Scene 1: Tuesday Morning – Assembly

📍Location: Science Auditorium Grounds

🕘Time: 7:45 AM

David wakes up early, brushes, showers, and dresses in a simple T-shirt and jeans (no dress code for science students).

As he steps out of the hostel:

Yusuf:

"David wait na, make we waka go together!"

Ikenna (half-asleep):

"You people should snap note for me abeg!"

Tobi (shouting from bunk):

"Make dem teach you inside dream!"

David and Yusuf walk down to assembly ground with other Year 1 students. A lecturer climbs the podium.

Dean (with mic):

"You all must learn time management. This is university. No one will follow you up like secondary school. Always check your timetable. No excuses!"

After announcements and brief words from staff, assembly ends at 8:30 AM.

Scene 2: David Checks Timetable

📘 Course Today: CHM 101 – General Chemistry

🕘 Time: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM

📍 Venue: Lecture Theatre 2

He walks to the hall, which is huge and shaped like a cinema. About 300 students already seated.

He finds a seat beside Bimpe and Chuka.

Bimpe (smiling):

"Doctor David, you’re early today."

David (laughing):

"Na Chemistry o, I no wan carry over."

Chuka (chewing gum):

*"I heard this lecturer dey throw chalk if you mess up."

Scene 3: The CHM 101 Lecturer Enters

⏰Time: 9:10 AM

👨‍🏫 Lecturer: Dr. Mrs. Afolabi – Strict, intelligent, and always punctual.

She walks in wearing a lab coat, glasses, and holding a stack of notes.

Dr. Afolabi (without greeting):

"Close your mouths and open your books. This is not a secondary school classroom. I don’t entertain latecomers or noise-makers."

Everyone sits up sharply.

CHM 101 – First Lecture Topics:

Definition of Chemistry

Branches of Chemistry

Basic Concepts: Element, Compound, Mixture

Laws of Chemistry: Law of Conservation of Mass, Law of Constant Proportion

Sample Notes (David Writes):

Chemistry: The study of matter, its composition, properties, and reactions.

Branches: Organic, Inorganic, Physical, Analytical, Biochemistry.

Law of Conservation of Mass: Mass is neither created nor destroyed during a chemical reaction.

Dr. Afolabi’s Question:

"You, in the back row — what’s the difference between an element and a compound?"

Silence…

Dr. Afolabi (points at Yusuf):

"You, answer!"

Yusuf (panicking):

"Uh… element is like… the small thing... before compound...?"

Whole class chuckles quietly.

Dr. Afolabi:

"This is not a comedy club, Mr. Joker. If you don’t read, you will fail. Take note!"

Scene 4: After Class

📍Outside Lecture Theatre 2

David (laughing with Bimpe):

"Yusuf don disgrace himself today."

Yusuf (joining them):

"Omo that woman go kill person with eyes. See as she stare me like I stole chemistry!"

Chuka:

"Wait till she starts practicals. I heard she doesn't mark with mercy."

Scene 5: Back in the Hostel

David updates his timetable, rewrites his notes neatly, and underlines key points.

He’s starting to understand that uni life = no jokes.

He kneels by his bed and prays:

English:

"God, help me understand chemistry. Let me never disgrace my family in Jesus name."

Yoruba:

"Oluwa, jọwọ fi ọgbọn rẹ ran mi lọwọ. Má jẹ kí n bajẹ l’agbára Jesu. Amin."

Closing Scene:

David looks out the window at the campus night lights. Students are moving up and down, gisting, some rushing to the library.

He smiles and whispers:

"This is only the beginning."
