The sound of expensive tires crunching against the gravel driveway broke the stillness of the late afternoon.
From the upstairs study, Han Yuze looked out the window. A sleek black sedan rolled to a stop, the sunlight catching on its polished surface. The man who stepped out was tall, impeccably dressed, his every movement deliberate.
Even without Xuyao’s fragmented memories, Yuze recognized him.
Jiang Yuehan.
Alpha. CEO of Yuehan Group. And, if the letter was to be believed, possibly the father of the child growing inside him.
Butler Chen, ever composed, stepped into the room. “He didn’t call ahead,” he murmured. “Shall I turn him away?”
Yuze smiled faintly. “No. Let’s see what kind of man comes running without warning.”
Jiang Yuehan was already in the drawing room when Yuze entered. He stood near the grand fireplace, broad shoulders straight, hands clasped loosely behind his back. His sharp eyes swept over Yuze, lingering just long enough on the curve of his belly to betray the faintest flicker of emotion—something between relief and possession.
“You’re awake,” Jiang said, his voice low but edged with something unreadable. “I came as soon as I heard.”
Yuze crossed the room at a leisurely pace, his robe brushing against the marble floor. “You heard… from whom?”
Jiang’s gaze didn’t waver. “That’s not important. What matters is that you’re alive.”
“Alive,” Yuze repeated, tilting his head. “Funny. You say that as if you weren’t sure I would be.”
A faint shadow crossed Jiang’s expression, gone as quickly as it came. “The accident—”
“Ah, yes. The accident.” Yuze’s voice was soft, almost conversational, but his eyes were as cold as the tea set between them. “You’ll have to forgive me, Jiang Yuehan. My memories of that night are… unreliable. Perhaps you could help me remember?”
Jiang’s jaw tightened. “It’s better if you don’t.”
They sat across from each other, the air between them thick with unsaid things. Jiang’s presence was magnetic, but there was a tension to it—like a wire pulled too tight.
“Tell me,” Yuze said suddenly, “in this version of events you prefer, were we lovers? Or just… an arrangement?”
Jiang didn’t blink. “We were more than that.”
“More than that?” Yuze’s lips curved in a faint smile. “And yet you weren’t here when I woke up. You weren’t here when I was alone. Or when the household rotted from the inside.”
Jiang leaned forward, his voice dropping to a near growl. “You think I didn’t want to be? You think I wasn’t—” He cut himself off, his gaze darting briefly toward Butler Chen, who was quietly pouring tea.
Yuze caught it instantly. So there’s something you can’t say in front of him.
When the tea was served, Yuze took a slow sip, his eyes never leaving Jiang’s face.
“You know,” he said lightly, “I found something in my room. A letter. No full name, just an initial—J. A promise to come back for me and the child.”
Jiang’s grip on his cup tightened, the faintest tremor running through his hand. “Then you know it was me.”
“Oh, I know it could be you,” Yuze replied smoothly. “But there are other names. Other… possibilities.”
That flash of possessiveness—there and gone—told Yuze he’d struck the right nerve.
When Jiang finally rose to leave, he paused at the doorway, looking back with an intensity that might have been longing, or warning, or both.
“Whatever you remember, Xuyao… know this. I’ll protect you. Even from yourself, if I have to.”
And then he was gone, the echo of his footsteps fading down the hall.
Butler Chen closed the door softly. “He’s hiding something.”
Yuze’s smile was sharp. “Of course he is. They all are.”
He rested a hand on his stomach. Let them come. One by one, I’ll see them for who they truly are.
And if one of them was responsible for the accident…
Then this time, it would be his turn to destroy them.
