Chapter 8: The Midnight Assault
Kaito sat on the edge of his cot, staring at the ground, his mind racing.
His tent was dimly lit by a single lantern, its flickering glow casting shadows across the canvas walls. Outside, the night was silent—too silent.
But inside his head, it was chaos.
He had spent the entire night thinking.
Thinking about what he saw. About the soldiers taking demon women as slaves. About the one he saved and the man he killed for it.
He had come here believing he was fighting for the right cause—to protect families like Aldric’s, to bring peace by ending the Demon King’s army.
But what if… he was wrong?
He clenched his fists.
"What the hell am I supposed to do?"
If he stayed silent, he would be no different from the rest. If he spoke up, no one would listen. Aldric made that clear. The army didn’t care.
For the first time since coming to this world, he felt trapped.
Then, suddenly—
A soldier burst into his tent, panting heavily.
"Hero!" The man was out of breath, his armor smeared with blood and dirt. "The Demon King’s army—they’ve launched a midnight attack!"
Kaito froze.
"What?"
"They hit our eastern camp first," the soldier gasped. "There are heavy casualties—we need you!"
Kaito stood up, his stomach twisting.
People were dying. His first thought should have been to go help.
But instead—
A dark thought crept into his mind.
"Maybe… letting them die now is the best choice."
Maybe if the kingdom’s army was weakened, fewer innocent demon civilians would be slaughtered. Maybe the war would end sooner if the humans lost.
For the first time, he hesitated.
For the first time, he considered doing nothing.
But then—
He gritted his teeth, shaking the thought away.
No matter how disgusted he was with this army, he couldn’t just stand by and watch people get killed.
Not yet.
Not like this.
He grabbed his sword and rushed outside.
The Battle in the Night
The camp was in chaos.
Fires burned across the field, casting an eerie red glow against the darkness. Soldiers shouted orders, clashing with demon warriors in the muddy trenches.
But something was off.
Kaito had fought demons before. He had seen them charge in blind fury, throwing themselves into battle without hesitation.
But tonight… they were different.
They struck precisely, their attacks targeted. They moved quickly, cutting down soldiers before vanishing into the darkness.
They weren’t trying to win a battle.
They were here to damage and retreat.
"A raid?" Kaito realized. "This isn’t a full invasion—it’s a planned assault."
Aldric sliced through an enemy nearby, then turned to Kaito as he arrived.
"Finally decided to show up?" Aldric grunted. His blade was already coated in blood.
Kaito ignored him, scanning the battlefield.
The demon warriors weren’t staying in one place. They were hitting supply stations, targeting commanders, then pulling back before the humans could mount a proper defense.
And it was working.
The kingdom’s forces were falling apart.
Kaito tightened his grip on his sword.
The demons were fighting smarter now.
This war wasn’t going to be as simple as he thought.
And deep inside, a sinking feeling grew.
"If the demons are this organized… maybe the humans aren’t the only ones trying to end this war."
But if that was the case…
Then why was this war still happening?
