Chapter 5: Echoes Beneath the Frost
Juhi trembled in the passenger seat, her soaked clothes clinging to her like the weight of every secret she’d just uncovered. Her hand clenched around the flash drive until her knuckles turned white. Her ears rang—not from the alarms, but from that voice.
John.
Rayen hadn’t started the engine. His fingers hovered above the ignition like they were frozen in time.
“You knew,” she whispered, not trusting herself to speak louder. “Didn’t you?”
Rayen didn’t look at her. Just stared at the radio like it might say something different this time.
Nikesh groaned from the backseat. His skin had gone ashen. “Drive… now… or we all die.”
Rayen finally turned the key.
The truck roared to life, tires spinning as he tore away from the facility. The rearview mirror showed figures in black streaming from the hatch, too late. For now.
“Where are we going?” Juhi demanded.
Rayen’s voice was low. “Safehouse. Ten clicks northeast. Old forestry cabin. No drones above that zone.”
She turned to him. “Rayen, was that John? Was it him?”
He didn’t answer.
Nikesh coughed. “If that was John… then he’s in deeper than we thought. KARDIA wasn’t a prisoner. He was the plan.”
Juhi shook her head, memories crashing into her like broken waves.
John’s letters. The careful handwriting. The words that pulled her back from the edge when she was ready to disappear.
You’re more than they made you. We were made to break their systems.
Rayen slammed the brakes.
They had reached a narrow dirt path, half-swallowed by fog and pine trees. The safehouse.
A figure was already waiting at the door.
Small, cloaked, red scarf wound tightly around her face.
Rayen blinked. “What the hell—”
“It’s okay,” Nikesh rasped. “That’s Rhea. One of ours. Logistics.”
The girl moved fast, slipping beneath Nikesh’s arm and helping Juhi drag him inside.
The cabin was dim, powered by a backup generator. Inside was another man—broad, dark-eyed, tattoos up his throat. He didn’t speak, just nodded once and pointed to a steel table in the corner.
“Arden,” Rayen said. “Our field medic. He won’t talk unless someone’s dying.”
“Someone is,” Juhi snapped. “He was shot for me.”
Nikesh grinned weakly. “Romantic.”
She wanted to yell at him. Instead, she pressed a towel to his side while Arden unpacked surgical tools.
Across the room, Rhea pulled her scarf down, revealing a face not much older than Juhi’s, eyes sharp as scalpels.
“You pulled data from Site RZ-9?”
Juhi nodded, still trembling.
Rhea tapped on a dusty laptop. “Good. Because you need to see this.”
She inserted the flash drive into a protected port and ran a sequence.
Multiple windows opened—schematics, audio logs, dossiers.
And then—video.
A containment cell. White. Sealed.
And inside—John.
Older. Thinner. But him. His back to the camera.
A distorted voice echoed through the room:
> “You’re not a weapon, John. You’re the lighthouse. She’s the flame.”
He didn’t answer. But he raised his head. As if hearing something far away.
Juhi stepped closer to the screen, hand over her mouth.
Another voice entered the feed, deeper, amused.
> “We had to make sure she'd fight her way here. She needed pain. Needed to burn. And you… you were the spark.”
“Pause it,” Juhi said. “Go back.”
Rhea did.
Juhi leaned in.
There. In the reflection of the glass cell. A face.
Watching John.
Not just anyone.
Her manager.
Mr. Park.
The man who’d signed her first contract. The one who said “We’re family here.”
Her knees buckled. Rayen caught her.
“Juhi,” he said quietly. “You weren’t recruited. You were engineered.”
“No,” she whispered. “No—”
Rhea was already typing again.
“There’s more,” she said. “Encrypted layers. Stuff I couldn’t see at first glance.”
The screen glitched.
Then—

Nikesh coughed behind them. “What the hell does that mean?”
Rayen looked at Juhi, then the screen.
“It means John wasn’t the only one created for this.”
Everyone turned to her.
Juhi backed away from the screen, voice cracking.
“I’m Subject 02.”
And outside, in the freezing forest, something moved. Something that had followed them.
Something waiting.
