A Line Without a Hook
As the young knight wandered through the halls of the palace, he couldn't help but steal glances at the princess. Her beauty took his breath away, and his heart ached to touch her soft lips. He knew that he was destined to be her guardian, not her lover, but the thought of someone else holding her hand made him shiver the days were long and the nights longer, as he dreamed of the day when he could openly reveal his feelings.
The news hit the young knight like a heavy blow. He could never have her, he had known that, but hearing it out loud made the pain unbearable. He stood frozen in despair, while everyone around him celebrated the announcement. He longed to run away, to lose himself in his work and find comfort in solitude. But there was no escape from the pain of losing his one true love, the princess he would die to protect.
He knew her every move, her favorite foods, her favorite color, even the sound of her laugh. He had watched her grow into a beautiful woman, and it made his heart ache to know that she would become another man's wife. He had always stood behind her, sword in hand, fighting off any danger that came their way. He couldn't help but feel that it should have been him, not some foreign prince.
He couldn't help but to compare himself to this mysterious prince. He knew nothing about him, just that he was likely some wealthy, spoilt prat, with no sense of honor or loyalty. He was sure that this prince had never held a sword to protect anyone. His own skills were renowned across the land, yet no one seemed to care. He couldn't help but think that the prince was more of a pampered doll than a real man.
He was sure that the prince would never love the princess like him. He was sure that she would live a life of luxury, never knowing the value of hard He had been nothing but loyal and devoted, yet he was cast aside. It was enough to drive any man insane.
He knew that he would never have the chance to hold her hand, to run his fingers through her soft hair, or to hear her gentle voice call his name. All he could do was stand there, stoic and frozen, and watch as his dreams slowly shattered.
