The night wasn’t over, and neither was the game.
Adrian hadn’t expected Evelyn to challenge him in the way she had. He’d thought she was just another distraction, another pretty face to entertain his attention for a few moments. But the more he got to know her, the more he realized how wrong he was.
She wasn’t a distraction. She was his equal, in every sense of the word.
It bothered him. More than he cared to admit.
And that smile of hers, the way she could make him feel like he was losing without even trying—he hated it. And he hated that he couldn’t stop thinking about it.
Adrian leaned against the balcony railing, his mind racing. The view of the city below him was nothing compared to the chaos swirling inside his head. He was supposed to be in control. He always was. But with Evelyn, it felt like he was playing catch-up. Every move she made was deliberate, calculated, and just when he thought he had her figured out, she threw him off balance.
“Penny for your thoughts?”
Adrian didn’t need to look to know it was Damien. He straightened up, turning to face him. “This isn’t about her,” he said, though the words didn’t sound convincing, even to his own ears.
Damien raised an eyebrow. “Sure. But you’re not fooling anyone. You’re too invested.”
“I’m not invested,” Adrian replied, a little too quickly. “It’s just—she’s different, okay? She’s not what I expected.”
Damien chuckled. “You’re not used to that, are you? Being surprised?”
Adrian’s eyes narrowed. “I don’t like surprises.”
“Well, get used to them,” Damien said with a shrug. “You’ve got a real challenge ahead of you with Evelyn. But I’m curious—how long before you crack?”
Adrian didn’t respond. He wasn’t about to admit that the idea of cracking, of letting her get under his skin, was already becoming too tempting. Every time she spoke, every time she looked at him with that damn smile, he felt himself unravel a little more.
And that scared him.
---
Evelyn was sitting alone at the bar now, a glass of wine in hand, her fingers tracing the rim absentmindedly. She knew Adrian was watching her. She always knew when he was near. The tension between them was like electricity, crackling in the air.
She wasn’t afraid of him. No, it was the opposite. She was curious. Adrian had a way of pulling people in, of making them want to be a part of his world. But Evelyn didn’t need to belong to anyone. She wasn’t in this for power or control. She was in it for the thrill, for the challenge.
And right now, Adrian was her most exciting challenge yet.
She hadn’t expected him to approach her like he had, his words sharp but not uninviting. There was something in his eyes—something that told her he wasn’t as certain as he appeared.
He was losing control.
And she liked it.
When he finally walked up to her, the air between them seemed to charge. She didn’t look up immediately, making him wait, testing his patience.
When she finally met his gaze, her lips curled into a playful smile. “What’s on your mind, Adrian?” she asked, her voice soft, teasing.
“You.”
Evelyn raised an eyebrow. “Me?”
“Yeah,” he said, stepping closer. “You.”
The moment hung there, suspended in time. The challenge was clear. The game was no longer just about power or control. It was about who would break first.
And Evelyn wasn’t planning on being the one to break.
