The Witches
The train hissed to a halt, doors sighing open. Selene stepped onto the platform, a tremor of determination in her hands, clutching the strap of her worn backpack.
"A normal life,"
she whispered, the phrase a mantra against the years of isolation. The light brown dye, a stark contrast to the silver that once gleamed, felt heavy on her head, a disguise she hoped would make her seem normal.
Her white eyes, those "moon eyes" her parents had called them,(Now hidden by the brownish contact lenses , again her feeble attempt at a disguise,in which she had spent hours watching YouTube tutorials on.) scanned the bustling street, a familiar unease swirling within her. They saw things others didn't, whispers of the unseen, echoes of the departed. It was a gift, they'd said, but in her small town, it was a curse. And then, the dreams, vivid and terrifying, always coming true.
She approached the villa, a stark contrast to the small but cozy home she'd left behind. It was her grandmother's world, a world her mother had deliberately left. The memory of her mother's gentle smile, her firm belief in a quiet life, tugged at Selene's heart.
A uniformed woman opened the heavy oak door.
"Miss Selene, I presume?"
"Yes,"
Selene replied, her voice a little lost.
"Allow me,"
the woman offered, reaching for her luggage.
"Oh, no, it's—"
The sharp click of heels on marble stairs cut her off. A figure descended, elegant and regal, her grandmother.
"Lena! My little Lena!"Selene's breath hitched.
"Granny!"
She rushed forward, the weight of her past momentarily forgotten in the warmth of the embrace.
"My little goddess,"her grandmother purred.
Selene winced."Just Lena, please."She liked that nickname...secretly she would not let her grandma know or shed get ...well you know .. She couldn't handle the goddess nickname too cringy for her ,and she didn't want to give her granny any more ideas.
"Nonsense,"her grandmother chuckled."Now, let Marie take your things. Tea or maybe some coffe, and then rest. Tomorrow, you conquer that school."
"It was a surprise, Aunt Emma's message,"
Selene said, following her grandmother into the opulent living room.
"After… after your Mom and Dad…"Her grandmother's smile faltered.
"It was… difficult. I needed time. And your aunt, she has her own life. It's best you're here, with me."Selene nodded, her gaze drifting to the ornate ceiling.
"I hope so."
A normal life, she thought, the phrase echoing in her mind. That's all I want. She remembered a dream from the night before, a single, dark, twisting tree in an otherwise empty field, a chill ran down her spine. If she had learned anything, it was that her dreams were not to be ignored.
And that dream she knew told more than the occasional tripping on a stone or embarrassing yourself in front of your crush. In which she did not have experience in (it was her 1 and only friend which she had to leave behind who did).Trying to get her mind off of it focused on what her more immediate future held. Maybe, just maybe, in this city, she could blend in, be just Selene, without the whispers and the fear. With a bit of luck, maybe even make a friend, or two. And the thought of school, of a fresh start, held a glimmer of hope.
That night while scrolling on her new schools feed, she came across a photo of a boy around her age. Immediately something within her stirred, and it was not because the guy which was only in his swimwear either because some girl apparently by the profile pic had secretly taken his photo, or he seriously liked to show off, was extremely hot which she hated to admit.''
''Nope''she murmured to herself
''definitely not because he's hot''but more so because she felt like she had seen him before, which made her uneasy for some reason.
''One look at his arrogant face and you know he's bad news very bad news'' she looked at his face for a good while actually but the uneasiness she felt in her heart did not dissipate.
''Ugh looking at his photo isn't gonna get me anywhere.I should just get some rest tomorrow is the big day.''she muttered that to herself and crawled into tthe blanket soon a deep sleep claimed her
