Echoes of Ragnarok – Episode 6: A Captain’s Sacrifice
The air was thick with the scent of salt and blood. Ironfang Darius wasn’t done yet. After learning that Monkey D. Kai had eaten the Gomu Gomu no Mi, he was furious. That fruit was supposed to be his ticket to domination, and now, some reckless kid had taken it.
Kai, still struggling to control his newfound abilities, was on the run alongside Captain Raizo and his crew. They had barely escaped the village, now hunted through the dense jungle as Ironfang’s forces closed in. The night was alive with the sound of snapping branches and battle cries.
“We need to get to the shore,” Raizo commanded, leading his crew through the darkness. “If we can reach the ship, we can—”
Before he could finish, a massive figure crashed down from the trees, splitting the ground beneath him. Ironfang himself had arrived. His iron-plated boots crushed the dirt as he towered over them, his battle axe glinting under the moonlight.
“You really thought you could escape me?” Ironfang growled, his golden eyes burning with rage. “That Devil Fruit was mine. And now, I’ll carve it out of you, boy.”
Kai clenched his fists, still unsure of how to properly use his rubber-like abilities. His body felt strange, his movements uncoordinated. He had trained his whole life, but this? This was completely different.
Ironfang lunged. Faster than anyone expected.
Kai barely had time to react as the axe came swinging for his head. Instinct kicked in—his body stretched unnaturally, dodging at the last second. But he wasn’t fast enough. The force sent him crashing through the trees, his body slamming into a rock.
“Kai!” Raizo shouted, unsheathing his katana. His crew immediately charged at Ironfang’s men, engaging them in a brutal fight.
But Ironfang wasn’t after them. He wanted Kai. He marched forward, lifting his axe for the final blow. Kai was dazed, struggling to stand.
Then, in a flash of steel—
Raizo was there.
The captain threw himself in front of Kai, swinging his sword against Ironfang’s axe. A deafening clash. Sparks flew as metal met metal. But Ironfang was too strong. With a single powerful swing—
Raizo’s sword shattered.
And then—
His hand was gone.
Kai’s eyes widened in horror as Raizo staggered back, blood spraying across the dirt. His right hand severed at the wrist, fingers twitching on the ground.
But Raizo didn’t scream. Didn’t falter. He just gritted his teeth, gripping his bleeding arm. “Kai… run.”
Kai’s hands trembled. Run? No. No, he couldn’t. This was his fault. If he hadn’t eaten the fruit—
“RUN!” Raizo roared, kicking Kai backward. “You’re not ready for this fight! Don’t let my sacrifice be for nothing!”
Ironfang grinned, stepping forward. “Pathetic. You gave your hand for nothing.”
Raizo just smirked through the pain. “If I have to lose a hand to keep that kid alive… I’ll gladly lose the other.”
Kai clenched his fists. His body still ached, his mind still raced—but something in him snapped. He wasn’t going to let Raizo die.
For the first time since eating the fruit, Kai embraced his new power.
And Ironfang was about to regret everything.
