Van Gaze: Emma

“I’m going now, see you later Emma” Emma waves her hand as she watches Edward slowly fading away. Emma goes back in and closes the door.

“Living in this small house just 2 of us is not bad at all, beside it’s quite far from other people’s occupancy. Mom, Dad, it’s been 2 years since the time Edward lost his ability to walk, now he can walk normally again, he helped me with the work, can you see his happy face this morning?”

Emma’s looking outside the windows, starring at the sky where the sun glare comes through the glass and shines Emma’s brown eyes.

“Oh? This little lamb, he forgot his lunch” Emma picks up Edward’s lunch and put it in her hand bag, “better give it to him”.

8 O’clock, Emma’s going out from the house and locked up the door, she decided to bring Edward his lunch first before going to the Poppy’s Daycare. Emma’s looking at the tall building with a blue light that shining way up to the outer space, “I wonder what it will be in the future”.

Around 15 minutes later, Emma arrived at the pizza shop where Edward’s working.

“Welcome, may I take your order?” said one of the employee at the recipient table. She’s looking at every corner of the place but can’t find Edward anywhere, “Excuse me but, I’m here to give my litt- ahem, Ed, his lunch but it appears that I couldn’t find him anywhere”.

The employee is a bit confused at first but then recognize her as Ed’s sister, “Ohh, you can trust it with us, I’ll inform Ed later” he serves Emma with sunny smile on his face “ah is that so? Thank you, that would be really helpful” as she excuses herself.

“Okay, 30 minutes is more than enough to the Poppy” Emma continues her walk to the Daycare.

“I was ‘bout to say it earlier, lucky me still be able to hold it back in, he would be embarrassed if he hear that his sister was delivering his lunch” Emma’s talking about the time she gave Edward’s lunch to herself as she let out a sigh.

“I wonder what I will cook for Ed tonight, maybe some dumplings?” said Emma while looking at the bird chirping on top of a balcony of a building. “It’s been a long time since that incident, thinking back to it now seems like nothing really happened, after the doctor said that Ed won’t be able to walk again, it breaks my heart just remembering it, but looking at him enjoying everything he do now, is more than enough to fix it” she said that as she start walking in more slow pace.

Emma is not paying attention on the road and bump herself with a crying little kid that happen to be lost from her companion.

Emma slowly talks with the kid, “Hello little girl, why are you crying? Are you alone?” but the little girl keeps crying. Emma reaches inside her hand bag and pulls out a rabbit shaped candy and hands it to the little girl and she stop crying while looking at Emma in the eyes.

Emma start remembering things the time she saw the little girl’s eyes, how she stop crying after she gave her a candy, just like a 3 year old Edward when he can barely speak, but understand the good things that he wanted “If mom didn’t meet dad back then, I wonder what will his future be, such a way to put us together like now, he probably don’t remember” thought Emma as she gives a little smile to the little girl.

“So little girl, are you lost? Where’s your companion?” ask Emma to the little girl.

“I don’t know… I was following a grasshopper and when I realized, I’ve got separated from mama” the little girl sobs with the candy in her hand, about time she begin to cry again.

“It’s okay little girl, we’re going to find your mom, did you two got separated just now? Ask Emma.

The little girl replied with nods.

“Then she must be close, nothing to worry about, we’ll find her, I promise” Emma gave a sweet smile to the little girl.

They’re walking together for almost 10 minutes with the little’s girl hand clenching on Emma’s forefinger.

“You’re not eating that?” ask Emma to the little girl.

Little girl shakes her head.

“Why?” Emma continues.

“it’s too cute, I can’t eat it” the innocent little girl answered.

“Oh? Do you want a wolf shaped one then?”.

Little girl shakes her head again.

After a minute of silent Emma tries to talk with her again, “I’m Emma, Who’s your name little girl?” Emma turns her looks over the little girl.

“My name’s Dorothy” timidly said by the little girl.

“You have such a cute name Dorothy, in the past, Dorothy means ‘gift from a god’ so your parents must be proud of you” as she held the little girl’s hand.

“Thank you Emma, your name is also beautiful, I wonder what is it means” the little girl looking up at Emma’s eyes as she continue walking.

“You want to know? you’re quite curious for your age you know that” Emma teases the little girl.

“Ah, so I’m not allowed to know” the little girl stares at her reflection on the puddle on the side of the sidewalk.

“No sweetheart, I’m just saying that you’re quite curious, doesn’t mean you’re not allowed to know” Emma goes down at the level of Dorothy’s height and pinches the het cheek.

“Emma… I don’t know what my mom was thinking when she gave me this name, but Emma has the meaning of ‘whole’” said Emma.

“Whole? I don’t understand” ask the little girl.

“It means everything” said Emma to the curious little girl while looking straight forward as they continue walking.

The little girl looks up at Emma and she’s amazed by the time the breeze blows on Emma’s silky long hair and at the same time, the sunlight gives a clear view of Emma’s face, her pale cheery lips, brown eyes, and a little bit of natural blush on her cheeks.

“You’re so pretty-“ said the little girl inadvertently.

“Dorothy!” a motherly voice calling the little girl’s name.

“Mama!” the little girl runs toward her mom as she releases Emma’s hand and jumps on her hug. She then tells her mom what’s happened.

Dorothy’s mom coming towards Emma, “Please take this as a thank you from me, thank you, thank you so much” she gave Emma a box full of chocolates which Dorothy’s mom happens to have it with her, Emma a bit hesitant to accept the gift because she thinks that she didn’t do that much of a help.

“Ahh I don’t want to burden you, please have it for you and your daughter”, “No it’s fine you deserve this, we got more left at home” said the mother as she insists of handing the chocolates box to Emma, “Ahh, thank you so much then” Emma thanks her with a sweet smile as she takes the chocolate box.

“Ah I really need to go now, excuse me ma’am” Emma pats Dorothy’s head and excuse herself “Take care Dorothy, don’t get separated from your mama again”.

“bye bye Emma!” her mother surprised when her daughter said Emma.

Emma waves her hand to Dorothy and walks to the opposite way, going to her work place.

“Isn’t she beautiful mama? Will I be like her one day?” said the little girl to her mother.

“Now now Dorothy, let’s go back home, don’t get lost again”.

As they walk back home.

“Yes Dorothy, she has the beauty, both her appearance and her heart”

“She’s Beautiful”.
