Entering The Teen Zone

A HURRY TO GROW UP

when 16-year-old Matthew invited her to go along, 13-year-old Nina was flattered. she loved hanging out with older kids, and the chance to cruise around in a beat-up chevy was a thrill she couldn't turn down. Most of the time the car had three or four of Matthew's high school friends leaning out the windows. Usually the girls shouted crude remarks at bystandars as the old chevy spun out or cut corners too close.

This was nina's idea of fun-to get in with the grown-up crowd, to find a faster lane, to find some genuine exitement. On the weekends Matthew would usually find a party and the entire carload would invade that home or apartment. Inside there would be plenty of boys, a large supply of alcohol and sometimes marijuana.

The alcohol made her light-headed, loud, and goofy. The boys were close, pushy, and physical. Because the parties ended late, Nina usually got into trouble with her parents.

Fortunately Nina never got into any serious trouble. Except for hassles with her parents, the young teen didn't get really drunk, and she kept the boys under resonable control. But one late night, after an ugly confrontaion with her father, Nina sat alone in her room and thought it over.

Did she really want to move this fast? Did she want to make hard, tough choices this early in life? Did she even understand what was happening to her mind and body? She decided it wasn't really any fun playing in deep water if she had to always stand her toes to keep from drowning.

the next day Nina found Matthew at the drive-in and told her friend the truth.

"I really like you," Nina said. "you're a blast to be with. But the car and parties are too fast for me. I need to go back and hang out with my own age group. Hey, but I'll look for you when I stop in at the drive-in."

Nina decided to enjoy being young teenager for a few years before she became an older teenager.

"Be happy, young man, while you are young, and let your heart give you joy in the days of your youth."
