Episode 3: "The Unseen Growth"
The days had begun to blur into one long stretch of quiet routines. The seasons had shifted, and the days were growing longer, the sun stretching lazily across the sky as it kissed the earth goodnight. But within the Mitchell household, time felt different. It moved with a quiet urgency, like the ebb and flow of a steady river, always carrying something forward, always shifting.
Aaron, now a few months old, had started to show subtle signs of growth. Though he still could not do much besides cry, sleep, and drink milk, there was something about the way he gazed up at the world around him that made Rachel and David pause. The world, to Aaron, was still so vast, and yet his little eyes seemed to be taking it all in, absorbing it with quiet curiosity.
It was a quiet morning when Rachel found herself standing in front of Aaron’s crib, watching him with the kind of reverence only a parent could understand. Aaron was awake but not crying for once. His eyes were wide, filled with wonder, and he was reaching his tiny hands toward the soft animals dangling from his mobile.
Rachel smiled softly, her hand resting on her chest. It was moments like this, when the world around her felt suspended in time, that she realized how fast her son was growing, even though it seemed imperceptible at times.
She heard the soft padding of footsteps behind her and turned to find Olivia standing in the doorway, her small frame barely visible through the light streaming in from the hallway.
"Mom?" Olivia asked quietly, her eyes peering around Rachel’s shoulder to get a look at Aaron. "Is he okay?"
Rachel turned and smiled warmly at her daughter. "He’s fine, sweetie. Just a little curious this morning."
Olivia nodded, her face thoughtful. "He looks like he’s thinking. Is that what babies do? Think?"
Rachel chuckled, her gaze returning to Aaron. "I think so. They just don’t have the words for it yet."
Olivia stood there for a moment, watching Aaron as he reached his hands toward the soft, spinning shapes in the air. A tiny giggle bubbled up from her chest, and she walked toward the crib.
"I think I’ll play with him today," Olivia declared, her voice full of enthusiasm. "I can help him get smarter."
Rachel laughed softly. "That’s the spirit, honey."
But just as Olivia reached out toward Aaron, the baby’s expression shifted. He began to scrunch his face, his tiny hands clenching into fists. A soft whimper escaped his lips.
Rachel’s heart dropped a little, instinctively stepping forward. "What’s wrong, sweetheart?" she murmured, lifting Aaron gently into her arms.
Aaron let out a loud cry, and Rachel immediately began to rock him, soothing him in the way she had learned over the past few months. She turned to Olivia, her voice calm. "Can you grab his bottle from the counter for me, sweetie?"
Olivia nodded quickly and ran off to fetch it. Rachel felt Aaron's body tense against hers, his cries becoming more frantic with each passing second. She closed her eyes for a moment, breathing deeply, trying to stay composed. It was moments like this—when nothing seemed to work, when nothing could stop the tears—that tested her patience. But she knew it was temporary. It always was.
Meanwhile, Jackson was sitting at the kitchen table, his eyes glued to his phone screen as he scrolled through social media. He had his headphones in, completely tuned out of the world around him. But even from the kitchen, he could hear Aaron’s cries in the background. He sighed, pressing his palms against his temples. This had become routine—Aaron crying, Olivia trying to help, and Mom coming to the rescue.
He wasn’t annoyed exactly—just a little tired of the constant interruptions. But he knew better than to voice his frustration too openly. His parents had already been through a lot with Aaron, and they didn’t need him adding to it.
Still, there was a part of him that wished Aaron could just be a little quieter. But he knew that would come with time, and in the meantime, there was nothing he could do about it. His siblings, on the other hand, seemed to handle it differently. Olivia was always so eager to help, and even though Jackson wasn’t sure what to do with a baby, he respected that.
Back in the nursery, Rachel had finally managed to calm Aaron down. She stood with him in her arms, gently swaying side to side, whispering words of comfort as his cries dwindled to soft sniffles. Olivia, standing nearby, watched her little brother with a mixture of awe and curiosity.
“Do you think he knows I was trying to help him?” Olivia asked, her voice quiet.
Rachel smiled warmly, adjusting Aaron in her arms. “I think he knows. Babies can sense when someone cares about them.”
Olivia grinned, her face lighting up with pride. “I’ll keep helping him then. Maybe he’ll talk to me soon.”
Rachel’s heart swelled with love for her daughter. “He will, Olivia. You’re going to be a great big sister.”
The baby in her arms cooed softly, his tiny fingers grasping her shirt as he finally settled into the comfort of her embrace. Rachel sighed contentedly, resting her cheek against Aaron’s soft head. It wasn’t always easy, but these moments, when everything felt peaceful, made it all worth it.
That evening, as the sun set and the family gathered around the dinner table, Rachel looked at her children with a sense of gratitude. She watched as Jackson dug into his food, his usual nonchalant expression on his face, and Olivia, who was quietly asking Aaron if he liked his dinner as she carefully fed him. Aaron, still a baby, could only stare back at his sister with wide, innocent eyes. But to Rachel, it was a beautiful sight.
It was these moments, the little things—watching her children interact, seeing Olivia’s desire to help, feeling the weight of Aaron in her arms—that showed her how much they were all growing, both as individuals and as a family.
And though the growth was often unseen, happening bit by bit, day by day, she knew it was happening. They were all unfolding, slowly but surely, just as they were meant to.
