The First Spark

Emma stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her dress for the tenth time. The Turner family had organized a grand dinner to “celebrate” the upcoming wedding, and she was expected to make an impression. Her heart raced as she thought about facing Alex again. The way he had looked at her earlier—cold, distant, almost mocking—made her stomach churn.

*“Why am I even trying?”* she thought, staring at her reflection. *“He doesn’t care. This is just a game to him.”*

But deep down, Emma knew she had to put on a brave face. Her family was counting on her, and she couldn’t let them down.

**The Dinner Party...**

The dining hall was filled with the sound of laughter and clinking glasses. The room was decorated with elegant flowers and sparkling lights, but Emma felt completely out of place. Everyone around her seemed to belong to a different world—a world of wealth, power, and privilege.

Alex stood at the other end of the room, talking to a group of businessmen. He looked confident and in control, as always. Emma couldn’t help but notice how everyone seemed to hang on his every word.

Victoria, Alex’s mother, walked over to Emma with a polite smile. “Emma, dear, you look lovely. I hope you’re settling in well.”

Emma forced a smile. “Thank you, Mrs. Turner. Everyone has been very kind.”

Victoria nodded, but her eyes were sharp and calculating. “Good. Remember, this marriage is important for both our families. I expect you to do your part.”

Emma’s heart sank. She felt like a pawn in a game she didn’t want to play.

**A Tense Conversation...**

As the dinner began, Emma found herself seated next to Alex. The tension between them was palpable. They ate in silence, neither one willing to break the ice.

Finally, Alex spoke, his voice low and cold. “I hope you understand this marriage is just a formality. Don’t expect anything more from me.”

Emma’s hands tightened around her fork, but she kept her voice calm. “Don’t worry, Alex. I’m not here to play the role of a perfect wife. This is just as uncomfortable for me as it is for you.”

Alex raised an eyebrow, surprised by her boldness. “Good. As long as we’re on the same page.”

**A Unexpected Connection...**

After dinner, Emma stepped outside to get some fresh air. The cool night breeze felt soothing against her skin. She leaned against the balcony railing, staring at the stars.

“Couldn’t handle the crowd either?” a voice said behind her.

Emma turned to see Alex standing there, his hands in his pockets. For the first time, he didn’t look cold or distant. He looked... human.

“I just needed a break,” Emma replied, turning back to the view.

Alex walked over and stood beside her. “I get it. These events can be exhausting.”

There was a moment of silence as they both stared at the night sky. Then Alex spoke again, his voice softer this time. “Look, I know this situation isn’t ideal for either of us. But maybe we can try to make the best of it.”

Emma looked at him, surprised. “What do you mean?”

Alex shrugged. “I don’t know. Maybe we can at least try to be civil with each other. For the sake of our families.”

Emma hesitated, then nodded. “Okay. We can try.”

**A Twist in the Night...**

As they stood there, a sudden noise caught their attention. They turned to see a figure slipping into the shadows.

“Who was that?” Emma asked, her heart racing.

Alex’s expression darkened. “I don’t know. But I’ll find out.”

**To Be Continued...**

Who was watching them? What secrets are hiding in the shadows? And will Emma and Alex’s fragile truce last?
