The Baby Isn't Yours

Three weeks went by fairly quickly underneath grey overcast skies. Ava lingered quietly with Ethan upstairs. Zayn frantically messaged and surprisingly sent a lavish bouquet of flowers but she remained resolutely unresponsive. Rather her choice had been made already somehow quietly inside her. Fear of making another wrong choice lingered deeply within her. Her belly swelled rapidly underneath with gentle yet relentless pressure. Reality of that kid who flipped everything on its head was no longer some hush hush thing she could feign ignorance about. Something kicked rather violently. Twisting violently downwards rather suddenly. Life loomed ahead every night reminding her it was on its way whether ready or utterly unprepared she was. One night doctor's office phoned rather unexpectedly from downstairs.“Ms. Carter, we’d like to go over your recent genetic screenings. Ms. Carter they'd like to review recent genetic screenings with you very carefully now.“My... She frowned deeply.“The father of the child.”

Her breath caught. “No, he’s not. My voice trailed off awkwardly beneath swirling fog. She hesitated awkwardly. Her breath caught suddenly in her throat beneath anxious gaze of child 's ruggedly handsome taciturn father standing stark still nearby.“We may have misidentified the biological father based on the previous sample.”

“What?” Ava gripped the table.

“The DNA match from Mr. Zayn Carter doesn’t align with the baby’s genetics.”

She blinked, stunned. “That can’t be. Not really. Just spill it already.“Ma’am… I’m sorry, but the baby is not Zayn’s.”

Ava couldn’t breathe.

Something wrong lurked beneath eerily. Darkness hung palpably over everything. Words flooded her mind suddenly that she struggled to decipher. Biological father identification might've gone awry based on prior sample. Ava gripped table tightly and uttered a curt disbelieving what. Mr. Zayn Carter's DNA match starkly diverges from baby's genetics entirely. She blinked stunned. Not quite possibly so apparently. The item belongs utterly to him. He stood beside me eerily that night. The nurse hesitated again awkwardly. Ma'am I'm sorry but baby isn't Zayn's. Ava's breath caught awkwardly in her throat and darkness crept up. She sped recklessly through city streets eerily silent as a specter gripping wheel tightly with manic fingers. A single egregious blunder occurred quietly. A singularly calamitous evening shattered everything. Memories resurfaced like some ghastly specter she had desperately tried to inter in depths of mortifying ignominy and bitter regret.“Ava?”

She stared at him.

“You remember that night?” she whispered.

Darkness fell swiftly after Zayn abandoned her.“You said it was a mistake.”

Her voice broke. “I need to know… was it?”

Meanwhile, Ethan was in his study, drinking again, when Zayn walked in.

“You’re breaking into my home now?” Ethan said, cold.

“I want to see her.”

“You had your chance.”

Zayn walked forward. “She doesn’t love you.”

Ethan stood slowly. “But the baby is mine now. She got utterly blitzed that night. She sobbed uncontrollably beneath starry night skies.“You’re scared. Someone else was called by them pretty quickly afterwards. She vowed never again speaking of someone under oath fervently.“She ran to me. She rapped loudly on a creaky door hoping fervently that nobody would be home or respond in any way.“You don’t even care about the baby, do you?”

Ethan didn’t answer.

The door creaked loudly open very slowly in the darkness. Jason Carter stood shirtless in doorway looking utterly surprised being Ethan and Zayn's notoriously estranged cousin after all. She stared intently at him with an unblinking gaze. She whispered recall that night? Jason blinked sluggishly under harsh bright lights. Her voice cracked pretty badly and she said it was a blunder uttered earlier. Ethan sat in study drinking heavily when Zayn strolled in and I need know was it? Ethan said coldly you're breaking into my home now. Zayn walked forward slowly.

I want see her desperately now.

You had your chance already. Ethan stood slowly and a harsh truth echoed loudly in his mind: she doesn't love you. Baby belongs to me now anyway. Your turn had already transpired quite thoroughly by then obviously. Zayn's jaw clenched very tightly. You're utterly terrified somehow. You've somehow inexplicably remained that way pretty much forever apparently.“Where were you?”

She held the envelope behind her back. “Getting the truth.”

He tilted his head. “And what truth is that?”

She stepped forward. “The baby isn’t yours.”

Silence.

Ethan laughed with bitter undertones. You think fear motivates her actions?“It’s Zayn’s, then.”

She shook her head. “No.”

His face went still. “What?”

She pulled out the papers. “It’s Jason’s.”

The silence became a scream.

“You’re lying,” Ethan whispered. “That’s impossible.”

Ava dropped the paper on the table. “You wanted the truth. She sprinted furiously in my direction. Zayn stared intently at him with eyes narrowing slightly. You barely spare a thought for that tiny human do you? Ethan stayed silent. Deep down Ethan wanted Ava way more than he wanted that kid. Ava sat alone again in clinic. She clutched a brand new DNA result tightly in her hand. This fact was verified rather definitively by her very own lifeblood. She gazed downward at name with quiet introspection. Jason Carter was listed curiously as father.“You’re telling me I destroyed my brother… ruined your marriage… and it’s not even mine?”

Her voice cracked. “I didn’t know. Silently tears streamed down her pale cheeks beneath eyes red from crying.“I would’ve raised it. What exactly had she done terribly wrong apparently?“That’s what makes this hurt more.”

Zayn took a step back. “You don’t even know who you are anymore, Ava.”

She didn’t stop him when he walked away.

She pondered deeply now what exactly she might do instead somehow.
