The Gatekeeper Beneath

The sky above Mirror Lake boiled with clouds as Kael, Arin, and Veylen circled the lake on wyvern-back. Below, the lake’s surface was impossibly still—like a black mirror stretching to the horizon. No wind. No birds. Even the trees lining its shores bent away from it, as though nature itself feared to face the water.

They landed on a jagged, half-sunken stone pier, the wyvern growling low with unease.

Kael stepped forward, the starstone glowing faintly in her palm.

"It’s down there," she said quietly.

"The Gatekeeper."

Veylen knelt beside the water, watching the reflection of the sky ripple unnaturally.

"The Masked One said it was born of fire and void. What could that even mean?"

"A fusion," Arin replied. "Something that was never meant to exist."

Suddenly, the lake rippled—not from wind, but from something deep beneath the surface. A low hum vibrated through the ground. Kael’s knees buckled.

The starstone flashed.

A geyser of black water exploded into the sky as a monstrous figure burst from the lake’s center. Its form twisted—draconic wings, a body half on fire, half wreathed in swirling darkness. Eyes like molten suns burned through the fog.

The Gatekeeper.

Its voice cracked the silence.

"WHO BEARS THE STARFIRE?"

Kael stepped forward, holding the glowing stone high.

"I do. I seek to close the rift."

The Gatekeeper growled, its voice layered with echoes.

"THE RIFT IS NOT TO BE CLOSED. IT IS A PASSAGE… A RECKONING."

Arin drew his dagger.

"I don’t like where this is going."

The Gatekeeper rose, towering above them.

"TO STOP THE RIFT, YOU MUST CHOOSE—FIRE OR VOID. ONE MUST BE SACRIFICED."

Veylen frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"One of us?" Kael asked.

The creature's silence was answer enough.

Then, the starstone began to glow blindingly. Kael gasped. The world faded around her.

---

She stood alone in a vast black void. A voice echoed—familiar and ancient.

"Your blood is bound to the First Flame, Kael. The starfire lives through you. But your flame is incomplete."

A shape formed—her reflection, but different. Darker. A version of her with silver eyes and flame-black hair.

"This is what the Gatekeeper meant. To seal the rift, you must give up the part of you born of void... or of fire."

---

Kael gasped, stumbling back into reality. The Gatekeeper was waiting.

"CHOOSE."

She looked at Veylen. At Arin. Then at the reflection in the lake—herself, divided.

"I won’t choose between them," she said. "I’ll forge something new."

And she hurled the starstone into the air.

It shattered—sending a wave of silver flame and shadow outward. It engulfed her, and for a moment, everything went silent.

When the light faded, Kael stood glowing with both fire and void, her eyes flickering between red and silver.

The Gatekeeper stepped back.

"IMPOSSIBLE..."

Kael raised her hand.

"Tell the rift… balance can be born. Not forced."

The Gatekeeper roared—and charged.
