I stood in front of the tall building, heart pounding like I had done something wrong. The glass door reflected my face- I look small, unsure, out of place.
ARI said "he's cold but kind in his way" I didn't know what that's mean, but I trust ARI.
Lucien
That was his name. Ari's friend. The one who owned this building.
I stepped inside, holding my breath.
The air smelled like coffee, paper and something expensive. People walked past me quickly, dressed in black and white, eye focused. I was dressed in ari's soft sweater and clean pants he left me still i felt i didn't belong here.
A lady at the font desk looked up "you're here for the interview with Mr. Lucien?"
I nodded. She pressed something on her phone "he's expecting you. Top floor"
I walked into the elevator alone. My hands wouldn't stop shaking.
The top floor was too quiet, too clean.
A man stood near the window, his back to me. Tall, straight shoulders, dark black hair falling perfectly into place.
He turned
And I froze his eyes-silver, cold, sharp like winter. He wore a black suit the kind looked expensive without trying. Everything about him was perfect. Too perfect.
He didn't speak right away. I lowered my eyes "I'm NOA"
"I know" he said. His voice was deep flat, calm but not warm "sit"
Lucien sat across from me, behind his big desk.
I tried to speak first "ARI said you were looking for someone to work?"
Lucien looked at me slowly"he said you were looking" he said. Calm but serious"that's not the same".
I looked down "I want to work. I want to earn something on my own".
He didn't answer right away. Just watched me for a second.
" What can you do?" he asked. I tried to think "I can clean, organize. I used to help in the market with my grandmother. Not only that, but I can read. Furthermore, I learn quickly. I listen".
Lucien didn't move.
"You don't have any certificate or any real experience". I shook my head "no I don't".
He looked at me again. "You don't sound like you're from here"
"I'm not " saId softly.
"where are you from?".
I lowered my eyes "…far…"
Lucien didn't ask more maybe he understood I didn't want to say or maybe he didn't care.
"i don't usually hire people i don't trust" he said" but ARI trust You. So I'll give you a chance".
"you'll start tomorrow" he said "on the lowest floor admin work. You follow the rules. Prove yourself if you do well., I'll keep you. If you don't I won't waste time".
I felt something tight inside me slowly relax." I will do my best" I said "thank you".
He didn't say anything to that. He opened the drawer and take out a small card with my name on it and ID badge. He slid it across the desk. When I reached for it, our fingers almost touched, but he pulled his hand right away, like i wasn't supposed to get too close.
I held the badge carefully "I won't let you down".
Lucien stared at me. I couldn't tell what he was thinking his face stayed calm, his eyes cold but something in the way he looked at me made my chest feel strange.
"You may go now" he said.
I stood up slowly and gave a small bow. Then I walk out of the room. I let out my breath i don't know I was holding.
Lucien was cold, distant, sharp
but he gave me a chance
and that
that was enough for now.
