Olivia’s heart raced as she stood frozen in Lucas’s office. His gaze was sharp, assessing her every movement, every breath.
“I know you’re hiding something, Olivia,” Lucas said, his voice calm but his eyes intense. “I want answers. Now.”
Her breath caught in her throat. How much did he know? Was he close to discovering her secret?
“I don’t know what you mean,” Olivia said, forcing her voice to stay steady. Her palms were sweating, and she clenched them into fists to steady herself.
Lucas took a slow step forward, closing the distance between them. His presence was overwhelming. “Don’t lie to me,” he said quietly. “I’ve been watching you. The way you behave around Ethan. The way you keep your distance. You’re not who you say you are.”
Every word felt like a punch to Olivia’s chest. She had to stay calm. She couldn’t let him see how close he was to the truth. “I’m not hiding anything,” she said, her voice a little shakier than she’d intended.
Lucas raised an eyebrow. “You’re good at hiding things. But I don’t like being kept in the dark.”
Before Olivia could respond, the door swung open, and Ethan stepped into the room. His eyes flickered between the two of them, sensing the tension in the air.
“Everything alright?” Ethan asked, his voice cautious but concerned.
Lucas’s gaze shifted to Ethan, but he didn’t back down. “Everything’s fine,” he said coldly.
Ethan didn’t seem convinced. “It doesn’t look fine. What’s going on?”
Olivia’s chest tightened. She couldn’t lie to Ethan, not now. But Lucas had made it clear—she couldn’t afford anyone to know the truth.
“We were just talking,” Olivia said quickly, forcing a smile she didn’t feel. “Nothing serious.”
Ethan looked at her, then back at Lucas. “Talking?” He eyed Lucas with suspicion. “Or interrogating?”
The tension in the room thickened, and Olivia’s nerves were on edge. She knew she had to act fast, but everything felt out of control.
Lucas turned his cold gaze back to Olivia. “I’m not going to let this go, Olivia. Whatever you’re hiding, I’ll find out. I don’t like secrets.”
The words struck her like a blow. Olivia’s mind raced. What was she going to do? Her secret—her entire life—was unravelling before her eyes.
Ethan’s eyes softened as he turned to Olivia, concern written all over his face. “Olivia, what’s going on?”
But Olivia couldn’t speak. The weight of Lucas’s words hung in the air, suffocating her.
For a long moment, neither of them spoke. Olivia could feel her pulse in her throat, her thoughts a jumbled mess. What would happen if Lucas found out? What would Ethan think of her when the truth came out?
Finally, Lucas broke the silence, his voice softer this time. “I just want to know who you really are, Olivia.”
The question hit her like a tidal wave. Who was she, really?
The walls she’d built around her were crumbling, and Olivia had no idea how to stop it.
