4: Samuel

They boarded the plane and sat on their seats, Samuel paused when he checked then rechecked again and again his seat number.

Luck was definitely not on his side. His seat was assigned next to Laura as if fate was mocking him from afar. Theodore was unlucky to sit next to Professor Gina and Celine somewhere in the back.

The middle chair between Laura and someone who didn't come yet. When the person comes he would fight for the seat by the corridor no matter how crowded it will be.

Laura put her headphones on, buckled her belt, put over her blanket and her sleeping goggles. Then disconnected herself from the world.

He noticed her hands slightly trembling and chose to ignore it and take his seat. An old lady sat next to him, she didn't seem nice with her expensive attire and useless sunglasses inside the plane.

Before he could tell her anything Celine popped her head and said "sorry to bother you Samuel but Laura cannot stand planes, can you please forget your hatred for the next hours?"

"Are you joking?" He raised his eyebrows.

"Yes, worse case scenario she would need the oxygen thingies up there, I really didn't think our seating will be like this. Please do it for me."

"I don't want to." He mumbled.

"I know and she gets annoying too." Celine gave him a stress ball and said "but she is really bad with planes so stay by her side and maybe make her forget that we are very high up from land."

Again, he was interrupted before he spoke, the flight attendants were telling everyone to take a seat and the pilot was talking on the speakers. Celine begged with her eyes and rushed back to her seat.

"Make sure your girl has her belts on." The old woman snorted.

And with that the chances of him sleeping through the plane became negative one million. The flight attendant passed by and asked him if everything was alright, he made a quick check on Laura seat belt and the oxygen tube wasn't stuck then informed the attendant that everything was alright.

He wasn't sure that if she was even sleeping or no, she seemed pretty shaken so he kept an eye.

The plane moved and he felt a hand over his, Laura's hand, she clenched on his hand and dug her nails on his knuckles. He looked at her and saw how labored her breath was. She was sweating a waterfall and clutching her stomach with her other hand.

Samuel was accustomed to planes so he only looked at Laura while the plane ascended. She was getting clearly worse at breathing, and in the minutes the plane leveled itself in the air she began gasping.

Samuel pressed the bottom and put the oxygen tube over her mouth and nose, "breath, Laura." He told her, he held the tube in place and she grabbed his hands and began breathing through the tube.

He removed her sleeping goggles, he knew closing her eyes would only widen her imagination, she needed to see they were safe. He held the back of her head in place till her breath calmed.

"Is everything alright?" A flight attendant was already by their side.

Laura nodded through teary eyes muttering "I will be fine."

Samuel noticed her eyes falling down, she hated attention. He looked at the attendant and told her "it is okay now, I will be with her."

The attendant retreated hesitantly "call us if you need anything."

She left and Samuel rested Laura head back on her seat still holding the oxygen tube to her face. "Do you need anything."

"I know you hate this so just leave me alone." She looked away.

Samuel was about to snap and shake her and show her that he was more frightening than the plane but he restrained himself, reminding himself that she was most vulnerable now that why she was on guard.

He forced himself to be understanding and handed her the stress ball and "whatever you say," he put on his own headphones and said "then don't call me."

Laura was the prideful type of people, unless she was dying she would never call for him but that thought wasn't exactly comforting at the moment so he made sure there was no songs playing and opened a book he brought to read.

He began reading, still it felt like his eyes were only tracing the words, his mind and all his attention was on Laura, she put back the oxygen tube in place and tried to sleep, shifting from a position to another.

He was starting to get irritated with her constant moving but he ignored her, she should ask for help.

The lady next to him frowned and said "seriously will you talk to the poor girl and calm her down, someone is trying to sleep here." She removed his headphones and said "and I know you are not listening to anything."

Samuel rubbed his face and sighed a long sigh. Why should he babysit her? Who put their seating this way?

"I am checking all my cute students." Professor Gina beamed, popping her head everywhere to ensure everyone was in place. Theodore behind her keeping reports.

He will kill her! He was certain she did it on purpose to mess with him.

"Everything alright, Samuel, Laura?" She asked sweetly.

"I am starting to hate you a little." He answered.

"What was that?" She mused with her hand on her ears like she didn't hear him.

"Everything is alright." He forced a smile. "Laura hadn't been feeling well and now she is fine."

"Fine, my foot!" Laura whispered to his side while glaring at the professor with disdain.

Samuel hurriedly closed her mouth with his palm "we are okay, Professor." He looked at Theodore for help and Theodore dragged the grinning professor to the next seat where two students were whispering among themselves.

"How about you hold this and try to calm down." Samuel handed her her stress ball. "Try to not think about anything."

Laura held the ball and squeezed it once. Her face twisted a bit "I think I will throw up." She mumbled.

"I will call the attendant." Samuel was about to raise his hand but Laura stopped him, he wasn't completely heartless to leave a sick person unattended but he would really not like dealing with vomit in the trip.

"I will just drink some water." She reassured him.

"You will not drink anything unless you eat." He called the flight attendant and asked for some snacks and juice. Once they left he handed Laura a meat sandwich, a small chocolate cake and an apple juice. "You still love apple juice, right? Make sure to empty everything."
