The pregnancy test

Austin's throat was dry, his body hot from the overwhelming tension of the night. His mind was still reeling from the events at the ball—Xander’s intense gaze, the unexpected proposal, and the way the room had fallen into suffocating silence.

Desperate for relief, he reached for a goblet of wine from the nearest table and gulped it down. One drink turned into two, then three, and before he knew it, he had lost count. The world around him blurred, laughter and music melting together into a dizzying haze.

Then—darkness.

The Next Morning

A sharp pounding in his head pulled Austin back to consciousness. His body ached, every muscle sore as if he had been thrown around in his sleep.

A groan escaped his lips as he shifted beneath the silk sheets, his limbs heavy and sluggish. His stomach twisted painfully, nausea clawing at his throat. He barely had time to sit up before the overwhelming urge to vomit took over.

He clutched his head, trying to piece together the fragments of last night.

Something was wrong.

His nightgown was disheveled, his body sore in ways that made his stomach churn with unease. Panic flared inside him as he struggled to recall what had happened after he drank.

Austin’s breath quickened.

What had he done?

And more importantly—what had Xander done?

Austin stumbled to his feet, barely able to stand straight. His stomach churned uncontrollably, and with no other choice, he rushed to the nearest chamber pot and emptied the contents of his stomach. The pain and nausea were unbearable, and he gasped for air, trying to steady himself.

When the dizziness subsided, he caught sight of a small box on a nearby table, an item he hadn’t noticed before. His hands trembling, he picked it up, a strange sense of dread washing over him. It was a pregnancy test, the kind he'd only heard about in whispers from other women.

His heart raced as he opened the box, still unsure of what exactly he was about to do. Despite his disbelief, Austin followed the instructions. His hands were shaky as he waited, counting the seconds. And then, there it was: the result.

Positive.

Austin stared at the test, his mind struggling to process the impossible reality before him. How could this be? He was male—he couldn’t get pregnant. This didn’t make sense. None of it did. He wasn’t supposed to be living in this world, experiencing things that shouldn’t even happen to him.

He closed his eyes, trying to block out the confusion, but everything felt wrong. This was not in the story. This was not how things were supposed to go.

His mind reeled back to the kiss with Xander, the intense emotions, the unexpected twist in the tale. But pregnancy? That was a whole new level of absurdity. He was stuck in someone else’s life, living a tale that was supposed to have no room for such complications.

With shaky hands, he clutched the test tighter, still in disbelief.

What was going on?
