The Sole Monarch

The Sole Monarch

01.

When Danny ran into him, her world was silent. The leaves stopped rustling, the wind stopped whistling, and the sunlight glistened off his face like he was the god of the sun. Danny, as chaotic as ever, steered her bike towards him without even knowing it.

Then the world was loud again. He smiled at her, and just like she predicted, the smile was brighter, bigger, better than the sun - not uttering word, only reaching a hand out to help her out. Danny heard footsteps behind her, the boy above her looked up and glared, the footsteps then stopped adruptly. Danny frowned, standing up, she turned around the find the source of the footsteps. She was met with nothing.

And there it was - the encounter of the to be and the will be.

Danny didn't know when he left, still stuck on the shadow of him before her. Men in suits and fancy ear pieces had flocked his side and took him away. He had sighed, and Danny was a goner.

Danny spent the rest of the day in the bakery smiling to herself, wrapping up loaves of breads and rolls of cakes. Her mood lifting the mood of the grumpy customers. It wasn't until the sun was setting, positioning itself like it was just standing in front of the bakery, that it struck Danny - she'll probably never see him again. Then right before the sun disappeared, the small bell above the turquoise door rang, and he appeared again, just like fate.

He seemed sad, and tired, like he'd carried the sun himself the whole day. Only one man was beside him this time, in a suit, just like she'd seen earlier, frolicking around him like a mothe hen.

Danny didn't think as he approached the counter "Can I have your number?" the question flew out as if she'd done it a hundred times before. There it was again, the bright smile. He tilted his head, reaching his hand out, palm up.

Danny scrambled to hand him her phone. He fiddled with the phone a while, and a phone rang, it belonged to the man in the suit. Danny then found herself with a phone and a 5 dollar bill in her hand, watching the bell on the door ring again. Sadder this time.

He didn't call the next day. Danny knew it. The bakery had received a huge event order for a government event, so she didn't have the time to ponder. The man came with his team of man in suits - to pick up bread.

Danny was desperate this time. She held on the boy's sleeves as he moved to carry the paper bag. "What's your name?" The boy's eyes lit up as he saw her, he grinned, putting his hand on hers, he pulled her out of the store, raising their linked hands to tell Danny's boss that they were leaving together.

They stopped before a red sports car that seemed too expensive for this world. He opened the door, loading the bags of bread into the backseat, never letting go of Danny's hand. He then brought her to the passenger seat. The man in the suit had already opened the door, waiting. "He wants you to go with him." the man in the suit said, gesturing to the boy.

The boy gave her a reassuring smile. Danny wasn't the kind to hesitate, so she climbed in. The boy shut the door, and settled into the driver's seat. The man in the suit got into the black car before them, leading the way.

"So, are you the youngest government official that I didn't know of or something? I'm not that big of politics, but I'd think Id notice you." Danny said, nervously running her thumb over the back of her left hand.

The boy only gave out a loud laugh.
