The void lurched.
His vision blurred as the world unraveled, dissolving into threads of light and shadow. He was falling again—but this time, it wasn’t chaotic. The descent felt… guided.
He braced for impact, but instead of crashing into another strange world, he landed gently. The transition was eerily smooth, as if something—or someone—wanted him here.
The air was thick with electric tension, the scent of rain lingering even though no storm brewed overhead. He looked around, taking in his new surroundings.
He stood at the edge of an impossibly large stone bridge, stretching across a bottomless abyss. The bridge’s surface was cracked, yet it didn’t crumble. Strange symbols glowed faintly along the edges, pulsing with an otherworldly rhythm.
Ahead, at the far end of the bridge, two figures waited.
His breath caught. He recognized them.
One was a warrior cloaked in golden light, armor gleaming like it had been forged from the heart of a sun. His stance was rigid, his sword resting against the ground, but there was something… familiar about him.
The other figure was the opposite—a woman wreathed in shifting darkness, eyes filled with quiet sorrow. Her presence warped the air around her, as if reality itself resisted her existence.
They were both waiting for him.
And somehow, he knew this wasn’t their first meeting.
The Two Paths
"You’re late."
The golden warrior’s voice was firm but not unkind. It carried weight, like a ruler addressing his people.
He stepped forward, his instincts screaming at him to be cautious. "Who are you?"
The warrior exhaled, shaking his head. "Always the same question. And I always give the same answer." He raised his sword, pointing at him. "I am one of your possible futures. The one where you become a Guardian of the Multiverse."
His stomach twisted. "A Guardian?"
The warrior nodded. "A protector. A being who upholds balance between worlds, ensuring that forces like the Eraser never succeed."
He turned to the woman, her presence like a whisper of forgotten dreams.
"And you?"
She gave a small, tired smile. "I am also a possible future. The one where you stop running. Where you embrace the truth that the multiverse is broken… and that some things are beyond saving."
His pulse quickened. "What does that mean?"
She tilted her head. "It means you become what you fear."
The Choice
The bridge trembled beneath them. A deep cracking sound echoed through the abyss.
The warrior tightened his grip on his sword. "Time is running out. You must choose."
The woman sighed. "Or don’t. Either way, we will meet again."
His chest tightened. "I don’t even know what I’m choosing between!"
The warrior’s gaze softened just a little. "It’s not about choosing between us. It’s about choosing who you become."
The woman nodded. "The path of a protector… or the path of one who seeks to break free from the cycle."
The bridge began to collapse.
He had to decide.
A Third Option
But then—something shifted.
A whisper. A ripple in the air.
For a fraction of a second, he saw a third figure standing behind them.
A shadow of himself. Neither light nor dark. Something in between.
"…You don’t have to choose yet."
The voice was his own. But it came from everywhere and nowhere.
The warrior and the woman both looked at him—truly looked at him—and for the first time, they seemed uncertain.
The realization struck him like a bolt of lightning.
"This is why the Eraser is hunting me."
He wasn’t meant to follow either path. He was meant to be something else entirely.
The bridge collapsed.
The world fractured.
And as he fell into the unknown once more, a single thought burned in his mind:
"I am more than just a possibility."
"I am the one who decides what I become."
