Chapter 6: The Echo of Betrayal

The giant shadow towered above them, so brilliant that it seemed to snuff out all light. Kael's own breath was stuck in his throat as the dark shape convulsed and twisted, growing more substantial before them. Vanished, the guardian — something much, much older, and much, much worse. The air crackled with a power as ancient as time, and sent his skin tingling.

Reika didn't blink. She stepped forward once more, the humming energy of the dagger still clutched in her hand, but even she hesitated, a momentary spasm flashing across her otherwise unyielding face.

The monster's voice rang out again, and a shiver went down the back of Kael's neck. "You dare to stand in the path of the inevitable? You won't. The Core belongs to me. And the world will learn to bow to its power soon enough.".

Kael gazed at Reika, his mind reeling. All the power they had struggled against up to now — the shadows, the earth trembling, the air itself — all that seemed to blend with the presence of the beast. It was as if to combat a storm with sword and prayer.

We will not lose, Reika growled with set teeth, her eyes fixed on the monster. Her voice wasn't shaking. But Kael could sense it in the tension of her shoulders, in the white-knuckled clench on the knife handle. She was struggling, just as he was.

The creature laughed, the sound reverberating through the ruin like thunder. "Foolish girl. The Core will shape this world into its image. There is no hope for you. No one can stop it."

Kael felt the weight of its words settle over him, but something in him refused to yield. He had to fight. They had to fight.

"We'll find a way," he muttered, more to himself than to Reika.

And then, as though responding to him, the ground under their feet started to widen, and shadows seemed to reach even further. Kael backed away a pace, his heaving chest panting as the chasm widened before them, an apparently endless well of dark. The monster towered over them, its shape now twisted like a colossus, its burning orbs blazing with ferocious anger upon both of them.

Reika moved forward, knife held, but Kael noticed the fear in her eyes now burning like fire. She understood that they were outgunned. The creature was not to be battled. It was a natural creature, an old and very ancient creature which neither of them could possibly hope to defeat without some assistance.

"Kael, listen," she interrupted, her voice tight, strained. "We can't fight this sort of fight in this state. There is going to be a cost in getting this. The Core is woven into this destruction, into this earth itself. If we burn it, we might be killing everything."

Kael looked at her, his head filled with confusion. "What do you mean?"

Reika's eyes blazed with something — guilt? Regret? For an instant, Kael saw her vulnerability, something he had never witnessed with his own eyes. "The dagger," she spoke, the voice softer. "It is not a sword. It is a key. A key to something greater than us all. We can seal the Core away, if we employ it now, but."

Her words suspended there, laden with the heaviness of the choice in them.

But what?" Kael insisted.

She took a breath. "But at a cost. The Core is connected into this world, into this ruin. To annihilate it will disrupt the very balance of all that we have struggled to preserve. If we succeed.".

Kael's head reeled, his heart pounding in his chest. He was watching the fight being waged inside her, the weight of what she had done. There was no going back. Not now.

Any words Kael might offer were spoken before the earth trembled again and the monster laughed full-throated, cold and derisive.

"Believe that you can control the destiny of this world, mortals? The Core cannot be defeated!"

Reika wrapped her hand tightly around the dagger as she steeled herself. "We'll see about that," she said to herself quietly, not to the monster.

She sprang up, her motion a blur of swiftness and quickness. The light of the dagger flashed in low illumination, fantasies consumed as it plunged into ground once more. There was a build-up of electrical tension in the air, and Kael could feel the shocks to his core on the ground.

And then just as this began, everything stalled in mid-sweep. And then the universe imploded in flash-lighty smash.

Kael closed his eyes, but the light was torture. The air was loaded with uncontrolled power, a force so wild that it was warping everything around them out of form. After the light had finally dissipated, he stood looking at an empty space where the creature had been, its black form now a memory of its presence.

But victory was brief. The devastation still resonated with the power of the Core, the ground still trembling under their feet. The power about them swirled, chaotic and unbridled, and Kael recognized — this was just the start.

Reika stood frozen, looking down at where the beast was standing. Her dagger, still radiating its light, now felt odd. A power seemed to flow through the blade, a pulse that seemed to match the pounding of his own heart.

Kael approached her, his head cloudy. "What happened?"

Reika did not respond at once. She had a lost look on her face, as if her mind remained fixed in some terrible memory. "We did what we could do," she spoke at last, her voice weighted with wistfulness. "But to what end? I do not know. The Core remains out there, Kael. We may have stalled it for a time, but the balance is too fine. This far from over by any means.".

Kael took a punch of opinions, his head spinning. The devastation continued, the energy of the Core still radiating from the earth. No one had any idea what came next. But one thing was for sure — the world was not safe yet.

And in what was left of the force so massive, Kael thought the true villain was not even there yet.
