A tail of my own

Noah fidgeted with the necklace in his hands, his eyes darting between the merman and the shimmering shell.

His mind was racing.

Soulmates.

The words still felt unreal.

Taking a deep breath, he finally spoke.

“So… um.” Noah cleared his throat, trying to sound casual. “Since we’re soulmates and all, and that ‘match found’ thing happened… I was just wondering—hypothetically—if you were in another relationship… would you ever want a baby?”

The merman’s sharp blue eyes flickered with something unreadable.

Noah quickly added, “I mean, you know, with a woman, since I obviously can’t have one. Just asking. Not that it matters. Just curious.”

Silence.

The merman’s expression remained unreadable for a long moment before he finally scoffed.

“That’s none of your business.”

Noah felt his stomach twist.

Before he could react, the merman added in a flat, uninterested tone,

“And if you’re asking if I want a child, the answer is no. I don’t want to deal with the hassle of raising a brat.”

Noah blinked.

Then frowned.

Somehow, he didn’t expect that answer.

He thought the merman would at least consider it.

But the way he said it… like it was something he’d never even entertain the thought of…

“Oh. Right. Got it.” Noah muttered, stuffing the necklace in his pocket. “Forget I asked.”

But in the back of Noah’s mind…

And he wasn’t sure why.

Noah hesitated, his fingers trembling as he lifted the seashell necklace.

It was simple yet beautiful, shimmering in the light.

With a deep breath, he slipped it over his head.

For a moment, nothing happened.

A strange warmth spread through his body.

Noah gasped as a sudden tingling sensation raced down his spine, pooling in his legs.

Something shifted. Twisted. Changed.

His knees buckled.

He collapsed onto the floor, panic surging through his chest.

“W-What—?!”

Noah looked down—

And froze.

Where his legs had once been… a long, glistening tail now shimmered in the dim light.

It was a stunning blend of deep blue and green, the scales reflecting light like precious gems.

His breath hitched.

“Wh-What the hell is this?!”

A low chuckle made him snap his head up.

The merman stood before him, arms crossed, an amused smirk on his lips.

“What a pretty tail.”

Noah’s face burned red.

“D-Don’t say it like that! Help me turn back!”

But the merman ignored him.

Instead, he moved closer, kneeling before him. His long fingers traced the edge of Noah’s new tail, sending an unfamiliar shiver through him.

Noah shuddered, clamping his mouth shut.

The merman’s smirk only widened.

“Let’s go for a swim.”

Before Noah could protest, the merman scooped him up effortlessly, carrying him like he weighed nothing.

“H-Hey! Put me down!” Noah yelled, struggling.

But the merman ignored him again, walking straight toward the open balcony—

And then—

He jumped.

Noah screamed as they plunged into the ocean, the water swallowing them whole.

But then—

Something strange happened.

He could breathe.

Noah’s eyes widened.

He wasn’t choking. He wasn’t drowning.

He was… breathing underwater.

He whipped around, stunned.

The merman was now in his true form, his powerful tail moving effortlessly through the water, long hair floating around him like dark ink.

His glowing blue eyes locked onto Noah’s.

And he smirked.

“Welcome to my world.”

Noah’s heart pounded.

What the hell was happening to him?
