"A quiet girl is often mistaken for a weak one. They forget that fire burns brightest when the wind is still."
Maria Rosa Thomson walked through the corridors of her home with a new kind of awareness. Every glance, every whisper, every moment of silence it all carried weight.
She had never noticed it before, not in the way she did now.
The way the servants hesitated before speaking to her. The way her father barely acknowledged her presence at breakfast. The way her mother moved through life as if she had learned to fold herself smaller, to take up less space in a world that had never truly welcomed her.
Maria hated it.
But more than that she understood it now.
Her mother had survived by adapting. By making herself tolerable to those who wished she weren’t there at all. And Maria knew, without a doubt, that this was what was expected of her, too.
To be quiet. To be polite. To endure.
Maria had no intention of doing any of those things.
The Unspoken Rules of Society
At the next gathering, Maria was made painfully aware of her place.
Lady Eleanor Ashford had invited a select group of noble families to her estate a gathering of power, thinly disguised as an afternoon tea. The kind of event her mother had spent years attending with practiced grace.
Maria had never cared much for these affairs, but today, she watched carefully.
She saw how Lady Eleanor smiled with her lips but never her eyes. How conversations were woven like traps, ready to ensnare the careless. How young ladies with noble bloodlines were measured not by their wit or strength, but by their beauty, their obedience, and their usefulness in marriage.
And she saw, very clearly, that she was not one of them.
She was the daughter of a man who had lost favor. The girl born from a marriage that was forced, not celebrated. The proof of a mistake no one wanted to acknowledge.
Tobias Ashford the same boy she had struck days ago made his opinion of her very clear.
"You should have stayed home," he sneered as she passed. "It would have saved your father the embarrassment."
Maria met his gaze, unflinching. "Funny, I was just thinking the same about you."
A few gasps. A poorly hidden smirk from a girl nearby. Tobias flushed red with fury, but Maria had already turned away, her heart steady, her pulse calm.
She would not be silent.
But she would be smart.
A Conversation with Lady Eleanor
The moment Maria felt Lady Eleanor’s sharp gaze on her, she knew the woman had been watching.
It wasn’t long before she was summoned to the older woman’s side.
"Maria Rosa Thomson," Lady Eleanor said, her voice smooth as silk, her tone unreadable. "Your mother must be proud of you today."
Maria smiled the same kind of smile Lady Eleanor wore. "I certainly hope so, my lady."
The older woman studied her for a long moment, as if weighing something unseen. "I have heard whispers about you, child. That you are... difficult."
Maria tilted her head slightly. "Only to those who would prefer I weren’t here."
Lady Eleanor’s lips twitched in amusement. "Spoken like a girl who does not yet understand the world she lives in."
Maria did not flinch. "And what world is that, my lady?"
"The world of men," Lady Eleanor said simply. "A world where power is not given it is allowed."
Maria held her gaze. "Then I will find a way to take it."
Lady Eleanor let out a soft laugh, though there was no warmth in it. "Careful, girl. There is a difference between ambition and recklessness. You would do well to learn it before you burn everything around you."
Maria did not answer.
But inside, she knew.
She was not afraid of fire.
A Mother’s Warning
Later that night, Isabella Rosa Thomson sat beside Maria in the candlelit parlor, her expression unreadable.
“You spoke to Lady Eleanor today,” her mother said, her voice quiet.
Maria nodded. “She thinks I am reckless.”
Her mother sighed. “She thinks you are dangerous.”
Maria looked at her mother carefully. “And are you afraid of that, too?”
A pause. Then, a sad smile. “No, my love. I am afraid of what the world will do to you for it.”
Maria set her jaw. “Then let them try.”
Her mother closed her eyes briefly before whispering, “They already are.”
Maria understood.
The world was watching.
And she was ready.
"Maria’s understanding of the world she is up against, while also showing her growing ability to play the game. "
