Chapter 2: The Bond of Tradition

The morning light pierced through the thick trees surrounding Siddapura, casting a golden glow on the village. The sound of crows cawing and the distant hum of morning activity filled the air. The villagers had already begun their day, tending to their crops, gathering water, and preparing for the day’s work. Life in the village moved in its own rhythm, slow but steady, like the flow of the river nearby.

Shiv had always admired the simplicity of village life. But today, as he walked through the village after his morning prayers, he couldn’t help but feel the weight of his responsibilities pressing on him. He had returned not just as the grandson of the former village head, but as the new leader, expected to uphold the traditions that had been passed down for generations.

As he walked towards the village temple, his mind wandered to the events of the previous evening. The promise his grandfather had made to Arundhati’s family felt like a heavy chain wrapped around his heart. It wasn’t that he disliked her — in fact, there was something about her that made him feel both protective and guilty. She was young, innocent, and full of life, the complete opposite of the burdened man he had become.

But Shiv’s heart had always been with Ananya, the girl he had left behind in the city. He remembered her laugh, her bright eyes, and how her presence had always made him feel alive. She was the one he had planned to build a future with. But fate had other plans. When his father had passed away suddenly, he had been forced to return to Siddapura, abandoning the love of his life to take on the role of village head.

As Shiv stood before the temple idol, he closed his eyes, seeking solace. The prayers of his ancestors seemed to whisper through the breeze, reminding him of the duty that came with his bloodline. He had no choice but to fulfill the role and the promise made to Arundhati’s grandfather.

Later that morning, Arundhati arrived at Shiv’s house, her parents in tow. She had a quiet, almost reserved way about her, and Shiv noticed how she looked around, taking in the sight of the large courtyard and the ancestral home that had once belonged to his grandfather. Despite the beauty of the place, there was a sense of sadness in her eyes, as if she, too, felt the weight of the situation.

“Shiv,” she greeted him softly, her voice gentle like a breeze. “I hope your morning prayers went well.”

Shiv smiled politely, nodding in response. “Yes, Arundhati. Thank you for asking.”

Her presence was calming, but it did nothing to ease the tension in his heart. He couldn’t help but notice how fair and delicate she looked, her simple yet elegant saree flowing around her like a soft cloud. She was beautiful, no doubt. But there was something more — a quiet strength that Shiv had not expected. It made him wonder if, perhaps, she had her own dreams and desires, ones that didn’t align with this marriage.

As the two families sat down for a meal, there was an air of formality to everything. Shiv’s parents, although kind and welcoming, were clearly caught in the same web of tradition and expectation. They had always wanted this marriage to happen, and now, with Shiv’s return, it seemed that their dreams were coming true.

The conversation flowed, but it was strained. Shiv found himself answering questions mechanically, his thoughts drifting to the life he had left behind. He couldn’t help but wonder if this was all meant to be — if he was meant to move on from his past and embrace this new chapter with Arundhati.

But was he ready? Could he really forget Ananya, the girl he had loved with all his heart?

Later that evening, as he sat alone in his room, Shiv reflected on the events of the day. The village head’s position came with its own set of expectations, but Shiv knew that he couldn’t escape the pull of his own emotions. He had to make peace with the life he had been given, and yet, the question lingered — could he ever truly love someone else
