Chapter 20: The Unseen Path

The days following Father Aldric’s disappearance felt like a fragile silence, suspended between the past and what was yet to come. Eliza had returned to her quarters within the abbey, but the sense of peace she had longed for was elusive. Her thoughts, once clear, were now muddled with the echoes of Aldric’s words. He had said she would fall. He had said the darkness would return.

But no matter how hard she tried to shake them, those words lingered like an invisible shadow. Every corner she turned, every whisper of wind, felt as though it were teasing her, urging her to slip, to give in to the familiar pull of despair.

Clara had been a steady presence during this uncertain time. She had been the one to encourage Eliza to meditate, to rediscover herself without the veil’s constant glow, to remember the woman she was before the curse had taken hold. And yet, despite Clara’s reassurances, Eliza still felt like a stranger to herself.

She had spent hours walking the grounds of the abbey, trying to find peace in the stillness, but every time her thoughts drifted to her future, a deep sense of doubt crept in. What was she now? Who was she without the fight to define her?

The veil, once a powerful symbol of her struggle, now felt like a weight in her hands, no longer pulsing with the energy it had before. The light that had once been fierce and vibrant had dimmed, fading into an almost lifeless glow. It was no longer a beacon of hope; it was simply a reminder of what she had lost, of what had been and what might still be.

One evening, after the last rays of sunlight had slipped behind the hills, Eliza found herself standing by the edge of the abbey courtyard once more. The cool breeze rustled through the trees, their leaves whispering secrets to the night. She could hear the faint murmur of water from the nearby stream, and the distant croak of a lone frog. The world seemed to be waiting.

“Eliza?”

She turned to see Clara approaching, her face thoughtful, her eyes searching.

“You’ve been standing here for hours again,” Clara said softly. “Is something troubling you?”

Eliza didn’t respond immediately. She simply looked at Clara, the words tangled in her throat. The older woman had become her anchor during this tumultuous time, but Eliza still couldn’t shake the sense that something was missing—something essential to who she was, or at least who she had been.

“I don’t know if I can do this,” Eliza admitted at last, her voice small but honest. “I thought I was ready. I thought I was stronger, but I… I’m lost, Clara.”

Clara stood quietly for a moment, considering the words before speaking. “You’re not lost, Eliza. But you’ve been through a great deal. You’ve fought a war within yourself, and the victory is still fresh. It takes time to heal. To adjust.”

“I feel like I don’t belong here anymore,” Eliza confessed, a tremor in her voice. “I spent so long focused on the fight, on surviving, that I never stopped to think about who I would be when it was over.”

Clara nodded, her expression compassionate. “You’ve been running, Eliza. Not just from the curse, but from yourself. You’ve been so consumed by what you’ve had to do, you haven’t allowed yourself to simply *be*. The world has a way of pushing us in directions we don’t always choose. But now, you can choose.”

Eliza lowered her gaze to the veil in her hands, watching the faint flicker of light. It wasn’t gone, not completely. But it was weaker, distant, like a flame struggling to stay alive. Was it a sign of her own uncertainty? Or had the darkness truly been defeated, as Clara said?

“What do I do now?” Eliza asked, her voice barely a whisper. “How do I move forward when everything feels so… uncertain?”

“You walk forward, step by step,” Clara said, her voice soft but firm. “The path will not be clear all the time, but it will always be yours. You’ve already chosen who you are, Eliza. Now it’s time to live it.”

For a long moment, Eliza didn’t speak. The weight of Clara’s words sank into her, settling into the depths of her soul. She realized then that she had been waiting for someone else to tell her what to do, to guide her through the fog of her uncertainty. But the truth was, no one could do that for her.

Clara was right. She had already chosen.

The darkness would always be there, but it didn’t define her. She could feel the remnants of Aldric’s curse, like an old scar, still present but no longer powerful enough to control her. It was time to let it fade, to release the last vestiges of its hold.

“I think… I think I need to leave,” Eliza said finally, her voice steady. “I need to find my own path now. I can’t stay here forever.”

Clara studied her for a long time, then nodded slowly. “I understand. The world is waiting for you, Eliza. Don’t be afraid to step into it.”

Eliza took one last look around the abbey. It had been a place of refuge, of growth, but now it felt like a chapter that had come to its end. She had learned what she needed to here—how to fight, how to survive, how to stand tall despite the darkness.

With the veil still faintly glowing in her hands, Eliza turned toward the road ahead, her heart lighter than it had been in years. The future was unclear, but she knew one thing for certain: it was hers to shape. The journey had only just begun.

And she would walk it, step by step, no matter what came next.
