Villain A Broken Hero
The city was a smoldering ruin, flames licking at the sky and casting a hellish glow over the destruction. Buildings crumbled, streets split open, and the cries of the few remaining survivors were barely audible above the roar of the inferno. Among the wreckage, a lone figure moved with slow, labored steps. His body was battered and bloodied, each step a struggle.
He came to a halt, collapsing against the remnants of a broken stone statue. It was the last symbol of the city’s once-proud history, now reduced to rubble. He leaned against it, breath ragged, blood staining his torn clothing as the heat of the fire washed over him.
He closed his eyes, the world around him a blur of smoke and flame. His mind drifted—away from the city, away from the fires, away from the destruction. There was only one thing left in his heart: her.
As his chest heaved with the effort to breathe, he muttered softly to himself, his voice a broken whisper. "Who was the villain in my story? It was me, myself."
A cold laugh escaped his lips, bitter and hollow, as the weight of his realization sank in. He was the cause of all of this. The fire, the destruction, the people lost—he was the one who had brought it all to pass. His heart ached with grief, but not for the city. He had no regret for the ruin around him. His only sorrow was for her, the one he had lost.
His mind slipped into the past, and in that moment, the flames around him quieted.
Flashback: Seven Years Ago
The sun was blazing overhead, casting sharp shadows over the desert city. The streets were filled with chaos, the echoes of gunfire and explosions ringing out as people fled for their lives. Amidst the turmoil, a team of soldiers moved with precision, their leader a masked figure at the front.
Abhiraj, known to his comrades as "The Phantom Captain," wore a tactical black mask that concealed his face, leaving only his sharp, focused eyes visible. He scanned the surroundings, assessing the situation with the calm, calculated demeanor of a seasoned leader.
"Team Alpha, secure the west entrance. Team Bravo, cover the rear," Abhiraj commanded, his voice clear through the comms. "Our mission is to extract the civilians trapped in the central market. We leave no one behind. Understood?"
"Yes, sir!" his men responded, their voices filled with determination.
The team moved quickly through the narrow alleyways, heading toward the central market where the terrorists were holding hostages. As they reached the market, it was a scene of devastation—overturned stalls, debris scattered across the ground, and the smell of smoke thick in the air.
Abhiraj raised his hand, signaling his team to halt. His eyes locked onto a group of terrorists using the civilians as human shields. Among the frightened faces, one stood out—a little girl, no older than seven, clutching a stuffed toy to her chest, her eyes wide with fear.
His heart clenched at the sight. She was terrified, frozen in place as the chaos unfolded around her. Abhiraj’s focus sharpened. He knew he had to act quickly if they were going to save her and the others.
"On my mark," he whispered into his earpiece. "Engage the targets. Prioritize the safety of the hostages. I'll extract the girl."
He counted down silently, then made a swift hand gesture. "Go!"
His team moved with precision, engaging the terrorists with a coordinated assault. Abhiraj sprinted forward, his masked visage making him look like a phantom in the haze of smoke. He reached the little girl, kneeling down to meet her at eye level.
"Hey," he said softly, his voice surprisingly gentle despite the chaos. "It’s okay. I’m here to help you. We need to get you out of here, alright?"
The girl looked up at him, her eyes filled with tears but also a glimmer of hope. She hesitated, clutching her stuffed toy tightly, before nodding.
Without wasting a second, Abhiraj scooped her up into his arms, shielding her with his own body as he dashed towards safety. He could feel her small hands gripping his jacket, the trembling of her tiny frame pressing against his chest. He moved swiftly, navigating through the market as his team provided cover, neutralizing threats with precise shots.
"Cover me!" Abhiraj shouted into his comms as he sprinted towards the extraction point. His men formed a protective line, allowing him and the girl to slip through the chaos unscathed.
They reached the edge of the market, where military vehicles were waiting. He gently set the girl down, kneeling in front of her once more. "You’re safe now," he assured her, his eyes softening. "We’re going to take you to a safe place."
The little girl looked up at him, her fear slowly giving way to gratitude. She reached out and touched the edge of his mask, her small fingers brushing against the fabric. "Thank you," she whispered, her voice barely audible.
Abhiraj gave a slight nod. "Stay close to the soldiers. They’ll take care of you."
He stood up, turning away as his men began loading the rescued civilians into the vehicles. He watched them for a moment, his chest tightening as the girl was helped into a truck by one of his soldiers. She glanced back at him, offering a small, brave smile before she disappeared from sight.

**Back at Base**
The mission was over, but the adrenaline still coursed through Abhiraj as he and his team returned to their base. The atmosphere was tense, a mix of relief and exhaustion settling over the soldiers as they debriefed and tended to their wounds. Abhiraj removed his mask, revealing a face hardened by years of conflict, but his eyes were softer now, the image of the little girl still fresh in his mind.
His second-in-command approached, giving a respectful nod. "Captain, we successfully evacuated all the hostages. No casualties on our side."
"Good," Abhiraj replied, his voice low but firm. He took a deep breath, the weight of his actions settling on his shoulders. "You did well out there. Dismiss the team and get some rest. We’ll debrief in the morning."
As his men dispersed, Abhiraj found a quiet corner and leaned against the wall, staring down at his blood-stained gloves. He had saved lives today, just as he had vowed to do when he first donned the mask. Yet, a nagging thought lingered at the back of his mind—a question he couldn’t shake, even after a successful mission.
For now, he pushed it aside, the image of the little girl’s smile a small comfort amidst the chaos.
