*Chapter 1: New Schedules, Old Feelings*
The bell rang across Haneul Academy’s quiet halls, the scent of cherry blossoms drifting through open windows. It was the first week of the new term, but tension already pulsed through the air like static.
Taehyung, a confident yet unpredictable *Alpha*, sauntered into class with his bag slung carelessly over one shoulder. Behind him trailed *Jungkook*, a quiet *Omega* who somehow always ended up paired with Taehyung — seatmates since middle school, and now, uncomfortably close in their last year.
They hadn’t spoken much since summer break. Not since the night Taehyung had nearly confessed... and then backed out.
"Hey," Taehyung said, sliding into his seat. Jungkook didn’t look up from his book.
"You’re late," Jungkook mumbled.
Taehyung grinned. “Miss me?”
Jungkook’s ears turned red, but he didn’t respond.
Across the room, *Yoongi* and *Jimin* — the academy’s quiet Beta-Omega couple — exchanged glances. Jimin nudged Yoongi with his knee under the desk. “They’re still dancing around each other.”
Yoongi sighed. “It’s gonna be a long semester.”
In the lunchroom, *Namjoon* and *Jin* were holding court like usual, Jin animatedly telling stories while Namjoon scribbled in a notebook about “Omega rights in rigid pack structures.” *Hoseok* was trying to pull *Jackson* into a dance challenge for the school festival, laughing as Jackson pretended not to care, but his tail wagged anyway.
Back in class, Taehyung caught Jungkook staring at his neck — at the faint scar where his *mark* should’ve been. He saw the way Jungkook’s fingers clenched, the way his scent spiked in distress for just a moment before being masked.
"Still unclaimed, huh?" Taehyung joked.
But Jungkook didn’t smile.
"You don’t joke about marks, Taehyung."
Something in his voice cracked. And for the first time that day, Taehyung didn’t know what to say.
-CHAPTER 2
*Chapter 2: Cracks Beneath Calm*
Taehyung didn’t speak for the rest of class. Jungkook’s words had hit too close. "You don’t joke about marks" — not when you’re an Alpha who’s been waiting to mark someone you may never have.
When the bell rang, Jungkook stood up quickly. “Don’t follow me,” he muttered.
But Taehyung did. Of course he did.
He found Jungkook behind the music hall, earbuds in, head tilted back against the wall, trying to hide the trembling in his jaw. Taehyung approached slowly.
“Why are you really mad?” he asked.
Jungkook opened his eyes. They were glassy, but hard. “Because every time I think you care, you act like it’s a joke. Like I’m a joke.”
Taehyung’s scent shifted — uncertain, almost panicked. “You’re not.”
“Then prove it.”
Before either could say more, a loud bark of laughter echoed from across the courtyard. *Jimin*, clutching his books, was being cornered by a group of sneering students — mostly unmated Alphas.
“What, waiting for your precious Alpha?” one taunted.
