Chapter 5: Breaking the Chains

The halls of the university felt different to Selene that morning.

The same white walls. The same noisy students. The same air filled with stress and laughter. But today, Selene felt lighter. Not because life had become easier — but because she had changed.

For the first time, she was walking her own path.

She passed students she knew, classmates who would normally see her with Elijah. Some looked confused. Some whispered. She didn’t care.

“Selene!” a voice called behind her.

She turned. It was Elijah, hurrying toward her.

He looked tired. Worried. “What’s going on? You sent a weird message last night.”

Selene took a deep breath. Her hands trembled, but her voice was steady. “We need to talk. Really talk.”

They stepped outside to a quiet garden behind the building.

“Elijah,” she began, “I know we’ve been together for a while. But I can’t do this anymore. I can’t marry you.”

His face fell. “What? Where is this coming from?”

“I’ve been lying to myself,” she said. “Doing everything to please my mother. Saying yes when I wanted to scream no. I stayed with you not because I loved you… but because it was expected.”

He stepped back. “So... it was all fake?”

“No,” she said gently. “But it wasn’t real enough. You deserve someone who truly wants this. I’m not that person.”

For a moment, Elijah was silent. His hands clenched, then slowly relaxed. “So this is goodbye?”

She nodded. “I’m sorry.”

He looked at her for a long moment. Then, without a word, he turned and walked away.

Selene closed her eyes. Her heart ached, but deep down, she felt free.

She walked across campus, her steps faster, lighter. She passed by the auditorium and paused.

She had always loved the stage — the lights, the freedom, the stories. But her mother had told her to focus on “real careers.” Acting was a dream locked away.

Not anymore.

Inside the theatre, a few students were rehearsing for the drama club. One of them, a guy with messy black hair and kind eyes, noticed her standing in the doorway.

“Hey,” he said, smiling. “You here to join?”

Selene smiled back. “Maybe. Is it too late?”

“Never too late,” he said. “I’m Adrian. You?”

“Selene.”

“Well, Selene,” he said, handing her a script, “welcome to the real stage.”

She held the paper in her hands. The words felt powerful. Like a new world waiting to open.

Later that night, Selene sat on her bed, writing in a small notebook. The moonlight spilled through her window as she wrote:

> “Day 1 — I chose myself.

Day 1 — I broke the chain.

Day 1 — I started to dream again.”

She looked in the mirror. Her reflection was the same, but the eyes staring back were brighter.

Braver.

This was just the beginning.

She had six days left.

Six days to keep rewriting the story.

And for the first time in her life, Selene Vargas was the author of her own destiny.
