelen and Selene rode along the northern road, the walls of Tharith fading behind them. Caravans of traders hurried past, anxious faces reflecting the unrest that had reached even the kingdom’s borders. Kaelen’s hand rested on her sword hilt, eyes scanning the horizon for any hint of danger.

Selene rode beside her, calm and composed, though Kaelen could sense the tension beneath the princess’s regal exterior. Every movement was deliberate, every glance precise, betraying a mind constantly calculating possibilities. Kaelen had faced skilled opponents before, but she realized this foreign princess was just as sharp, if not sharper, than any warrior she had sparred with in the training yard.

“You seem… tense,” Selene said after a while, her voice light but not careless. “Do you worry for yourself, or for the kingdom?”

Kaelen hesitated. She wanted to say both, but instead she replied, “Perhaps for both. Danger tends to choose its own path, regardless of our wishes.”

Selene nodded thoughtfully. “Wise. But remember, Kaelen, courage is not the absence of fear. It is acting despite it.”

The words struck a chord deep within Kaelen. She had always understood the principle, yet hearing it now—from someone who had every right to command from a distance—made it feel personal, almost intimate. She met Selene’s gaze for a brief moment, sensing a connection she could not yet define.

As they rode deeper into the northern forests, the sound of hooves and wagons was replaced by the whisper of wind through the pines. The road narrowed, shadows lengthening. Kaelen’s instincts sharpened. “Something’s off,” she muttered.

Selene tilted her head, scanning the surroundings. “I see it too. Keep your senses open.”

Before Kaelen could respond, a group of masked figures leaped from the tree line, blocking the road. Weapons glinted in the fading sunlight, their movements coordinated and precise. Mercenaries—exactly as the messenger had warned.

Kaelen’s pulse quickened. “Selene, stay behind me.”

Selene drew her blade gracefully, stepping forward with a calm confidence that unsettled Kaelen in a strange way. “I intend to stand beside you,” she said firmly.

The mercenaries advanced. Kaelen moved first, her sword slicing through the nearest attacker with practiced ease. Selene’s blade followed in perfect sync, each strike precise, each movement complementary to Kaelen’s. Together, they formed an unspoken rhythm, a silent partnership forged in the heat of battle.

Despite the danger, Kaelen felt something she had not felt before: exhilaration, trust, and a connection that went beyond words. Selene’s presence sharpened her senses, her confidence, her resolve. They were more than allies in battle—they were becoming something far more intertwined.

When the last mercenary fell, the forest returned to its quiet stillness, broken only by the labored breathing of the two princesses. Kaelen lowered her sword, her chest heaving, and glanced at Selene.

“You fight well,” she said, a faint smile breaking through her exhaustion.

Selene’s violet eyes softened. “So do you, Kaelen. I think… we make a good team.”

Kaelen’s heart skipped a beat. Teamwork was always vital, but this felt different—personal. Something unspoken hung between them, a fragile thread of trust and curiosity, hinting at something neither was ready to name.

The northern road stretched ahead, darkening as dusk approached. Kaelen and Selene rode side by side, their swords sheathed for the moment but their bond strengthened by the first real test. Whatever awaited them ahead, Kaelen knew one thing: she would face it with Selene by her side, and the journey had only just begun.
