Chapter 4

While the four of them were eating, a voice broke the silence.

Midwife Li, wearing a gray-blue apron, walked to the door and called out, “Mr. Lin! I’m Midwife Li, I brought the goat milk you asked for!”

Hearing her voice, Mr. Lin got up personally to welcome her in.

“Midwife Li, have you eaten? If not, and you don’t mind, come sit and eat something.”

Everyone at the table stood up when they realized who had arrived, except for Avi, who was in the crib nearby.

Midwife Li placed the goat milk down and glanced at the food on the table.

Braised perch, steamed pork ribs, cold beef slices, and braised eggplant. How could anyone say no to that?

She really wanted to eat but politely declined.

“No need, no need, my husband is waiting for me at home. You go ahead and eat. I’ll bring more goat milk tomorrow.”

Hearing this, Aria responded habitually, just like in her past life.

“Then hurry on home, Midwife Li. It's getting dark and the road is hard to walk.”

She said this softly into Aria’s ear.

Aria felt satisfied hearing that. Ten coins were worth it if it meant her son would be well-fed.

Just then, Aria’s left hand was gently tugged. When she turned to look, it was her blind husband, Liam.

Seeing the couple being affectionate, Midwife Li smiled and took her leave.

After she was gone, Aria asked, “What’s wrong?”

“Where’s the midwife? I wanted to ask her about how to help your milk come in.”

Aria’s face instantly turned red. “Why are you asking that? Just eat better and it’ll come. Didn’t Father buy a lot of meat today?”

Liam knew she must be blushing. Since he couldn’t see anything around him, he didn’t want to step out of line.

So he quietly let Aria lead him back to the dining table. Once they were seated, Mr. Lin and Nick started picking food for them again.

“Aria, in a few days I’m going to the capital to take the exam. Father might not be able to take care of all three of you while I’m gone. He and I just talked about hiring a maid and a servant from the county so you’ll be better taken care of.”

Nick’s words left both Aria and Liam stunned for a moment. Liam nodded. “That’s true. We should get two helpers.”

But he was struggling financially. He could barely support himself, let alone hire servants.

Mr. Lin seemed to understand what Liam was thinking. He picked up a piece of meat and placed it into Aria’s bowl.

“If we have two servants, I can relax a little too. Don’t worry about the money.”

His grandfather’s family business used to be one of the best in Qingyun County. But his mother died early, and his father took in many concubines. When they divided the inheritance, a lot was taken away.

What was left to him was just this two-section courtyard and about a hundred silver coins.

He hadn’t touched that money all these years, so he still had some savings.

Now that his daughter was living a hard life, he felt it was only right to help. Besides, his son had no objections.

That money was meant for his children anyway. He was just giving it to them earlier than planned.

“Father, you decide. We’ll be troubling you this month.”

Aria got up to bow, but Mr. Lin stopped her with one hand.

“No need to be so formal with your father. You’ll always be my daughter. At home, you don’t have to be polite.”

Liam could only nod. As a grown man relying on his wife’s family to live, most men would feel embarrassed.

But he wasn’t like most men. As long as it helped his wife, he’d do anything, even give up his life, just to make sure she had a good postpartum recovery.

The next morning.

Mr. Lin had already taken his books and gone to the academy, leaving behind Nick, who had just finished breakfast and was now reviewing his lessons outside.

Early in the morning, Aria heard magpies chirping and felt in a great mood.

She got up and saw her beautiful husband holding their soft and adorable son. Outside the window, her younger brother was studying under the tree. In the living room, a table full of her favorite dishes awaited.

She felt like she had been sent here to enjoy life. It was so wonderful.

Aria stretched lazily, but her arm pulled against her chest, causing a sharp pain. She looked down.

It turned out that her son’s supply of milk had come in early. Thinking about feeding the baby like this made her feel embarrassed.

But she couldn’t ignore it. Just letting it leak was worse.

It was better to feed him. With that thought, she closed the window and pushed her husband out of the room.

Then she picked up the baby that Liam had left in the crib.

“Avi, be good. Mommy is going to feed you now.”

She imitated how her older cousin used to do it and began feeding the baby. Her whole face turned red from embarrassment.

She didn’t know how much time passed before Avi fell asleep. Only then did she remember she hadn’t washed up yet.

In ancient times, women had to wash their faces before they could go out, right?

Outside, Liam softly called, “Aria, how are you? I fetched some water for you to wash your face.”

When Aria opened the door and saw the small amount of water in the wooden basin, it wasn’t even enough to cover her hands.

But since he was blind, spilling too much water would’ve been a problem.

So she smiled and said, “Thank you, husband.”

“Wash your face first. I’ll bring in your breakfast. Try not to go outside. If anything happens, just tell me. Midwife Li said women can’t go out or be exposed to wind after giving birth.”

After hearing Liam’s words, Aria had no choice but to listen. After all, in her previous life, she died from poor health.

Now, she just wanted to take care of her body and avoid getting sick.

Thinking about how she went out in the rain yesterday and even went to greet Midwife Li, she felt like slapping herself.

“Alright. I’ll listen to you. Whatever you say, I’ll do.”

After breakfast, Nick held a book under one arm, with a large basket on his back. He called into the house, “Sis, Liam, I’m going out to chop some firewood. I’ll be back at noon to cook lunch. You two don’t need to do anything. Be careful not to hurt yourselves.”

Aria was very satisfied with her younger brother. She liked him a lot.

He had a soft, puppy-like appearance, but his personality was more like a wolf.

He was quick, efficient, could handle both kitchen and housework, was smart and skilled, and even knew martial arts. Who wouldn’t like him?

“Alright. Be careful. The mountain path is slippery.”

“Sis, I’m just going to the woods behind our house to chop a bit of wood. It’s not far. Don’t worry. I’ll be back soon. Liam, take care of Sis.”

Liam came out of the room with the baby strapped to his chest. He held onto the redwood post with both hands and said, “Okay. Go and come back safely.”

“Okay!”

The baby carrier Liam was wearing had been made by Aria herself. A blind man had to rely on touch. If he dropped the baby while carrying him, she would lose her mind.

Aria sat down and began to slowly recognize the ancient characters in her mind.

“Aria, you must be tired. I made you a pot of tea. Would you like some?”

Liam said sadly, “Aria, you weren’t like this before.”

“You used to cling to me all the time. But now you don’t care about me at all.”

Only then did Aria look up at the man with the baby strapped to his chest in a red cloth.
