The sound of the phone ringing cut through the steady patter of rain on the windshield .

A blond man sat behind the steering wheel of his parked rented car , his hand hovering over the vibrating device beside him .

With a sigh , he finally picked it up .

" Dean , where the hell are you ? " a voice came filled with both worry and restrained fury .

The caller didn't wait for a response " you went there , didn't you ?

I told you i'd investigate what happened ــــ why are you there already ?

you've got a shoot next week !

what am i supposed to tell the staff ? "

Dean remained silent , his blue eyes gaze fixed on the rain streaking down the glass . The voice on the other end dropped to a frustrated mutter : " you son of a bـــ"

Dean let out a long sigh . He heard it loud and clear .

He knew he was in the wrong for not telling anyone where he was going , but Ezra's nagging always grated on his nerves .

" Don't worry , Ezra !" he said flatly .

It was the only response that came to mind , and predictably , it did nothing to ease his assistant's frustration .

Before Ezra could speak again , Dean cut him off .

" I'll call you later , okay ? "

He ended the call before Ezra had a chance to argue , tossing the phone back onto the passenger seat .

He turned his head to stare out the window once more , his expression shadowed by something deeper than the weather .

Sadness lingered in his eyes . The downpour outside only seemed to echo the heaviness in his chest .

Then a sudden noise broke through the rhythm of the rain ـــ a sharp , hollow thud .

Dean frowned and scanned the street through the fogged-up glass . His eyes caught sight of a figure collapsed on the sidewalk . A girl !

She looked hurt .

Without thinking , he grabbed the umbrella from the back seat and jumped out into the rain . Water soaked his shoulders in seconds , but he didn't care .

He approached the girl cautiously and knelt in front of her .

" Are you okay ? Can you get up ? "

The girl slowly lifted her head , her eyes blinking against the rain . She didn't speak , but her slight nod was enough to tell him she wasn't seriously injured .

Dean reached out to help her ـــ but just as his hand moved toward hers , a sharp click cut through the air behind him .

The unmistakable sound of a gun being cocked .

A low , hostile voice followed ..

" step away from her , you damn bastard !"
