Aftermath 2

They’re trying to figure out how to move forward, how to clean this up without bringing more heat. And honestly, the one they’re most worried about is her. She’s the one who could get into trouble. Jail time, maybe worse.

She looks fragile, like she couldn’t handle it. The only reason she made it out alive was because she had a weapon.

But they’re wrong.

She’s wanted in four states. No one’s ever seen her face. They don’t even know who they’re looking for. That’s how good she is. Smart, quiet, always thinking. There’s so much going on in her head, it’s kind of scary.

And yeah, I know what she’s done. I know what she’s capable of.

But I can’t lie… I admire it.

Even if it should terrify me. I look towards her again. This time, I’m calculating her. I watch the way she shifts when they mention jail, like the very idea of it irritates her. I see it—her twitch. Barely there, but enough. She’s agitated. I turn to my siblings.

“Don’t agitate her. You might be next.”

She snaps her head toward me, sharply. Her eyes ran over me, slow and measured, like she was surprised I was able to read her. She squints slightly, then turns her head to my siblings with a cold, dead stare.

“Who knows,” she says.

It’s the first time she’s spoken. Her voice—husky, but still feminine—cuts through the room like a knife. I’m not attracted to her romantically. That’s not what this is.

But there’s something about her. The way she holds herself. The quiet power in her presence. It’s... attractive.

I fear for the man who falls for her.

And I fear even more for the man who thinks he can control her.

He read me.

He was able to read me.

Did I crack? How long was he watching me to see the twitch in my eye?

I didn’t even feel the twitch.

Hearing him say that I was agitated, to his siblings, shocked me.

Yes, I was agitated. But he knew.

He was able to read me.

What the fuck.

Of course he read me. He’s been watching me.

He studied me—almost in a creepy way—but I do the same thing.

I mean… I’ve killed over 50 people for him.

Romantically? Oh, absolutely not. I couldn’t even imagine being with someone so rigid.

But do I understand him?

Yes. Of course, I understand him.

He’s so complex.

But he’s just someone I want to get to know more.

Partner in crime. Maybe picture it; a Lonely, silent, calculated young-looking girl in her early twenties and a rigid, outspoken, spontaneous man.

Like Bonnie and Clyde.

Except they don’t die.

That’s what we could be.

One issue—we never talk.

It’s been two hours. Two damn hours. That meeting was dragging on. How does Kai do it? How does he just keep killing people and walking out like it’s nothing? I swear, I was about to nod off.

But then, something happened. My eyes twitched. Just a small thing, but enough to snap me out of it. Still can’t believe it worked.

I could feel him moving closer. Kai. Always watching. Always getting too close.

Finally, I turned to him. “You gotta stop creeping up on me like that.”

He smirks, looking at me with that usual intensity. “If I knew you had a sharp tongue, I wouldn't have come over.”

I roll my eyes. “Hurry up. I’ve got stuff to do.”

He steps in front of me, not backing off. “How many people have you killed?”

I stop, raising an eyebrow. My eyes narrow as I look him over. “Why’s that any of your business?”

He laughs under his breath, leaning in slightly. “Well, I could tell you how many I’ve killed, but we’d be here all night.”

I shrug, not really fazed. “Fifty. I’ve got fifty. And I haven’t gotten caught. Some might say I’m a pro at this.”

His eyes widen a bit, but he hides it quickly. “Fifty?” he repeats, and the voice is a little higher than usual. Still sounds like him, though.

“Yeah,” I say casually, “and no one’s figured it out yet. Guess I’m good at keeping it clean.”

He studies me, clearly trying to figure me out. “Huh. You’re not what I expected.”

I smirk. “Yeah, well, you’ve been annoying, but also kinda interesting.”

He gives a small laugh and starts walking away. “You’re never gonna get a husband with that attitude, you know?”

I watch him go, amused. “Who says I want a husband?” I called after him. “They’re all gonna die by my hands anyway.”

I hear him laugh again, quietly and knowing. It’s unsettling, but I don’t care. I turn and walk away, my smile still hanging on my lips.
