**Chapter 4**
A heavy sense of finality washed over me.
“Who exactly are you? Where’s Hazel?” William’s voice was icy, a stark contrast to the warm man I once knew.
Hannah, trying her best to maintain her calm, couldn’t hide the quiver in her voice. “Honey, what are you talking about? I don’t understand.”
“It’s me! Who else would I be?” she insisted, her confidence wavering. “That’s impossible! I remember you had a birthmark on your shoulder! Where is it?!” William's tone was sharp, cutting through the air like a knife.
“Right here,” he said, reaching for Hannah’s shirt. “You had a birthmark right here!”
Hannah quickly batted his hand away. “You’re mistaken! I’ve never had a birthmark there.”
“Stop this! Don’t you have something important to deal with? I’ll get out of your way!” With that, Hannah hastened her steps, eager to escape the tension.
In that moment, doubt flickered in my mind. Maybe I had remembered wrong.
Eleanor appeared next, strolling over to William’s side. After calling his name twice without a response, she nudged him gently.
William blinked, emerging from his daze, his expression vacant. “Sorry, what did you say?”
Eleanor leaned in closer, draping herself over him. “I said, now that the condoms are here, shouldn’t we get started?” She attempted to coax him onto the bed, but he remained unmoved.
“I'm not feeling well today. Let’s skip it,” he replied, and it was clear to anyone watching that his excuse was as thin as air.
Eleanor didn’t argue, though a shadow of disappointment flickered in her eyes as she nodded in agreement.
Meanwhile, my spirit felt tethered, drawn to Hannah’s side. The next afternoon, she returned home, her phone ringing with an ominous call from a debt collector.
“Hannah, when the hell are you going to pay up? Keep stalling, and I’ll send someone to chop off your hands!” The voice on the other end grew louder, and all Hannah could do was submit.
“Soon, please. Just give me one more week. I swear I’m telling the truth this time!” The man snorted dismissively. “Fine, since you borrowed quite a bit, I’ll give you one week.”
After he hung up, relief washed over Hannah. She pulled out the divorce papers she had prepared, a tangible sign of her resolve.
William had built a successful design company after graduation, and if Hannah divorced him, the settlement would cover most of her debts. All she needed was for him to sign those papers quickly.
With determination, she sent the divorce documents to William, her heart racing with excitement. She was certain that he would jump at the chance to end their marriage, given how much he despised me.
Even I believed that to be true. But as the days passed, it became painfully clear: both Hannah and I were mistaken. She waited, but William never signed the divorce papers.
