The Man Behind The Door

Episode 2 – “The Man Behind the Door”

The building was colder than she expected.

Wolfe International towered over the city like it owned the skyline, black glass and steel slicing into the clouds, too polished, too quiet. Kira adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and pulled her jacket tighter. Her heels clicked against marble, but her heartbeat was louder.

She hadn’t planned this. She wasn’t stalking him. Hell, she didn’t even know his name.

But now that she was here… it felt like fate was playing games.

“Miss Black?” the receptionist called. “The CEO would like to meet his final candidate personally.”

Kira froze for half a second. “Personally?”

The woman smiled, polite and terrifying. “Yes. His last assistant resigned last week. You made an impression.”

Her throat went dry.

She followed the woman down the hallway, toward the private elevator. The air changed. It got quieter. Cleaner. Like money itself had a smell and it filled every inch of this floor.

The doors opened. The receptionist didn’t come in. Just smiled.

“He’s waiting for you, Miss Black.”

And just like that, Kira was alone.

In his elevator.

In his world.

Her pulse was a drumline. Her stomach twisted. She should walk away. But her feet didn’t listen.

Ding.

The top floor was all glass and shadow. Moonlight poured through the massive windows even though it was morning. The walls were black, the floors a soft grey, and the silence was almost sacred.

And then she saw him.

Standing by the window, back turned, broad shoulders wrapped in the perfect black suit. His hair was dark and messy in that polished kind of way. His stance calm. Dangerous.

Kira’s breath caught.

Him.

She swallowed hard. Every muscle in her body screamed to flee.

He turned.

Kade Wolfe.

Same ice-grey eyes. Same face that haunted her every dream since that night. But sharper now. Colder. His gaze flicked over her with no recognition.

Nothing.

“Miss Black,” he said, voice deep and low. “You’re the last one.”

His voice. Oh God.

Kira stood straighter. “Lucky me.”

Kade walked to his desk, eyes never leaving hers. He sat, fingers tapping once on the glass surface.

“You’re twenty-four?” he asked.

“Yes.”

“You’ve worked in three different firms in the last two years.”

“People don’t scare me easily.”

A faint smirk curved at the corner of his lips. It wasn’t kind. It was sharp, like the edge of a blade.

“You’re not intimidated.”

“Should I be?” she asked sweetly.

Kade leaned back. “Most people are.”

“I’m not most people.”

He paused. Tilted his head. Stared.

His gaze moved, her lips, her eyes, her hands, but still… nothing. No spark of memory. No flash of recognition. He looked right at her and saw a stranger.

And it burned.

Kira’s heart was a storm. But she didn’t let it show. She stood still, calm, perfect. A ghost wrapped in confidence.

Kade finally looked away. “I don’t usually make decisions in ten minutes, Miss Black.”

Kira smiled. “Then break your rule.”

Silence stretched between them. Heavy. Tense.

And then, he did.

“You’re hired.”

Kira didn’t blink.

“You’ll start tomorrow. Eight sharp. Don’t be late.”

She turned to leave, her heart thundering so hard she thought he’d hear it. She reached for the door.

“Miss Black.”

She froze.

“Yes, sir?”

He was still seated, staring at her like she was something he couldn’t quite figure out. His voice dropped lower.

“Have we met before?”

Kira’s breath hitched.

Every nerve lit up. Every inch of her skin remembered his touch.

She turned her head, met his eyes, and smiled—slow, deadly, sweet.

“No,” she lied. “I’d remember.”

And then she walked out, her hips swaying like nothing in the world could touch her.

But inside?

She was shaking.
