Chapter 13: The Last Temptation

Eliza’s heart was still pounding from her encounter with the curse. Her grip on the veil remained tight, its fabric almost burning against her skin. The darkness still lingered in the corners of her mind, whispering, tugging at her sanity.

She stood in the middle of the room, trying to steady her breath. This isn’t over, she thought. It’s never over.

“Eliza…” Sister Clara’s voice came softly from behind her.

Eliza turned, her eyes narrowing. “Clara, is that you?”

“It’s me,” Clara’s voice was faint, almost drowned out by the whispers of the curse. “You’re not alone. You’ve come so far. But there is more you must face.”

“More?” Eliza’s voice cracked. “I’ve faced enough. I can’t keep doing this. It’s too much.”

The shadows seemed to swirl, deepening the tension in the room. The whispers grew louder, a chorus of voices in her head. You can’t escape us. You’ll never escape.

Eliza staggered back, clutching the veil tighter. “Shut up! Just… leave me alone.”

“Eliza, listen to me,” Clara’s voice cut through the noise, firm and steady. “The curse is always trying to break you. But you can’t let it. You have the strength to resist, but only if you choose to.”

“I don’t know if I can choose anymore.” Eliza’s voice wavered, the weight of the curse pressing down on her like a storm. “Every time I think I’ve won, it pulls me back.”

“You haven’t lost yet,” Clara insisted. “You’re not broken. Don’t let the curse make you think you are.”

“But it feels like I’m already lost,” Eliza whispered. “It’s inside me, Clara. It’s always inside me.”

The shadows stretched, reaching out like cold hands. You belong to us, they hissed. You’ll never be free.

Eliza shook her head, her face twisting with frustration. “No. I’m not yours.”

“Eliza,” Clara’s voice softened, almost pleading. “It’s not too late. You still have the power to choose. You’ve always had the power.”

“I don’t know what’s real anymore,” Eliza said, her voice full of doubt. “It’s all… it’s all so twisted. I don’t even know who I am anymore.”

“You’re Eliza,” Clara replied. “You are still the same person you were before. The curse hasn’t taken that away.”

“Then why does it feel like it’s changing me?” Eliza asked, her eyes filling with tears. “I can feel it. I can feel myself slipping.”

“You’re not slipping,” Clara said urgently. “The darkness is trying to make you think you are, but you’re not. You still have control.”

Eliza closed her eyes, trying to fight the despair rising in her chest. The whispers didn’t stop. You’re ours. You will always be ours.

“I’m not yours,” Eliza repeated, though her voice wavered. “I won’t be. I can still fight.”

A cold laugh echoed in the room. The darkness thickened, swirling around her like a storm. You cannot fight us forever, Eliza. You will give in. You will always give in.

“I won’t!” Eliza shouted, her voice desperate. “I’m not weak like you want me to be!”

The room seemed to tremble at her words. The darkness pulsed, but Eliza’s resolve didn’t falter. She gripped the veil even tighter, her body shaking, but her mind was steady.

“I choose to fight,” Eliza said, her voice raw but firm. “I choose to stand. I won’t let you break me.”

The shadows writhed, their form twisting violently. You are not strong enough, they sneered. You never were.

“I am strong enough,” Eliza said, taking a step forward. “I don’t need you. I don’t need the curse. I am me.”

The figure in the shadows hissed, its form crumbling as if unraveling. The whispers faded, replaced by silence, a silence so thick it felt like a breath could shatter it.

For a moment, Eliza stood still, waiting for the darkness to strike back, but nothing happened. She blinked, looking around. It was quiet. Too quiet.

“I… I did it?” Eliza whispered, but she wasn’t sure if she could believe it.

“You did,” Clara’s voice answered softly. “You made the right choice, Eliza. You chose to fight.”

“But what now?” Eliza asked, her voice filled with uncertainty. “Is it truly over?”

“It’s not over yet,” Clara warned. “The curse will always be there, but it won’t claim you unless you let it. As long as you keep choosing to fight, you have a chance.”

Eliza looked down at the veil, its glow now faint. “I’ll keep fighting,” she whispered. “I won’t give in.”

For the first time, Eliza felt a flicker of hope, though it was small, barely enough to hold back the darkness. But it was enough.
