No Turning Back

(Scene opens with Liam and Ava in Liam's sparsely furnished apartment. The mood is tense after Liam's partial confession at the end of Chapter 3.)

Liam: (Sighs heavily) Okay, Ava. You deserve to know something, but you have to understand, this is incredibly dangerous.

Ava: (Arms crossed, skeptical) Start talking, Liam... or Daniel... or whoever you really are.

Liam: My real name is Daniel Hayes. I used to work as an undercover operative for a government agency. We were investigating a dangerous criminal organization involved in trafficking.

Ava: Trafficking? What kind?

Liam: Human trafficking, drugs, weapons... you name it. They were ruthless. I got too close, uncovered too much. They found out who I was, and they came after me. I had to disappear, change my identity to protect myself and the people I cared about.

Ava: (Eyes narrowed) And that's why you're living here, in Havenwood, under a false name?

Liam: Yes. I thought I was safe here, that I'd lost them. But clearly, they've found me. And now, they've found you.

Ava: (Shakes her head) I don't know what to believe. This sounds like something out of a movie.

Liam: I wish it were.

(Suddenly, a brick shatters the window. Liam shoves Ava to the ground.)

Liam: Get down!

(Liam grabs a hidden pistol from under the mattress and returns fire out the window. A brief exchange of gunfire ensues.)

Liam: They know we're here. We have to go. Now!

Ava: Go where? I don't understand!

Liam: There's no time to explain. Just trust me. We're not safe here anymore. They'll keep coming.

(Liam grabs a backpack he had pre-packed with essentials – cash, a map, a change of clothes, and a few other items. He pulls Ava to her feet.)

Liam: We're leaving Havenwood. Tonight.

Ava: What about my job? My apartment? My life?

Liam: I'm sorry, Ava. I know this is a lot to ask, but your life is in danger. We have to disappear.

(They slip out the back of the apartment building and into the rainy night. Liam leads Ava through a maze of back streets, avoiding main roads.)

Ava: (Out of breath) Where are we going?

Liam: I have a contact in Bicol. He can help us get new identities, disappear for good.

Ava: Bicol? That's hundreds of kilometers away!

Liam: It's the only place I know we'll be safe.

(They reach a deserted highway outside of Havenwood. Liam flags down a passing truck driver.)

Liam: (To the truck driver) We need a ride. As far south as you're going. We'll pay.

(The truck driver eyes them suspiciously but nods.)

Truck Driver: Get in.

(Ava and Liam climb into the back of the truck, huddled together against the cold and the rain. As they drive away from Havenwood, Ava looks back, her face a mixture of fear and uncertainty.)

Ava: (Whispering) What have we done?

Liam: (Putting his arm around her) We're going to survive, Ava. I promise you. We'll start a new life, far away from here. But we have to do it together.

(The scene fades as the truck disappears into the night, leaving Havenwood behind.)
