In the wedding dress shop, Mag stood before the mirror, wearing a stunning white dress that cascaded softly around her body.
However, the beauty of the dress was overshadowed by the visible burn scar on her shoulder, a permanent mark from the fire in which she saved Adam. The saleswoman, noticing the tension in the air, suggested with a hesitant tone:
"Miss Mogane, perhaps you should try another one?"
It was the fifth dress she had tried on, and each seemed unable to hide the scar that told a painful story.
Adam was there, watching her with a flash of guilt in his eyes. He was on a call, but now his gaze was fixed on the scar he knew so well.
After a few gestures, he hung up the phone and approached.
Trying to touch the scar as he had so often before, Mag silently moved away from his hand. Adam's hand froze in the air, and he looked at her with confusion. Mag signed evasively:
"There are many people"
For a moment, Adam hesitated, but soon pulled her hand forcefully and kissed the tips of her fingers. With a look full of sincerity, he signed:
"Are you not happy? It's okay. Mag, you will always be the most beautiful in my heart."
In that moment, it was as if she was seeing the eighteen-year-old Adam again, full of hope and love.
But she quickly recovered from the nostalgia. Their relationship was like that dress: either the style was too ugly or it simply couldn't cover the scars they both carried.
And more importantly, it was already tainted.
Mag lightly pulled her hand away from Adam, responding with a shy smile, before turning to change dresses.
As she bid farewell to the white fabric, the sound of Adam's phone echoed from outside the fitting room. It was Catherine, her voice soft and distressed, informing him that her period had arrived and the pain was so intense that she felt like she was dying.
Adam immediately responded, his tone worried and comforting. Mag, realizing the situation, quickly put on her own clothes.
In the next second, Adam ignored the sales assistant's objections and opened the fitting room door with frustration.
"Mag, did you die in there? Why are you so slow?" Impatience was evident in his voice, and he was still holding the voice message button.
But, upon returning Catherine's call, his tone suddenly changed to a soft murmur:
"Don't worry, I'll be there right now and keep you company."
Mag stared at him, and for an instant he seemed to feel a pang of guilt for his impetuous attitude. The atmosphere in the air was heavy, and the sales assistant, noticing the tension, laughed nervously and tried to intervene:
"You're about to get married; you could be a little gentler with your tone, right?"
Adam scoffed at the suggestion, replying:
"She's just a deaf person; do I really need to care about the tone when I talk to her?" His words were not just a defense; they also seemed to reflect his own need for comfort.
The small guilt that had shone in his eyes immediately disappeared.
He didn't care because she stopped trying on the wedding dress.
In the next second, after sending the voice message, he coldly looked at Mag and signaled that something urgent had come up at work and he had to leave immediately.
Saying this, he turned and left without looking back.
Catherine's flirtatious voice still seemed to echo in the store.
The sales assistant had witnessed a special love triangle.
She looked at Mag with sympathy.
Mag handed her the wedding dress, and she asked:
"Would you like to reschedule and come back another day to try on dresses?"
Then she realized that Mag couldn't hear and was about to find paper and pen to communicate with Mag, who smiled at her.
"No need, you can keep the deposit, I won't be back."
"You can hear? So still a little..."
Under her surprised gaze, Mag turned off the recording button from her pocket, and gave her a slight smile and left.
In the following days, Adam did not return home.
He only appeared occasionally on Catherine's social media posts.
She accidentally found his other phone.
The content inside made her previously calm heart freeze as the two were involved in their passionate affair; she had already obtained her visa and started packing her things at home.
They had been together for ten years.
There were many shared memories.
He once saved his allowance for six months to buy the best camera, always begging and persuading her to take pictures.
He said that every day they spent together was precious and deserved to be recorded.
But since Catherine returned; even when she wanted to take a family photo with him on New Year's, he called her childish and pushed her hand away, albeit with disgust.
However, when Mag looked at Catherine's social media, she found photos of them together, posted shamelessly.
The image hit her like a punch to the stomach; she used to be deaf and blind to these obvious provocations.
Feeling invaded by a wave of emotions, she gathered thousands of her old photos and decided to burn them to ashes. The light from the fire reflected on her face, reminding her of the day her parents passed away, bringing up memories she preferred to forget.
With only eight days before the wedding, Adam finally returned. He looked exhausted, and as he opened the door, he frowned upon seeing Mag.
"Why does the house look so empty?" he signed, but she did not respond.
At that moment, he didn't bother to think about such trivial matters; his mind was occupied with other things.
Instead, a smile formed on his face as he signed:
"Did you choose your wedding dress?"
When he saw Mag nod in confirmation, his eyes lit up with satisfaction: "Great."
He then turned and went to the bathroom to freshen up.
Mag noticed the running shoe box he had left at the entrance. Curious, she opened the box to take a look, feeling a mixture of expectation and anxiety.
