The Phoenix

The phoenix is a majestic animal composed entirely of flame with an emerald beak, diamond-like deer, and eyes through which it is said that one can see the future.

The story I am about to tell you is about the encounter between this bird and a man named Py.

Py lived in a distant land at a time when people lived in caves and subsisted on gathering and hunting. Men were dressed in skins and the wide world was unknown.

Only the brave could go out and hunt, and food was often meager. Moreover, many men did not return, either killed by an animal or lost their way. Only one in his tribe who became blind after an outing was an exception.

This man had told him of a nearby cave where it was now forbidden to go because inside lived the beast that had blinded him and whose description frightened everyone.

Py was designated for the hunt that day. He made a mass with his stick and set off with the others but got lost along the way.

Hours passed, and not knowing how to get back, he decided to find shelter for the night.

He settled down at the entrance of a cave on a small promontory, afraid to go any deeper into the dark cave.

The rain then began to fall heavily, and suddenly a flash of light crossed the cave, followed by the shrill cry of a bird of prey.

Wondering what he had just seen, he climbed down from his promontory, armed himself with his stick, and advanced very cautiously toward the back of the cave.

A bright light illuminated the interior, so bright that all the animals fled outside.

The further he advanced, the hotter it became.

It was at the bottom of a sort of crevasse that he saw it flapping its wings and burning with a thousand fires.

The phoenix looked into his eyes, and what our friend saw at that moment was beyond comprehension.

You'll remember that the Phoenix allows one to see the future, and here is what he later described to his tribesman.

Piles of stones reaching up to the sky, with caves filled with people, moving boxes with people inside, meat on the end of a rope carried by men, men trading outside without fear of any predators, people on the water in a box that had come from far away. In short... the Future.

Py was stunned by what he had just seen and stood up with a cry of amazement. He hadn't realized it, but the rain had stopped, and rising, the Phoenix took flight and kissed his staff as he left the cave.

Panicized, he ran and found his way back to the cave where he was welcomed as a hero, for, you see, he had just brought fire.

Later, Py became the "Shaman" of his tribe and passed on the secret of fire to his apprentice in these words:

_ There, Voooum, go

And from generation to generation, thanks to this discovery, man evolved. The end.
