Chapter 9: Shadows Unleashed

The darkness surged forward. It moved like a living thing, curling and writhing, hungry to consume.

Evelyn barely had time to react before the shadows hit her. A force like ice and fire tore through her ghostly form, dragging her down. Her vision fractured—memories colliding, the past bleeding into the present.

A dance. A whisper. A knife.

Pain.

Azrael moved.

His mortal disguise flickered, the air around him rippling with an unseen power. With a flick of his wrist, a barrier of flame erupted between Evelyn and the grasping shadows. The fire burned an unnatural blue, hissing as it met the darkness.

Laurence’s laughter echoed through the ruined ballroom. “You can’t protect her, devil.” His form flickered, shifting like smoke. “She belongs to me.”

Azrael stepped forward, his golden eyes gleaming with something dangerous. “I don’t share.”

With a twist of his hand, the flames exploded, forcing the shadows back. Evelyn gasped, the pressure around her lifting as Azrael’s power flared. For a moment, she felt… warm.

Laurence’s form reassembled on the far side of the ballroom, his voice dark with amusement. “Interesting. You care for her.”

Azrael let out a slow breath, rolling his shoulders. “Hardly.” His smirk returned, sharp as a blade. “I just hate losing.”

Evelyn pushed herself upright, her translucent form flickering. Her mind spun from Laurence’s words. She had the power? She had betrayed him? None of it made sense.

She forced herself to meet his shadowed gaze. “You’re lying.”

Laurence’s voice was like silk. “Am I? Or have you simply forgotten?”

Azrael shot her a glance. “Don’t listen to him. Shadows like him thrive on doubt.”

But something in Evelyn’s soul ached. The locket. The whispers. The fear.

What if Laurence was right? What if she had done something terrible?

Laurence’s form twisted. “You can’t run from the truth forever, Evelyn.”

Azrael sighed. “I hate dramatic ghosts.” He lifted a hand, summoning another surge of flame. “Let’s end this.”

Laurence’s laughter turned sharp. “You think you can banish me so easily, devil?”

Azrael smirked. “I think I can make you scream.”

The shadows thickened, tendrils reaching toward them. The entire room darkened, the air heavy with something ancient and wrong.

Evelyn’s chest tightened. This is where I died.

The realization struck her like lightning.

She knew this darkness.

She had felt it before.

And suddenly, she remembered—

The knife in Laurence’s hand. The way his voice had trembled, not with rage, but with desperation.

The blood on her hands.

The sound of his scream.

She had fought back.

She had killed him.

Evelyn’s form flickered violently. “No… that’s not possible…”

Laurence’s laughter twisted into a snarl. “You remember now.”

Azrael’s flames dimmed for a fraction of a second. His gaze snapped to her. “Evelyn?”

She stared at Laurence, her hands shaking. “I killed you.”

Laurence’s shadowy form surged forward. “And yet I’m still here.”

The room shattered.

The darkness consumed them.
