Hey! This is my first time writing a novel and English is not my first language,, so please correct me if I'm wrong and tell me if I can improve in anything. thanks for reading!!
" CHAPTER 1"
On a gloomy sunday evening in the town of carleone, the rain could be heard pouring down.... it was in fact since this morning. This was nothing new for the people of carleone because even on bright summer days the town looked like all joy had been sucked out of it. It was full of old folks and barely any young people could be seen in it.... children? out of question!
Michelle, a young woman in her 20s also hated the town when she first came here. But now,.....to her it feels like home.... maybe because she got used to seeing the faces of the same people everyday in this small town this much that going anywhere else in between complete strangers makes her extremely nervous. Now michelle can be often seen in the streets of carleone, in any cafe, bars or restaurants singing songs from all her heart and playing her violin for people.
When She first came to this town, she used to sing songs for her sick grandma this exact way in the hospital where all other patients loved her voice and would praise her for it. At that time 15 year old Michelle who was naturally shy started to open up to the people of the town and gradually fell in love with it. After years of being ignored she felt noticed for the first time and she was loving it and still loves the way the people of this town don't let her go unnoticed.
For Michelle this was like any other evening, at exactly 5 p.m she sat down in one of the small restaurants in the town and took out her violin and started to sing. 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
Like honey poured her melodious voice out of her mouth. People kept listening while often giving her compliments in between. She didn't let her flow break. The Evening carried on as normal, she took requests from people and sang those songs for them, sometimes others would join her and sing along. While taking requests from a guest, from a corner of her eye she saw people gathering on the street but brushed it off thinking they had gathered
to listen to her singing....."nothing new! Right?" she thought.
She carried on singing and playing her violin while still opening her eyes occasionally to check outside in the street. The atmosphere in the street kept getting tense. Michelle looked around andl noticed that the people inside the restaurant also started to get a hint as the compliments stopped but no one was sure about it, still she kept singing making an effort to lighten the mood.
Everyone's eyes were fixated on the glass window, curious to find out what was coming next when a young boy probably in his mid 20s stood up breaking the awkward atmosphere. He stormed to the door and then outside shouting at the crowd making a way for himself to see what was happening, only to see a man holding a radio in his hand sitting on the footpath with a cigar pressed between his lips and a hat in his hands.
Everyone started to get up from their chairs and walked outside to hear what was so special being broadcast on the radio. In just a few minutes the restaurant once packed with people was now empty with just a few people sitting inside.
"foolish people" said loudly the old lady who owned the place.
Michelle giggled and said; "Are you mad because they went out without paying?"
"Yes! I-I meant to say NO!! but bcuz' they left the food half eaten!, the place is almost empty you should get going now"- the old lady replied while handing Michelle packed food.
" yeah! I think so....the sun will also go down soon" - Michelle replied while packing her things.
she packed her things and walked out of the place, where in the street she saw the crowd still standing around the man with radio. she was curious to find out and tried to peak on tiptoe but got nothing good out of it. she started walking forward while blaming her genetics for her short height, when sudden realisation that the sun is gonna set soon hit her and her old grandma's face started to flash across her eyes. She ran home like an Olympic sprinter, stopping in between to catch her breath. running, falling, panting she somehow reached her apartment thinking of all possible bad things that could happen to her upon reaching home, --- Only to find her grandma glued to the radio, her ears as pointed as of an rabbit, her eyes showing no possible emotions at that time.
Michelle put her things down before loudly asking
"Are you alive?!"
the old lady turned her head, her expressions changing and her eyebrows frowning - "I should be the one asking this! I would've probably declared you missing if you were more than a minute late"
"whatever!"- michelle said while rolling her eyes
"By the way why is everyone glued to the damn radio today" she asked.
"You haven't heard that? have you? the mainland got attacked by another country today" grandma replied.
"why do you worry then? carleone is an island... such a gloomy one, no one will think of attacking us" michelle asked.
"I'm not worried about that, what makes me worried is that the government has announced for one person per family to serve in the military until the war ends" - she said with great sorrow in her eyes.
